Computers (world market)

Segments of the market

On TAdviser information on different segments of the world market of computers is provided.

Шаблон:Subject Computers

the Market of desktops decreased by 3.2% up to 93.8 million pieces

In 2019 producers delivered in total 93.8 million desktop computers worldwide (desktops; notebooks are not considered) that is 3.2% less than an indicator of year prescription. Such data contain in the research ResearchAndMarkets.

According to experts, in 2019 in the corporate sector the wave of purchase of new PCs instead of old because of transition on Windows 10 in connection with the end of support was noticed operating system Windows 7. It was expected that this factor will urge on sales of desktops at the end of 2019, considering that 70.5% of deliveries of such computer equipment are the share of a business segment.

However world sales of desktop PCs in 2019 nevertheless were reduced. Recession happened in many respects because of the shortage of Intel processors in the second half of year and also because of the macroeconomic uncertainty caused by aggravation of the trade conflict between the USA and China.

Besides, such factors as an exit of Britain from the European Union and increase in a consumption tax in Japan up to 10%, affected readiness of people and the companies to purchase desktops in the respective regions.[1]

The market will experience still difficulties, but results of this year - the explicit certificate that traditional PCs remain demanded, despite emergence of new form factors and popularity of mobile devices , the study says.

In  2019 the segment consumer desktop personal computers had  not the best times.  The situation with  the real located cash income caused concern in the Russian consumers. In  a commercial segment positive dynamics in  deliveries thanks to a large number of projects and  updating of computer parks   against the background of completion of support of Windows 7 was observed, experts note. [2]

Deliveries of monoblocks dropped by 3.4% up to 13.25 million pieces

The amount of the world market of the personal computers executed in a monoblock form factor (the monitor is built in the system unit), in 2019 was 13.25 million pieces, having decreased by 3.4% concerning the 2018th and having occupied more than 12% in total deliveries of the PC of all types. Data of Digitimes Research analytical company demonstrate to it.

The companies Lenovo and Apple of whom more than a half of sales of monoblocks in the world was the share remained leaders of this segment. Experts do not specify a share of these and other vendors. It is specified only that HP Inc. closed the three of the world's largest producers of monoblocks, and was located with a trace Dell.

In the market of computers monoblocks in 2019 there was a recession

Among the ODM companies specializing in assembly of PCs monoblocks, negative trends most strongly affected Quanta Computer which suffered because of fall of orders from Apple and HP. Besides, plans concerning the monoblock systems changed Lenovo downward that affected dynamics of her ODM partner - Wistron and Compal Electronics.

The situation in global market of monoblocks in 2019 developed unevenly. At the beginning of a year producers increased supplies of equipment waiting for the sales duties introduced into the USA on products from China. By the end of the year shipments decreased, including because of easing of demand for monoblocks in the corporate sector.

Digitimes Research also counted that world sales of notebooks in 2019 increased by 4.1%, but turned out below expectations because of the remaining shortage of processors and the fact that large producers of computers ceased to stock up with the equipment for the future because of improvement of trade relations between the USA and China.

The outbreak of a coronavirus of COVID-19 was not reflected in indicators of the computer market in 2019, but in the 2020th it, certainly, will affect. The pandemic, a seasonal factor, deficit of chips and the termination of a turnover cycle of corporate PCs in connection with the end of support Windows 7 can lead to drop in sales of portable and monoblock computers, experts consider.[3]

Lenovo became the leader — IDC

Amount of global market of personal computers (desktops, notebooks and workstations; hybrid devices are not considered) in 2019 reached 266.7 million pieces, having increased by 2.7% concerning the 2018th. And it is the first rise since 2011 when growth rates were measured by 1.7%. In the list of the largest producers there was a new leader, data of analysts of IDC demonstrate.

