Till 2020: forecast
According to IDC IDC's New Worldwide Business Analytics Services Forecast Shows Estimated Spending Will Reach for April, 2013, world expenses on BI services will increase on average by 14.3% so in 2016 they will make $70.8 billion. In July, 2013 IDC announced that by its updated calculations, the annual average rate of the world market of a business intelligence till 2017 will be 9.7%. Thus, rather previous years there will be explicit deceleration of the market. Especially it will be noticeable in Europe.of Gartner, till 2016 the market of BI systems and analytical platforms will remain to some of the most quickly growing segments of the world software market. The annual average growth rate of this market will be 7% during the period from 2011 to 2016. By 2016 market size can reach $17.1 billion.
At the same time the market of BI, according to Gartner of April, 2012 if to consider it in total with data warehouses and analytics in CRM, grows even quicker – for 9% a year. If for the end of 2010 it made of $57 billion, then by 2014 it will reach $81 billion, and by 2020 - $136 billion.
By estimates of the analyst of Gartner Rita Sallam about 30% of business users already interact with a business intelligence, by 2014 this indicator will grow to 50%, and by 2020 – to 75%.
Analysts of IDC believe that a number of factors will promote the further growth of the market of outsourcing BI services. First, the shortage of qualified specialists who are required for implementation of BI initiatives, including mathematicians, directly business analysts, specialists in data models, statisticians and research associates of a different profile is everywhere noted.
On the other hand, development of new technologies and close integration of BI with social networks and mobile platforms make business analysis tools available to broad categories of end users. However, it is difficult to end users to organize implementation teams, and costs for necessary infrastructure of BI systems are often too big for this category of clients.
"Failure" in the personnel market and lack of necessary fundamental knowledge more and more companies will push to involvement of service providers for ensuring needs for the business analysis in the near future, believe in IDC.
Data of Gartner
In February, 2018 Gartner released the next magic quadrant, having included in it 20 BI systems.
The third year in a row 3 vendors - Qlik, Tableau and Microsoft became leaders. Carried only one company to number of applicants of analytics - Microstrategy. Visionaries are called by IBM, Tibco Software, SAP, SAS, ThoughtSpot, Salesforce and Sisense. 9 vendors - Logi Analytics, Pyramid Analytics, Yellowfin, BOARD International, Oracle, Information Builders, Looker, Domo, Birst became niche players (Niche players).
According to the researches IDC the world market of a business intelligence and Big Data in 2016 made $130 billion, to the 2020th the size of the market of BI it is predicted will approach $203 billion.
Market size in $16.9 billion — data of Gartner
In 2016 the volume of global market of platforms of a business intelligence (Business Intelligence, BI) and analytical applications reached $16.9 billion, having increased by 5.2% in comparison with the 2015th, preliminary data of Gartner analytical company demonstrate.
According to experts, the market is at the last stages of long-term transition of system drawing up reportings (IT approach) towards means of the automatic analysis (business approach). As a result (BI&A) began to impose on modern platforms of a business intelligence and data analysis new requirements to availability, flexibility and depth of analytical understanding.
|Transition to modern BI&A-платформе reached critical point — the managing vice president of Gartner Ian Bertram says. — The companies should pass to simpler in use, to fast and flexible platforms of a business intelligence to create business opportunities due to deep understanding of different data sources.|
According to analysts, strategic importance of analytics for many organizations and heads grows. The companies understand that each business can be considered from a business intelligence position, each business process — from a position of analytical process, and each person — as the user of analytics, said in the research Gartner.
Jan Bertram notes that modern marketing directors cannot be just experts in the field of branding and advertizing any more: they also should be specialists in the analysis of consumer behavior. The same concerns heads of personnel departments, chief financial officers and responsible for supply channels in many markets, he considers.
He also added that many companies aim to democratize possibilities of analytics through self-service.
Data of Gartner
According to Gartner company, the volume of the world market of business analytics (BI) and the analytical software which includes the BI platforms, performance management systems of the organizations (CPM), analytical applications and advanced analytics reached $14.4 billion in 2013. It is 8% more, than an indicator of $13.3 billion in 2012.
