2024: The reason for the Runet malfunction was the imperfection of the DNSSEC software

On January 30, 2024, many Internet users encountered DNS resolution errors in domains located in the.RU zone, caused by a failure in updating the Domain Name System (DNSSEC) security extension key. This was announced on January 31, 2024 by the Coordination Center for the National Domain of the Internet (CC).

The resulting key collision led to the temporary inaccessibility of the.RU zone for some Internet users.

After the failure was detected, the updated keys were revoked, and the functionality of the.RU zone was fully restored, which took about two hours, including the distribution of data over the DNS system. This was done thanks to the well-coordinated work of specialists to eliminate the technical failure, which eventually made it possible to quickly restore the functionality of the.RU zone in full with DNSSEC validation.

As of January 31, 2024, the investigation of the incident continues, but it is already clear that the main cause of the failure was the imperfection of the software used to create encryption keys. Like any other technology solution, DNSSEC requires improvement over time to correct detectable operational errors. It is worth noting that DNSSEC as a means of ensuring the security of Internet users worked as intended: the work of DNS servers was blocked in a timely manner, which did not confirm the authenticity of their response to requests for domain name resolution.

DNSSEC Internet is a young technology by standards, and over many years of its application in world practice there have been more than 200 similar cases, and over the past three years more than 20 times, including the temporary disconnection of the.AU domain in September 2023. In March 2022, due to a DNSSEC error, the Fiji national domain.FJ dropped out of the global network for more than 12 hours. Due to the same error in the DNSSEC settings at the beginning of 2022, about 8 thousand names in the national.SE domain were disconnected from the network Sweden for several hours, and the.SE registry was the first to implement DNSSEC - back in 2005. In total, 1,709,718 new domains were registered in.RU in 2023, while by the end of the year the registration rate almost doubled - from January to September, 123 thousand domains per month were registered on average, and from October to December - 201 thousand.

The distribution of domain names between individuals and legal entities in the domains of.RU and.RF has hardly changed for several recent years: in.RU 74% of names are registered by individuals (in.RF - 78%) and 26% - by legal entities (in.RF - 22%). There are an average of 2.7 domain names per administrator in both domains.

Geographical indicators are also quite stable: 83% of domain names in.RU and 92% in.RF. registered by Russian citizens.

As the director of the Coordination Center Andrei Vorobyov noted, the main drivers of the growth of Russian domain zones were the transfer of sites to Russian jurisdiction under pressure from sanctions, as well as the emergence of a large number of new projects aimed at the Russian audience.

"The trend towards an increase in the popularity of national domain zones will continue in 2024, and the commercialization of the Russian segment will also grow. A record volume of domain transfer is observed in the.ru zone

In December 2023, Russian registrars Ru-Center and Reg.ru processed twice as many applications for the transfer of domains previously placed with other registrars in comparison with the same period in 2022. Such data were published on January 10, 2024.

By the end of December 2022, in the.RU zone there were 4,933,113 domains with which 1,958,673 administrators work, and in the Cyrillic zone. RF - 676,254 domains with which 314,164 administrators work.

In total, 1,356,648 new domains were registered in the.RU zone in 2022, and 164,965 new names in the RF.

In the.RU domain, 4,991,694 domain names are registered, 95.7% of which are delegated. This is a very high figure - it means that the vast majority of domain names in.RU are used and work.