Lenovo won first place on deliveries of the PC in 2019, having produced about 64.8 million devices that is 8.2% more, than the previous year. The share of the Chinese vendor made 24.3% against 23.6% at American HP Inc. which in the 2018th bore the palm, though not much more came off the competitor. In 2019 shipped HP 62.9 million computers that for 4.8% exceeds value of year prescription.

The largest computer makers given to IDC

In the report it is said that Lenovo showed growth almost in all regions outside the Pacific Rim that allowed the company to record the highest dynamics among the largest producers.

HP was also succeeded to complete 2019 in plus thanks to the fact that the company could cope with a problem of shortage of Intel processors.

Dell increased a share in global market of the PC by 0.5 percent points, to 17.5%. The main merit of this rise belongs to the American market and high corporate demand in North America and in some other important regions.

At Apple and Acer of sale of computers in 2019 were reduced. At the same time recession of Apple in the market is compensated by the growing demand for iPhone and iPad, analysts say.

Last year for the market of computers was mad that led to impressive growth which happened after seven years of recession in a row. The market will experience still difficulties, but results of this year — the explicit certificate that traditional PCs remain demanded, despite emergence of new form factors and popularity of mobile devices — the vice president of IDC Ryan Reith noted.

Dynamics of change of shares of producers in the market of computers, data of IDC

World sales of computers in 2019 grew within three quarters from four that was promoted in many respects by a corporate segment. The situation improved against the background of activation of transition of business to the Windows 10 operating system in connection with completion of support of Windows 7 OS in January of the 2020th here. In particular benefited three leading manufacturing PCs from this trend. Lenovo companies, HP and Dell strengthened the positions in the market even more, and their joint share in 2019 exceeded 65% while in the 2018th it made 63%.

The Segment of traditional PCs continued to grow in EMEA countries (Europe, the Middle East, Africa) thanks to positive results both with desktop computers, and with notebooks. Despite deterioration in a situation in a supply channel of Intel processors that, as expected, will influence sales of bonus corporate products, OEM manufacturing succeeded in getting the necessary quantity of components and to help the regional PC market grow by several percent (less than for 10%).

In the American PC market the rise caused first of all by the termination of support of Windows 7, strong deliveries in the business sector, a seasonal factor and weakening of concern about introductions of duties in the USA was also observed.

By estimates of analysts of Canalys, for all 2019 of delivery of desktop computers, notebooks and workstations increased by 2.7% and reached 268.1 million pieces. Specialists emphasized that it is the first increase according to the results of all year registered for the last eight years.[4]

The first growth of the market in 8 years — Gartner

In 2019 the amount of the world market of personal computers increased for the first time in 8 years. The data of Gartner published on January 13, 2020 demonstrate to it.

By estimates of analysts, in 2019 producers delivered in total 261.2 million desktop computers, notebooks and the hybrid devices similar to Microsoft Surface line worldwide that is 0.6% more concerning the 2018th. Before shipments of the equipment fell for seven years in a row.

According to the leading analyst of Gartner Mikako Kitagawa, rise happened in many respects thanks to the fact that the companies began to update computer parks for transition to the Windows 10 operating system. At the same time many companies in developing countries, including Eurasia, the Pacific Rim and China, did not update the PCs yet that opens opportunities for preserving of growth of the PC market in 2020, the expert noted.

The largest computer makers given to Gartner

At the same time researchers allow negative dynamics and connect it with the termination of a turnover cycle of corporate systems from solutions under Windows 7 on a hardware platform of the Windows 10 level. In addition, the negative trend will also keep because of economic uncertainty because of trade wars and also the proceeding deficit of the latest Intel processors. In addition mentioned too high prices of updating in Gartner house computers under specific consumer tasks, including under games.

Three largest computer makers — Lenovo, HP Inc. and Dell — was captured by 63.1% of the market in terms of quantitative supplies of equipment at the end of 2019 whereas this share was measured in the 2018th by 60.2%. Mikako Kitagawa emphasized that Lenovo, HP Inc. and showed to Dell in 2019 growth of deliveries of the PC above dynamics of all market.