Among top five the SAP company increased the income by 5% and reached $3.1 billion at a market share — 21.3%. Indicators of Oracle practically did not change, and turnover of Microsoft in this industry made $1.379 billion that allowed it to keep on the 5th position. At the same time the company showed the highest growth among leaders — 15.9%
2012: the world market of BI platforms slowed down growth
In 2012, according to these IDC of July, 2012, the world market of BI software grew by 8.7% and reached $34.9 billion. In 2011, for comparison, growth of this market was 15%, i.e. it slowed down almost twice.
Such recession is caused as the macroeconomic problems relevant for the majority of the countries, and considerable weakening of the market of BI systems in Europe separately. At the same time, the market of a business intelligence still exceeds on growth rates all software market in general which, according to IDC, increased in 2012 by 3%.
Most successfully there are sales of BI systems in such regions of the world as Asia-Pacific (except for Japan) and Latin America, the local markets of a business intelligence of these regions grew in 2012 by 13.4% everyone. In North America an economic recovery also allowed to reach significant growth on sales of BI: in 2012 it made 12.1%. Till 2017 the annual average growth rate of the market of BI systems will be maximum in Latin America – 12.4% and also in North America (10.9%) and the Pacific Rim without Japan – 10.5%.
Among separate segments of the market of a business intelligence in 2012 the greatest gain showed a segment of platforms of data storage (10.8% in annual terms). Segment directly of BI systems and analytical tools and also the segment of performance management and analytical applications increased by 7.7% everyone. 64% of the market in terms of money in 2012 at the same time were the share of six vendors: among them there are such companies as Oracle, SAP, IBM, Microsoft, SAS, Teradata.
Data of Gartner
According to Gartner of June, 2013, the world market of BI platforms, CPM and analytical applications which the research company considers unseparably in 2012 reached $13.1 billion that for 6.8% it is more than 2011. In 2011, we will remind, growth of this market was 17%, but such take-off could not continue infinitely, and in general results of 2012 correspond to moderate forecasts which investigated reported earlier.
Gartner selects five main the loudspeaker which had an impact on the world market of BI in 2012: two of them negative (these are difficult macroeconomic conditions and doubts in success of a business intelligence and Big Data), the third rather neutral (expenses on analytics go out of the IT field). There are also two positive factors: data discovery becomes a mainstream, offers of SaaS also violently develop.
In the five of the largest vendors of BI platforms on total revenue there were no new names in 2012, and here positions of the companies underwent changes: IBM and SAS traded places so IBM took the third place, and SAS, on the contrary, the fourth. Business of IBM in the field of BI and CPM in 2012 grew by 9.9% to $1.6 billion. At the same time in total five largest suppliers of analytical platforms occupied 70% of the world market in 2012.
SAP with revenue of $2.9 billion and 22.1% of market shares though its growth by 2011 was only 0.6% remained the market leader. On the second place the Oracle company, whose revenue grew in comparison with 2011 by 2% to $1.9 billion Microsoft, appeared on the fifth line, showed the maximum gain of revenue in 2012: it increased by 12.2% to $1.2 billion.
Top-5 vendors in the world market of BI 2011-2012, $ one million
|Vendor||Revenue of 2012||Market share of 2012||Revenue of 2011||Growth of 2011-2012|
According to Gartner Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms 2013, in 2012 data discovery technologies and analytical architecture became the main trend in the world market of BI. Also significant growth was noted in an analytics segment in real time, content of analytics and the predicative analysis.
Gartner notes that though Chief information officers had systems of a business intelligence in a priority for an extent of a row of years, all the same on BI systems serious demand remains. For example, the systems of so-called "descriptive" analytics in the industry of sale and the financial industry were widely adopted, however, there is a big backlash for development of diagnostic systems, forecasting. The companies of medium business in the majority for the beginning of 2013 just start implementation of BI systems.
