Two months of forced "udalenka" later many companies estimated advantages of mobility of employees, including thanks to VDI, and intend to continue this practice. Together with Alexey Cherevkov, the director of product RUSTEK of Sbklaud company, TAdviser prepared the list of important nuances which should be considered at implementation of infrastructure of virtual desktops.


Why VDI?

But, having gone to such costs, business has an opportunity to earn more, – Alexey Cherevkov specifies. – If to count the general savings from reduction of load of office, increases in service rate of infrastructure and reduction of cost of this service, decrease in a downtime of employees and to add to it a feature for involvement of highly professional employees working conditions, comfortable for them, then it is possible to speak with confidence about powerful benefit in business which will be reached by the company, using this technology.

Preparation for implementation

Before project development it is important to determine a set of the crossed great number of users by several signs:

Need of existence of own desktop and possibility of its adaptation under user requirements. Here both the minimum changes, and full control from user side are possible; Level of data with which the employee works (low, average, high, critical); Need of the employee for mobility; The used applications; The created load of network and computing powers.

After that for each of employee groups it is necessary to select the corresponding VDI model. There are two main consumption patterns of VDI:

Public model. At such model the organization receives VDI from service provider from a public cloud. Private model. In this case all infrastructure, including channel tanks, is selected only under the specific company user. Both the service provider, and the company can service such infrastructure. Anyway, it is important to estimate real business needs not to overpay for excess tools or not to appear in the mode of "austerity". Consultation with the provider having experience of implementation of large-scale VDI projects will help to minimize these risks.

In addition to significant increase in purchase costs and service of IT infrastructure, such format it was inconvenient to users. Respectively, not only reduction in cost of ownership of IT infrastructure, but also growth of satisfaction of employees thanks to more convenient organization of work, at observance of all security regulations admitted to corporations became project tasks. Besides, the maximum use of the Russian software and the equipment was one of the main requirements. As a result infrastructure of virtual desktops was unrolled. The thin client of the Russian assembly finished under our requirements with the set security aids including a trusted boot acted as the end device. As the virtualization platform the RUSTEK platform developed by our specialists, certified by FSTEC and included in the Register of the Russian software was used.


Design and implementation

After the customer defined an ultimate goal of implementation of VDI and critical requirements for security and time of availability of desktops, the solution is projected and software products are selected.

The step-by-step instruction can look so:

1. Unify the used applications;
2. Define for each of applications an opportunity for work with this or that VDI model;
3. Calculate the loading created by the application on computing powers, and its influence on all infrastructure;
4. Define the current architecture of IT infrastructure of the company;
5. Define the admissible project budget;
6. On the basis of data retrieveds to design a solution architecture;
7. Define extent of changes in business processes and infrastructure of the company and to estimate budget opportunities;
8. Buy the equipment, licenses;
9. Implement the solution (implementation, testing, trial operation).

Implementation time depends on the size of the company, a status of the current infrastructure, qualifying standards.

Proceeding from our practice, the minimum period – one-one and a half months. So much time was required to unroll VDI on 80 jobs for one customer. During inspection our specialists found out that as guest OS the Russian operating systems, all office programs – domestic are used, at the same time the user workstations work running Windows OS, – Alexey Cherevkov remembers. – About a week left on creation of the project and its statement. Two more weeks – on deployments of the virtualization platform and the VDI solution with integration into the customer's infrastructure. As much time the subsequent operational development and trial operation borrowed. Other much more large-scale project on several thousands of jobs took about seven months.