Their orientation to business market and more advantageous positions when purchasing components in the conditions of the shortage of processors helped the companies to show good results for all year — the analyst reported.

In a research it is said that except for the Pacific Rim of Lenovo recorded annual growth in sales of the PC in all regions. Only in the USA shipments of desktops at the company increased more than by 30% year on year. It allowed the Chinese vendor to save leadership and to show the highest growth rates (+8.1%) of deliveries of computers among six largest producers.

At HP deliveries of the PC grew during three last quarters 2019. The company holds the leading position in the USA, EMEA countries (Europe, the Middle East, Africa) and Latin America.

Dell increased deliveries of the PC all regions rates above average values of dynamics in each region that was promoted in many respects by strong demand for desktops of the company.

Gartner predicts permanent recession in the market of consumer PCs within the next five years, Kitagava said. He reminded that from the middle of 2019 in the market the shortage of Intel processors remains, without it growth in sales of the PC would be more considerable.

The termination of support of Windows 7 caused growth in sales of the PC worldwide

Mikako Kitagawa says that emergence of the innovation products, for example, of notebooks with the bent screens, is a key factor of growth of all computer market. Besides, demand support the initiatives simplifying operation of computers it is similar to smartphones. In particular, it is about devices which can be constantly included and work long time without recharge.

Such innovations which change behavior of users and create new product segments, is what it is worth paying attention in 2020 and further to — the analyst is sure.[5]

Lenovo became the leader — Gartner

On January 10, 2019 the Gartner analytical company published results of a research of the world market of personal computers from which it became known of change of the leader. More than all computers in 2018 delivered Lenovo — 58.5 million units that is 6.9% more, than the previous year.

HP Inc. which was on the first place 2017 increased shipments of desktops and notebooks by 2.1% up to 56.3 million, but it was not enough for deduction of a palm — the American producer slid on the second position from shares in the amount of 21.7% against 22.5% at Lenovo.

In the leading group there was one more change. ASUS which in 2017 closed top-5 the largest PC makers dropped out of the five a year later, having appeared on the sixth line. The Taiwanese company passed Acer forward. More in more detail about location of the leading vendors in the overall ranking it is possible to learn from the table below.

The world's largest computer makers given to Gartner

According to Gartner estimates, the volume of global market of computers in 2018 was 259.39 million pieces, having decreased by 1.3% concerning the 2017th. Sales fall seven years in a row. Analysts of IDC confirm this prolonged recession.

The senior analyst of Gartner Mikako Kitagawa stated two basic reasons preventing the PC market to return to growth. First, the shortage of Intel processors which was sharply shown in the second half of 2018 affects. Because of this deficit at producers it did not turn out to meet all demand for computers in the corporate sector which resulted from the updating of the IT equipment happening in the companies.[6]

We consider that this demand will be postponed for 2019 if, of course, availability of processors improves — the expert reported.

He considers the second negative factor political and economic uncertainty in a row to the country. This problem mentioned even such strong economy as the USA, and affected the most vulnerable groups of buyers, including small and medium business, Kitagava told.

Falling of the market within 7 years is IDC

In 2018 computer makers supplied to the world market in total 258.5 million desktops, notebooks and workstations that is 0.4% less concerning the 2017th. Such these analysts of International Data Corporation (IDC) provided in the regular report Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker in January, 2019. Sales are reduced seven years in a row.

According to experts, the PC market showed results above expectations thanks to the updating of computers in the companies caused by approach of date of termination of support of Windows 7 (January, 2020). High rates in a corporate segment helped to compensate recession in a consumer sector.

In all regions, except the USA, sales of computers exceeded market expectations though in the Pacific Rim there were problems because of a difficult situation in the Chinese commercial market.