Magic square of vendors of BI for 2012
As for market leaders, for the beginning of 2013 in a magic square there were significant shifts in comparison with a situation the previous year. A number of vendors so strengthened the market positions that passed from group of chellendzher into a square of leaders. If in 2012 Information Builders, Oracle, MicroStrategy, Microsoft, IBM, Qlik (QlikTech), SAP and SAS were called leaders, then in 2013 Tableau Software and Tibco Software were added to them.
It is quite difficult to get in leaders of a magic square of Gartner: systems are estimated on a number of factors, for example, to completeness of functionality of the last stable release, quality of support, number of implementations and others. It is obvious that Tableau and Tibco for 2011-2012 was done huge work and now these platforms became capable to compete with offers of mega-vendors.
LogiXML (promoted from group of niche vendors) and Birst which was included in a square for the first time got to the square of chellendzher released by Tableau and Tibco. The same companies, as in 2012, with the clause are carried to niche vendors that one more new vendor – Bitam is added to them. It is remarkable that the Russian company Prognoz is included the second year in a row in a magic square of BI platforms, and its positions in a square – closely to border of a segment of chellendzher – leave promising perspective for domestic vendor.
If to compare a magic square of 2013 to squares of 2010-2012, then it is possible to note that the number of large vendors in the world market of BI systems and analytical platforms actually doubled for the last three years. Now megavendors are resisted by a great number of specialized developers who aggressively uphold the place "under the sun" and due to more active implementation of innovations move own platforms very intensively forward. At the same time there is a place for appearance of new leaders. So in 2013 and further the competition literally "will heat" the world market of a business intelligence.
The volume of the world market of the business intelligence systems (BI) will reach $13.8 billion in 2013 that for 7% it is more than 2012, according to.
The market of BI and analytical solutions became the fourth in value subsegment of the global software market as the companies continue to implement projects on implementation of the systems of business data analysis and information and centric projects and also invest in automation of decision making and analytical tools. In the following business cycle, believe in Gartner, the analytics of Big Data (Big data) will become the main driver. Also in the market BI development cloud, mobile and social tools will continue to play a significant role.
In the short term the market can appear under an insignificant negative impact of macroeconomic processes and also decelerations of sales cycles within multimillion BI contracts. So, in comparison with growth of the market by 16% in 2011, the rate of increase in this market in the following several years after 2013 will be more modest, expressed unambiguous indicator.
Gartner notes that though the market of BI and analytics is rather mature, and the systems of this type remained the most demanded for the last two-three years, all the same demand of the companies for them is not up to the end met. There is still a set of data domains, such as personnel management, marketing, the social sphere where adaptation of BI and analytical tools is at an early stage so far. Also in Gartner predict further development and promoting of the "data as service" model (data-as-a-service).
The set of basic analytical projects is sold in the market, and on a front line of such implementations there was in the basic large business and such industries as finance and sales, however, there comes time for implementation of the predicative analysis and other more "advanced" BI of opportunities. Besides, medium business and the companies in some vertical markets only begin to consider the possibility of use of the systems of business data analysis and analytical tools so BI will remain one of the most quickly growing software markets.
Market of implementation services of BI
According to Forrester Research The Forrester wave, for the last few years also considerably evolved the market of services around implementation of the systems of a business intelligence. As of the end of 2012 experts of this company selected 12 leaders in the field of BI consulting, it included such firms as Accenture, Capgemini, Cognizant, CSC, Deloitte, HP, Infosys, KPMG, IBM, PwC, TCS and Wipro.

Forrester Research, 2012
Whereas IBM, Accenture, CSC, Deloitte, Wipro, Infosys, HP, Capgemini, TCS, Cognizant, KPMG and PwC are recognized by the leading service providers BI in technical skills and ability to work with specific platforms.

|Vendor||Number of BI projects||Revenue from the BI direction||Number of BI consultants|
|1||Accenture||More than 1400||$2 billion||9500|
|2||Capgemini||More than 1400||$758 million||7300|
|6||HP||600 (clients)||$500 million||3500|
|9||KPMG||1000 (clients)||$679 million||2200|
|11||TCS||300 (clients)||$1.02 billion||15000|

Drivers of increase in demand for services of service providers in the market of BI systems are its following features. First, platforms of a business intelligence and an analysis system develop so quickly that quite often by the time of completion of implementation manage to become outdated morally so the contact with professional advisors allows to have the finger on the pulse. Besides, it is often difficult for clients to define requirements to a BI system independently.
