BIOS (Basic Input/Output System)

.

BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is a set of the microprograms implementing API for work from the computer and the devices connected to it. BIOS treats the system software.

2017: Plans of Intel for the support termination

In November, 2017 Intel called failure terms from BIOS. Instead of this firmware the American corporation will advance the set of the EFI specifications.

On a regional event for PC makers and motherboards representatives of Intel declared failure  from backward compatibility with the legacy BIOS mode in a microcode of notebooks, motherboards and servers, since 2020.

By this time the version of UEFI will improve to the third class which does not provide compatibility with the outdated mode of loading of CMS, and all computer and server platforms will have to support her.

BIOS settings

By 2017 computers are delivered with  UEFI, but many of them are also equipped also with BIOS for  use of an obsolete equipment which can be incompatible with  UEFI. For example, old video cards can  not work in  systems  using UEFI.

Failure of support of BIOS by Intel company means that it will be impossible to load a number of classical utilities for work with hard drives and to update BIOS by traditional methods.

According to the statement of Intel, complete transition to UEFI Class 3 will increase the level of security of computer systems thanks to constantly active Secure Boot function. This mode is not obligatory for the PC, i.e. users all the same will be able to start unsigned by Linux distribution kits through UEFI. However it will be impossible to bypass compatibility issues, using CSM, on devices with Intel processors, notes the Liliputing edition.

After failure from BIOS support of 16-bit operating systems and also 32-bit Windows 7 will stop. Intel will exclude components without support of UEFI, guaranteeing that drivers, peripheral devices and utilities will be able to work without CSM.

Eventually use  of the PC   has to become safer, the code amount will be reduced, and  new technologies will get more broad support, summarize in Intel.[1]