The remaining economic strength between China and the USA continues to create big uncertainty in the business environment of the People's Republic of China. As demand for the Chinese goods in the USA falls, it especially influences manufacturing enterprises of all sizes in China that, in turn, leads to reduction of IT purchases by these companies — the analyst of IDC Maciek Gornicki says. — As a result it is worth expecting increase in rates of recession of the Chinese computer market in 2019. And if trade war even stronger escalates, its effects can extend also to other countries, especially in connection with the expected rate fluctuations of currencies which influence the companies in the region.

Alignment of forces among the largest computer makers is given in the table below. It should be noted that HP Inc. saved leadership, however a separation from the closest persecutor — Lenovo — it was minimum. HP Inc. the fact that it is better for the company than many competitors helped it was succeeded to endure falling of the PC market in the Pacific Rim, said in the research IDC.[7]

The largest computer makers given to IDC

Falling within 6 years is Gartner

In January, 2018 the Gartner analytical company summed up the results of the left year in the world market of personal computers. According to a preliminary estimate of specialists, producers released in the 2017th over 262.5 million devices, turning on desktop PCs, notebooks, ultraportaivny PCs of a premium class and hybrid devices based on Windows. The indicator is 2.8% less, than in 2016, thus, negative dynamics in the market is observed for six years in a row.

Researchers pay attention to the continuing consolidation of the PC industry. In 2017 the four of the largest PCs vendors controlled 64% of the market that significantly exceeds an indicator of 2011 when only 45% of the total volume of shipments of the PC fell to the share of four leading players.

The largest computer makers given to Gartner
Market leaders try to obtain economy due to large scales of production and take this advantage to force out less large producers — the leading analyst of Gartner Mikako Kitagawa notes.

The largest PC maker at the end of 2017 became HP Inc. which delivered more than 55 million computers or 21% of universal volume. In comparison with 2016 shipments at HP increased by 4.6%, and the share grew by 1.5% that allowed the American vendor to bypass the Chinese competitor of Lenovo who in the 2016th headed rating.

Lenovo fell by the second line with annual result to 54.7 million PCs devices and a share to 20.8%. For comparison, in the 2016th supply rates of computers of Lenovo reached 55.95 million pieces, and the share made 20.7%.

Dell increased deliveries to 1.1%, to 39.87 million units that corresponded to a share in 15.2%. Further according to the list Apple follows: shipments of its computers increased by 4.1%, to 19.3 million pieces, and the share increased from 6.9% up to 7.4%. The worst dynamics in top-5 was shown by ASUS at deliveries in which sank 2017 more than for 12%. As a result under control of the Taiwan vendor there were only 6.8% of the market against 7.6% in 2016.[8]

The best indicators in 6 years are IDC

In 2017 the world market of personal computers was reduced, however showed the best results for the last six years. Reported about it in International Data Corporation (IDC) analytical company.

According to the experts, in 2017 producers produced in total 259.5 million desktops, notebooks and workstations that is 0.2% less, than the previous year. the 2017th became the stablest year for the market since 2011, the study says.

The largest computer makers in pieces, data of IDC

According to analysts, the situation in the PC industry improves thanks to updating of the corporate computer equipment and increase in consumer demand. Besides, the market is helped by the falling sales of tablets which producers switch again to release of notebooks therefore in 2017 increase in number of the ultrathin, transformed and game systems was observed.

The analyst of IDC Jay Chou says that consumers are attracted by new computers which are capable to work the whole day without recharge, differ in portability and allow to solve computing problems, exacting to resources. Despite it the general situation in the PC market remains difficult, he noted.

At the end of 2017 HP Inc. returned on the first place on deliveries of the PC on a global scale, having caught a share in the amount of 22.7%. The Lenovo company which was in the lead in 2016 recorded a share at the level of 21.1%.

HP Inc. it was the producer with the best dynamics (+8.2%) in group of leaders. Worst of all the situation was at ASUS which reduced shipments desktop and portable computers by 10.6% in 2017 concerning the 2016th.