Also the majority of the solutions BI are rather difficult, consist of a set of components and require setup. Success of system operation of the business analysis often also directly depends on that, how densely it are integrated with key platforms and applications of the company so here not to do without the help of integrators.
Data of Gartner
The world market of BI platforms, analytical applications and the Performance Management (PM) systems reached $12.2 billion in 2011 that is 16.4% more than indicators of 2010 ($10.5) of one billion, according to Gartner. Among other subsegments of the world software market BI took the second place on growth rates.
Such serious growth was supported with two key factors. The first consists that the companies continue to invest in BI even despite difficulties with budgets on IT projects. The research Gartner among Chief information officers of 2012 showed that this year BI will remain technology priority No. 1 for most of heads of departments of information technologies. The second factor: shift of consumer activity concerning BI systems from IT services towards business users that provides to vendors an essential gain of revenue.
Turnover of the world market of the systems of a business intelligence on segments, $ one million

|1||Analytical applications and PM||1938,6||15,8||1652,6||15,7||17,3|
All three subsegments of the market which are selected by Gartner showed a gain in 2011.
The world market of a business intelligence, according to Gartner, remains rather consolidated: the five of the largest players continues to accumulate its most part by combinations of absorption, integration, cross-sellings and other activity of this sort. However Gartner selects about 100 innovation vendors which fight for the place in the sun so market opportunities for them are finally not exhausted.

In general in the market of BI platforms, analytical applications and the Performance Management systems the SAP company to whose share 24% of the market fell, after it - Oracle, SAS Institute Inc remained vendor No. 1 based on 2011 . (SAS Institute) (SAS Institute), IBM and Microsoft.
Magic square of vendors of BI for 2011
It is traditional an idea of positions of vendors in the market of BI gives also the research Gartner Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence Platforms updated in February, 2012. At the same time BI platforms in terminology of Gartner represent the largest segment of the world market of a business intelligence, but not the market entirely.
According to the last magic square, leaders of a segment of BI platforms in 2011 of steel of Oracle, MicroStrategy, Microsoft, QlikTech, Information Builders, IBM, SAS and SAP. Tableau Software and Tibco Software (Spotfire system) are called Chellendzherami, i.e. applicants for a leader rank.
In 2011 Gartner carried LogiXML, Actuate Software, Panorama Software, Salient Management Company, Board International, Arcplan, Targit, Alteryx, Pentaho, Jaspersoft to niche players. It is remarkable that in 2011 Gartner for the first time included in a magic square the Russian Prognoz Platform platform, having also placed it in a row niche offers that, certainly, is world recognition for the domestic software product.
In a square of 2012 is not present any visionary and very few chellendzher. Where innovations are concentrated? The matter is that they proceed generally from small startups which then quickly "absorb" the leading BI platforms. For the last 5 years mega-vendors purchased all best-of-breed products in this market: Oracle purchased Siebel and Hyperion, SAP – Business Objects, IBM – Cognos, etc. This trend will remain, and large vendors will continue absorption of the innovation products in the portfolios.
Based on 2011, according to IDC Worldwide Business Analytics Software Market Continues Stellar Recovery Driven By Big Data Hype and Accelerated , the world market of a business intelligence managed to come out far beyond the pre-crisis level: rate of a gain of volume of global market of BI was 14.1%. According to forecasts of IDC, during from 2011 to 2016 the annual average gain of the world market of BI will make 9.8%, as a result it will reach of $50.7 billion.
The main drivers of this growth will become attention to such phenomenon as Big Data and also that circumstance that implementation of the systems of a business intelligence is on the agenda at the increasing number of top managers.
Besides, the new analytical tools based on not - relational DBMS, force suppliers to work actively in the R&D direction and also merges and absorption that is the good catalyst for the market.
Among three key segments of the market of a business intelligence which selects with IDC which is the most quickly growing at a segment is the systems of platforms of data storage – in 2011 it grew in volume by 15.2%. On the second place on growth rates directly a segment of analytical applications (13.3%), on the third – BI systems and analytical tools (13.2%).
Among other global trends in the market of a business intelligence experts of IDC select growth of number of transactions in the field of SaaS and outsourcing of applications. The more the companies with brief experience of use analysts address tools of this sort, the more vendors should place emphasis on a service component.
The world market of the systems of a business intelligence (BI) in 2012 can grow by 8.2% in relation to the volume of 2011 to $33.9 billion, according to data of the research IDC Worldwide Semiannual Business Analytics Tracker. This new research IDC which will come out with frequency half of year and to cover 12 main segments of the world market of the business analysis.
In the report it is said that demand for solutions for business data analysis will steadily increase as the awareness of the company on advantages of analytical tools and their opportunities for decision making grows. In semi-annual perspective from 12 main subsegments of the market five will reach of more than $1 billion: a segment of the reporting and analytics for end users, management of data warehouses, applications for achievement of financial performance and strategic management, analytics in CRM systems and also directly a segment of data warehouses.
So, in the first half of the year 2011 73% of the world market of analytics were the share of them in total, at the same time the annual growth of total volumes of these segments was 13.8% - above an average on the market.
The large regional remain the market of BI the market of the USA (41% of world in 2011), growth by 8.6% in a year 2012 is expected here. The Pacific Rim (except for Japan), Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and CEMA and also Latin America will show higher growth rate in 2012, according to the company. In the last three regions in the markets about 15 countries growth will be two-digit.
Among more than 300 vendors which entered the research IDC Worldwide Semiannual Business Analytics Tracker in all 12 subsegments in the first half of 2011 the leading positions were taken by Oracle from 20% of shares of the world market, growth of vendor on this the market in annual terms also considerable – 17.9%. The closest competitors of Oracle are SAP, IBM, SAS and Microsoft which in this period also showed two-digit growth. In the first half of 2011 of only 14 vendors broke a barrier in $100 million revenue. Among them there are also such companies as Informatica, MicroStrategy, Infor and Qlik (QlikTech).
LogiXML: Small business is dissatisfied with BI
Nearly a half of poorly prepared users showed discontent with implementation of a business intelligence (BI) in their company, according to the last research conducted by LogiXML company. "It indicates that we see the increasing gap between expectations of IT and business users concerning BI", - Ken Chow, the marketing director of LogiXML said.
Slightly better the general satisfaction when the technicians are connected looks, but it is not considerable: about 38% of all survey participants said that they were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with the BI tools. "Vast majority" of 575 survey participants worked in the small and medium enterprises, Chou reported, characterizing a segment of small and medium business as "tidbit" for vendors.
Did not become a big surprise for Chou the fact that more than 20% of firms (as they said) do not use any BI technology. In addition: the cost (27%) and absence of IT personnel (26%) became two strong barriers on the way to implementation of BI in these companies. Chou considers that the shortage of IT resources can represent an exclusive problem with the platforms requiring considerable efforts for their further development. "I think that it will remain the main obstacle for small and medium business", - Chou told. - It is one of the reasons that some companies of desktop analytics, such as we and some niche vendors could gain strength".
Usability, in addition to cost reasons, is a pacing factor for a product of any vendor which hopes to receive the base in work with the small companies. Not less important it and for increase in satisfaction of the customer at deployment in groups of novice users.
The analyst considers that sellers should work actively and many on this front, having reduced a gap between business users and information technologies. "We should remove a part of a burden of IT [from business users], we should facilitate them life, - Chou told. – One of bitter songs that we heard from IT much: business users do not know what is wanted. And what we hear from business users: in IT do not listen to us. The truth is somewhere between them".
Understanding of a gap between IT and business users, obviously, in other section of poll: not all (unlike other technologies for jobs), but 32% of respondents said that the unwillingness to attract IT department was the general in their organization of purchase and/or use of BI tools.