As a result of ASUS rolled down from the fifth on the sixth place in the overall ranking, having passed Acer forward. The last was helped by emphasis on game systems and chromebooks, researchers note.[9]

Drop in sales of monoblocks within 3 years

On June 7, 2017 the Digitimes Research analytical company provided some results of a research of the world market of monoblock computers. Sales of these devices fall three years in succession.

In 2016 producers produced in total 12.18 million desktops in a monoblock form factor that is 1.7% less, than the previous year, because of recession in a consumer sector. In 2014 and 2015 sales reduction of monoblocks also took place. According to specialists, the market will be recovered in 2017-2018.

Apple iMac

Global shipments of monoblocks in 2016 fell not so strongly as all computer market therefore the share of this segment in kind made record 10.4%. In the next two years this share will increase, analysts are sure.

Lenovo remained the leader of the world market of monoblocks. Moreover, in 2016 the Chinese company increased a separation from the closest persecutor - HP Inc. Four largest producers of monoblocks controlled 83.8% of the market in 2016. In the 2017th the indicator will reach 85.2% thanks to the fact that Lenovo will increase deliveries of the equipment, HP Inc. wait for strong sales in the corporate sector, and Apple provided new models, said in the research Digitimes Research.

In 2016 deliveries of iMac were measured by 2.26 million pieces against 2.53 million units the previous year. Experts expect that in 2017 shipments of these devices will rise up to 2.36 million copies.

Among contract producers of monoblocks analysts note Compal Electronics which in 2016 showed the largest growth of deliveries thanks to the orders received as a result of leaving of TPV-Inventa company from the market. It is expected that Compal will record the greatest dynamics of growth of shipments in the sector of contract manufacturing of monoblocks and at the end of 2017 and also will become the second in value producer of these computers on Taiwan after Quanta Computer.[10]

Falling the fifth year in a row

On January 11, 2017 the Gartner analytical company published results of a research of the world market of personal computers. Its volume as experts reported, is reduced five years in succession.

According to Gartner, in 2016 deliveries of desktops and notebooks on a global scale made 269.7 million pieces, having decreased by 6.2% concerning the 2015th. The market steadily falls since 2012.

Stagnation of the computer market continued in the fourth quarter 2016 because festive sales in general were weak because of fundamental changes in consumer behavior concerning the PC — the senior analyst of Gartner Mikako Kitagawa says. — All market of personal computers is static as improvement of technologies was insufficient for growth stimulation. There are several innovation form factors, such as hybrid devices and ultrathin and easy notebooks and also technology achievements, like the increased term of independent operation. This part of the market grows quickly, attracting more users for whom PCs are priority. However a segment, supported by computer enthusiasts, insufficiently big to help growth of all market.

According to Kitagava, one of negative factors for the PC market is the popularity of smartphones because of which the cycle of use of computers increases.

The list of the largest computer makers, data of Gartner for 2015-2016.

The three of the largest producers of desktops and laptops in 2016 did not undergo changes: Lenovo, HP Inc. and Dell wrote in an asset 54.7% of the market against 51.5% the previous year. However among these companies only of Dell could increase deliveries of products — by 2.6%. Moreover, Dell remained the only growing vendor in top-6 producers (see the table above).[11]

Record recession

In January, 2016 analysts of IDC announced a collapse of the world market of personal computers. Its volume in 2015 for the first time in seven years was lower than 300 million units, and recession — record.

According to calculations of experts, in 2015 vendors shipped 276.2 million desktops and notebooks worldwide that is 10.4% less, than the previous year. So strong falling in the market never was. Before the strongest regress (for 9.8%) took place in 2013, and deliveries of the PC fell lower than 300 million devices only in 2008, said in a research last time.

The computer market endured the strongest recession in the history, and Apple remained the only growing producer

Experts explain falling of the computer industry with a row to the reasons: the increased term of use of the PC, the competition from smartphones and tablets, economic shocks (devaluation of world currencies and drop in oil prices) and strong 2014 when demand was stimulated with the termination of support of Windows XP OS and promotion of inexpensive devices.

The PC market remains competitive, the economic situation weakened against the background of recent falling in the stock market of China — the vice president of IDC Loren Loverde says. — However updates of computers should be resumed in the 2016th, especially towards the end of a year. The accelerated transition of the companies to Windows 10 is expected, and the activity of consumers also should grow in the second half of the year.

According to the analyst, many postponed purchase of the new PC, but so cannot proceed long, otherwise these people risk to face security concerns and the weak performance of systems. Most of these users, most likely, will update the computers as a result of emergence of new products and the attractive prices, Loverde is sure.

In the five of the leading PCs vendors in 2015 there was only one change: Apple came to the fourth place, having outstripped Acer and ASUS. The Apple corporation remained the only largest producer with the growing deliveries of computers. In more detail about alignment of forces among brands it is possible to learn from the table below.

Falling the fourth year in succession

On January 12, 2016 the Gartner analytical company published results of a research of the world market of personal computers. Its volume, by estimates of specialists, decreases four years.

Gartner counted that in 2015 deliveries of desktops and notebooks on a global scale made 288.7 million units that is 8% less, than the previous year. The market began to fall in 2012 after emergence of a large number of tablets.

Falling of the PC market continues 4 years

In 2015 devaluation of world currencies was one of the main problems for the computer industry. Because of this factor the release of the PC in Japan and the countries of Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America at the end of 2015 decreased almost by 10% in comparison with the 2014th. In the USA and the Pacific Rim regress was minimum as rate fluctuations of currencies did not influence these markets.

In October-December, 2015 the volume of the global computer industry decreased by 8.3% in comparison with the same period of previous year, having been 75.7 million pieces. This quarter recession was the fifth in a row and showed that even the New Year's Eve season does not promote the general accumulation of demand for the PC that in turn indicates changes of a consumer consumer behavior concerning these devices, the analyst of Gartner Mikako Kitagawa notes.

According to him, among corporate clients of Windows 10 received the mass of positive responses, however in the fourth quarter 2015 of the company only tested this OS and did not hurry to pass to it.

Of a share of six largest PCs vendors — Lenovo, HP, Dell, ASUS, Apple and Acer — in 2015 was the share to 73.1% of world deliveries against 70.4% the previous year. Lenovo saved a market leadership from shares in 19.8%. Top three also included HP (18.2%) and Dell (13.6%). Follow ASUS (7.3%), Apple (7.2%) and Acer (7%). Among the listed producers only Apple was succeeded to increase deliveries of computers in 2015, data of Gartner demonstrate.[12]

The third recession in a row

On August 26, 2015 the International Data Corporation (IDC) research company posted the message from which it became known of a situation in the world market of computers on the website.

In 2014 as analysts counted, producers shipped 308.3 million personal computers worldwide that is 2.1% less, than the previous year. Annual market size fell in the third time in a row, however, rates of decrease were almost five times less in comparison with like those in 2013.

In 2014 producers shipped 308.3 million personal computers worldwide that is 2.1% less, than the previous year

Improvement of a situation in the computer industry happened thanks to the termination of official support of Windows XP and with the Bing Windows 8.1 program within which vendors released the budget notebooks which are in high demand in many regions, especially in emerging economies. However, even these devices did not save a segment of laptops from falling.

According to assessment of IDC, in 2014 deliveries of portable computers made 174.4 million pieces against 178.4 million devices the previous year. In the market of deskotop of shipment were reduced from 136.7 million units in 2013 to 133.9 million products a year later.

Analysts allow return of the computer industry to growth not earlier than 2017. If this forecast comes true, decrease in deliveries of the PC on a global scale will last five years.

To number of the negative factors influencing a situation in the industry, specialists carry a high rate dollar because of which the computer equipment rises in price and also a possibility of free updating of devices based on Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 to the version Windows 10.