"As soon as business users come to what they do not receive necessary, they go and buy, - Zhou told, having noted that this trend was growth factor for LogiXML. – It is a lot of IT spetsialistovv does not know about the events until someone comes and will tell: "Could you, for me, fasten this to that database?" Another 26% of the polled firms stated that they do not know that it happens in their organization. The business users buying own BI tools helped to draw one more conclusion: more than a half (52%) of the companies, use from two up to four different platforms.
Microsoft has the largest penetration in the market among platforms in this poll, then there are Business Objects, LogiXML, Cognos and SAP. MicroStrategy about which Chou told - it "spoke about total war for much small and medium business" - on the sixth place. Solution providers with the open code were hooked for small and medium business, but their market share is still relatively small. JasperSoft occupied top among suppliers of open platforms, it is followed by Pentaho though everyone occupies less than three 3% in the overview.
"to do nothing a postulate and to use Excel" represents the terrible competitor for LogiXML and any other supplier of BI focused on the small companies, Chou considers. "I think, it is connected with forecasting and automation of too much in a configuration for products of small and medium business, - Chou told and added that undertaking from the reasonable purpose, but not waiting of the BI neophyte ready to become the data modeling expert for one night is crucial. - If you cannot force to see and understand during very short time frame value of at once what it is necessary to work with, will refuse you very quickly".
Data of Gartner
In Gartner terminology the world market of BI consists of three large subsegments: these are directly BI platforms, CPM solutions and a segment of analytical applications and performance management. The largest segment at the same time is the segment of BI platforms: in 2010 63.7% of turnover of the world market of the business analysis were the share of it. 20.6% and 15.7% of volume of the world market respectively were the share of segments of CPM and analytical applications. Leaders of the world market of industrial BI platforms
Forrester Research, 2010
According to data of the research The Forrester Wave: Enterprise Business Intelligence Platforms (October, 2010), in the market of industrial BI platforms systems were in the lead IBM Cognos Oracle SAP BusinessObjects Information Builders MicroStrategy, SAS and Microsoft.
Actuate Software BIRT, Tibco Spotfire, Qlik (QlikTech) and Panorama Software were carried to a segment of the solutions having strong positions in the market. Segments of "applicants" and "risky" players remained in 2010 are empty.
Data of Gartner
In 2009 Gartner estimated revenues of vendors in the world market of software for commercial investigation (BI), the analysis of business processes and performance management at $9.3 billion that is 4.2% higher than indicators of 2008 ($8.9 billion). Growth of the market in 2008 relatively 2007 was more essential: then it made 21.7%.
By a preliminary estimate of IDC, the volume of the world market of solutions for the business analysis was $8.1 billion in 2009 that is 2.6% more than indicators of 2008. According to IDC, in 2008 the market grew by 10.6% in relation to 2007 and reached volume in $7.8 billion. This assessment of IDC belongs only to business analytically tools and does not consider a segment of BPM solutions. Separately the market of finance analytical applications and analytical applications for strategic management in 2009 in the world made $2.24 billion. Discrepancy has a talk with data of Gartner that the term "business intelligence" at the moment is umbrella, and analytical companies rank as it different classes of software products.
At the same time, though both grades reflect deceleration of growth rates of the market of BI, analysts agree in opinion that the positive gain of its volume became the healthy phenomenon against the background of other stagnating IT market segments in one of the most difficult periods of history of the market of software. 2008 for the BI market was designated "quiet", and analysts expected from 2009 cardinal changes concerning its further development, however, this forecast came true not fully.
In 2009 in global market of BI the general tendency to consolidation and enlargement which was outlined in 2007 was fixed. Then as a result of a series of large absorption brands left the market Hyperion, Business Objects and Cognos, having been a part of the companies Oracle, SAP and IBM respectively.
In 2009 vendors of the first five still held a cumulative market share in 71%. SAP from shares in 22% became the market leader, with an essential separation it is followed Oracle (14.5%), by SAS Institute Inc. (SAS Institute) (SAS Institute) (14.2%), IBM (12.2%) and Microsoft (7.9%). Positions of these companies in the market of BI changed slightly. However, IBM, Microsoft and MicroStrategy was succeeded to increase income from the BI direction considerably.