At the same time the negative impact of popularity of smartphones on sales of computers weakened. IDC say that in 2015 growth of the world market of smart phones will slow down three times – up to 10.4%, and in the years ahead shipments of these devices will increase by only several percent.

Analysts did not give alignment of forces among computer makers for 2014 in the research.[13]

Decline of the market by 2.2%

On March 12, 2015 analysts of International Data Corporation (IDC) published the data characterizing a status of the world computer industry. Its volume as experts counted, in 2014 was reduced as in piece, and monetary value despite a number of advantage factors.[14]

According to assessment of IDC for 2014, sales of desktops and notebooks on a global scale reached $201 billion that is 0.8% less, than the previous year. Producers shipped 308.1 million devices — 2.2% less in comparison with 2013. In regions with developed economy of delivery grew up for 8.4% up to 144.5 million pieces whereas in developing countries recession for 9.5% is recorded at the capacity of shipments of 163.7 million PCs.

"Rise in the developed regions helped the world market to be stabilized in 2014, however growth in the long term will depend on recovery of demand in emerging markets, but it will hardly occur, considering popularity of mobile devices there" — the vice president of IDC Loren Loverde considers.

In the report of IDC it is said that the situation in the global computer industry improved in the second half of 2014 in many respects thanks to the fact that distributors and sellers hurried to buy as much as possible inexpensive devices within with the Bing Windows 8.1 program before its termination.

Microsoft was not succeeded to save the PC market

The initiative of Windows 8.1 of with Bing assumes runtime royalty fees, low in comparison with normal Windows 8.1, for vendors in exchange for installation of products of Microsoft by default. The discount size is unknown to the producers working according to this program, however Microsoft said that the retail cost of the PC based on Windows 8.1 with Bing can be lower than $250.

As analysts note, with the Bing Windows 8.1 project will be complete at the beginning of 2015 then the average prices on computers will spread up. Besides, the general rise in price will be influenced by the high dollar exchange rate and the growing demand for expensive hybrid devices with the thin body and the touch display.

On similar products and also monoblocks and other growing segments vendors will probably place emphasis in the conditions of the price pressure and the competition from producers of mobile electronics, Loverde believes. According to him, consolidation of players can become one more method of fight against difficulties in the PC market.

Forecast of Gartner

According to the forecast of Gartner of July, 2014[15], for the end of 2014 the world market of the PC should show insignificant, but nevertheless revival after decline by 9.5% in 2013. The Mirovy market of tablets at the same time will slow down growth and will reach 256 million pieces of equipment for the end of 2014.

Cumulative deliveries of computer devices (the PC, tablets and mobile phones), as expected, will reach 2.4 billion pieces of equipment in 2014 that for 4.2% it is more than 2013. Growth of a segment of the PC separately (including desktop computers, notebooks) separately will be 2.9% at the end of 2014.

The next turnover cycle of the workstations used in business including replacement of computers by Windows XP, should support a positive trend in the market, especially in Western Europe. In 2014 only in mature markets because of technical obsolenscence about 60 million professional computers will be replaced.

As well as any device in the market, tablets they pass lifecycle from the first interested buyers to mass demand, and then its fading, and so in mature markets already on the finish of this curve, analysts believe. Will urge on this segment not so much emergence of new functionality of devices, how many considerable reduction of prices of them.

Sales of mobile devices will reach 1.9 billion units in 2014 that for 3.1% it is more than 2013. The Segment of smartphones will continue to feel perfectly: even in 2018 88% of sales of mobile devices in comparison with 66% in 2014 will fall on it.

In 2014 a rank of the most quickly growing operating systems (OS) will reserve Android (plus 30%) and iOS (15%). Mobile devices on Windows will raise a howl 10% of the market in 2018 in comparison with 4% in 2014.