According to experts of Gartner, despite the pronounced trend to market consolidation shown in the last years, the world market of BI at the same time remained rather open in 2009. Both the big, and small vendors of global market of BI proposing solutions on demand of open source or in "cloud", were forced to coexist with each other and with new industry standards.
Shares of vendors of global market of BI in 2009, $ one million
|Company||Revenue of 2009||Market share, %, 2009||Revenue of 2008||Market share, %, 2008||Growth in % of 2009-2008|
|2 084,1||22,4||2 096,1||23,4||-0,6|
|1 351,1||14,5||1 284,0||14,4||5,2|
|1 324,6||14,2||1 286,6||14,4||3,0|
|Other vendors||2 392,4||25,7||2 322,3||26,0||3,0|
|In total||9 321,9||100,0||8 946,9||100,0||4,2|
In spite of the fact that the five of the largest vendors in 2009 controlled two thirds of the BI market, interest in solutions which made the periphery of the market before, considerably amplified, in particular it concerns small innovation players. Therefore analysts of Gartner compare competitive struggle which was played in the market of BI solutions in 2009 to fight of "David and Goliath".
New economic realities and need of immediate extraction of advantage of implementation of IT systems became the main factor which induced business to address consideration of the innovation platforms. At the same time the innovation, independent BI vendors interested business in the interactive and graphical interfaces for end users constructed based on architecture of in-memory which provide simplicity and at the same time speed of use of systems. These advantages were so significant that business users, selecting such systems, consciously took the risk to receive finally quite fragmentary infrastructure consisting of the different systems and applications.
According to data of "A magic square" of Gartner, in 2009 "visionaries" of previous year became "chellendzher", i.e. passed into discharge of the companies of the second division which follow leaders: it is fair for Qlik (QlikTech) and Tibco Software. In this segment of a magic quadrant in 2009 the Tableau Software company is for the first time provided. The weight of these players in the market everything increases, analysts note. These companies concentrated on the offer of the innovation functionality of BI systems which as opposed to the traditional solutions assuming formations of global reports allowed clients to perform easily navigation on data arrays and to visualize the received results.
Magic square of vendors of BI for 2009
Touched with success of this approach, market leaders were forced to give urgently the adequate answer that, in particular, provoked an output to the market of such solutions as PowerPivot from Microsoft, SAP BusinessObjects Explorer from SAP, IBM Cognos Express from IBM and others. Gartner notes that the "zeta-like" movement from "visionaries" in "chellendzher", and then in "leaders" in general is characteristic.
As for leaders of 2009, in 2010 the effect which is had by their answer to calls of "chellendzher" will amplify that, in turn, can lead to further consolidation of the market and will force "chellendzher" to continue to work on innovations. Low results which showed in a magic kvandrant in 2009 of IBM and SAP are caused by the fact that these companies not completely recovered after the absorption which are carried out by them whereas Oracle, on the contrary, was already succeeded to endure effects of purchase and further consolidation of Siebel and Hyperion companies.
Growth of an open-source segment of BI systems in spite of the fact that the functionality of such solutions is still not comparable to the largest commercial platforms became the noticeable phenomenon in the market in 2009 also. This trend accrued within the last five years. Though budgets of open-source BI-of projects average about $30 thousand (the amount of an annual subscription), some contracts providing support in a long-term outlook reach $0.5 million that is comparable to the cost of the majority of the commercial competing solutions, Gartner notes. Significant growth to this segment was provided not only by the companies focused on economy of IT budgets, but also vendors of commercial applications which are used by open-source BI for increase in functionality of own software products.
In 2009, according to Gartner, all three subsegments of global market of the solution for a business intelligence showed growth, however, directly BI a segment developed higher rates in comparison with CPM and BPM systems.
The volume of global market of BI taking into account subsegments in 2009, $ one million
|Subsegment||Volume of 2009||Market share, %, 2009||Volume of 2008||Market share, %, 2008||Growth in %, 2008-2009|
|BI platforms||5 982,4||64,2||5 706,5||63,8||4,8|
|1 937,1||20,8||1 869,4||20,9||3,6|
|Analytical applications and BPM||1 402,4||15,0||1 371,0||15,3||2,3|
|In total||9 321,9||100,0||8 946,9||100,0||4,2|
The Segment of BI remained the largest in 2009, having made 64.2% of market total volume. 20.8% and 15% of market size respectively were the share of a segment of CPM and BPM solutions. Relatively 2008 significant changes did not happen.
As for positions of vendors in separate subsegments, indisputable leadership of SAP concerning BI solutions is complemented with the leading role which is played at the moment by Oracle in the market of CPM systems, disposing of a portfolio of Hyperion acquired company. Whereas SAS remains the leader in the field of analytical applications and BPM. In 2009 positions of IBM gained a foothold in all three key areas, Microsoft also attracted a significant amount of users due to implementation of BI functionality in the extensive product ecosystem, analysts of Gartner note.
Magic square of vendors of BI for 2008
After a year of absorption for which became famous 2007, it is possible to designate 2008 following behind it year of transition. Experts consider that 2009 will become a critical mark on which total cost of ownership the BI platform will be the major factor, and tool value in decision making process in difficult economic conditions will be considered first of all. As it was already told above, BI platforms are less subject to influence of an economic crisis, than other products. Specialists of Gartner claim that today practically all heads were convinced of the high potential of analytical solutions in respect of increase in efficiency and also in need to combine the structured transaction data with others unstructured or semi-structured. Analysts of Gartner claim that: "The economic crisis will show what companies have rather reliable information infrastructure and what are not present". According to numerous forecasts recession, fullness of the market and consolidation most likely will contain growth of BI platforms to indicators lower than 10% a year. 2008 in the field of BI passed quite quietly, as opposed to the 2007th when three leading suppliers of BI (Hyperion, Business Objects and Cognos) were absorbed by the largest developers of platforms. Of course, some merges took place and this year, but they looked not so significantly. Summing up the results of year, experts of Research Firm IDC prepared the status report on the software market for a business intelligence. According to estimates of specialists of IDC, the volume of income in the market of a business intelligence grew in a year by 12.7% and reached 22.1 billion dollars. Level of growth exceeded forecasts for 1.5%. Sales returns of tools and applications of performance management made 15.4 billion, and from platforms of Storages — 6.7 billion.
Magic square of vendors of BI for 2007
Year 2007 was rich in events if to speak about the world market BI. The most important of them were connected with consolidation of the industry (purchases by the companies Oracle, IBM and SAP specialized suppliers Hyperion, Cognos i Business Objects). The analytical company Gartner published results of a research of the market of complex BI platforms in 2007. The dominating earlier specialized suppliers pass into the background that is an obvious effect of merges and absorption. For 2007 the largest software suppliers increased the market share from one quarter to two thirds.
Thus, all researches come down to the fact that BI platforms will be submitted mainly as a part of large packets. So, on the first place there was a company Microsoft. On the second place there was Oracle which possessed at that time 21.7%. SAP took the third place, having gained 13.1%. The fourth and fifth places belonged respectively to the companies IBM (12.9%) and MicroStrategy (7.3%). Nevertheless, Gartner analytical companies, IDC and Forrester constantly review and again analyze the forecasts for 2009. Also continue to observe, despite long-term recession, stability and even growth of expenses on BI.
Taxonomy of IDC
The software of a business intelligence in taxonomy of IDC consists of three blocks:
1. Applications of performance management and analytical applications 2. BI tools 3. Platform solutions for management of the data warehouse
More detailed division is given in the following drawing
In turn the segment of BI tools is separated into two subsegments. To the first query systems, reports and analytics for end users (end-user query, reporting, and analysis - QRA), and concern the second – the advanced analytical systems (advanced analytics). Carries to advanced analytics IDC including data mining and statistical software. Carries to BI IDC both separate independent software products, and the analytical means provided by vendors of DBMS (an example - Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services).