Results of year:-9.8%

At the beginning of March, 2014 the Research Firm IDC prepared final calculations of volume of the world market of the PC [16]. According to these data, at the end of 2013 the world market of the PC decreased in volume by 9.8%, but not for 10.1%, predictably earlier. However, the difference of the fact and the forecast was poorly consolatory.

Still the healthiest processes proceeded in emerging markets of the PC, but they were weaker in adverse economic conditions, than mature markets where in the previous years growth rates of sales of computers were much lower. In the medium term emerging markets will recoup, believe in IDC, but so far, most likely, only "in zero". So will come to volumes which they reached prior to recession.

IDC, 2014

Apparently from the data given above, in 2013 PC supply rate (both desktop, and portable) in emerging markets reached 181.9 million units, on developed - 133.3 million units, all in the world - 315.1 million. In the 2014th year, according to forecasts, these digits will be even lower and will not be recovered even by 2018th year. So, in the 2018th year the world supply rate of the PC in all form factors will equal 291.7 million units, in the developed markets - 120 million units, on developing - 171.7 million pieces of equipment.

Thus, in the 2013th year falling of the world market in general is 9.8%, emerging markets - 11.3% developed - 7.6%. In 2014 the markets will go to minus respectively (in the same sequence) for 6.1%, 7.8%, 3.8%, and even in 2018 negative dynamics of the world market will be 0.2% developed - 2%, and only emerging markets will be able to add 1.1% at last.

First quarter

According to the results of the first quarter 2013 the world's largest analytical companies, IDC and Gartner, recorded decline in the world market of the PC to values of 2009. So, according to[17], world deliveries of the PC in the first quarter made 2013 of 79.2 million pieces of equipment that is 11.2% less, than the previous year. Lower than 80 million units will reach an indicator of sales the market for the first time in recent years - from the second quarter 2009 it did not fall to so low values.

Outputs of IDC were even more gloomy. According to[18], the world supply rate of the computer equipment in the first quarter was 2013 76.3 million units that is 13.9% less than the same period of 2012 (market decline only by 7.7% was expected). An indicator of annual decrease at the same time the worst IDC for all history of observations from the moment of their beginning in 1994. Besides, it is already the fourth quarter in a row when the market shows negative dynamics.

Dynamics of the world market of the PC

IDC, 2013

IDC note that recession of consumer demand has a depressive impact on such large vendors as HP and Dell despite all their attempts on business restructuring. The only happy exception makes Lenovo which manages to implement aggressive strategy in so difficult market conditions.

"In spite of the fact that falling of the market was expected, its value was very unexpected and disturbing", - the director of research of IDC David Daoud said. "The industry is at the crossroads, and strategic decisions should be made right now, fight how exactly against distribution of alternative devices and remain relevant for consumers", - he added. He believes that vendors of the PC should review not only structure of business, but also product portfolios, supply chains and many other things.

According to Mikako Kitagava (Mikako Kitagawa), the analyst of Gartner, unlike the PC market for private users, in a segment of a professional computer hardware the situation is much more positively. About 50% of the PC market are the share of this segment, and here even the sales growth managed by the continuing updating of the obsolete equipment at the enterprises is fixed.

Third quarter

The world market of personal computers in the third quarter showed 2012 decrease in supply rate of the equipment by 8.6% in comparison with the same period of 2011, according to IDC [19] while before analytics of this company forecast only 3.8% a decline. At the same time experts believe that such weak results of the market in anticipation of entry into the market of Windows 8 in the fourth quarter 2012 – quite logical and expected phenomenon.

Among the regional markets a number of the countries showed a bigger decrease in supply rates of the computer equipment, than in general on the market. So, in the USA in the third quarter 2012 in annual terms deliveries decreased by 12.4% (decrease by 9.5% was expected). In EMEA region, according to IDC, rather stable indicators, and in Japan and the Pacific Rim – positive growth were reached.

According to IDC, the HP company from shares of 15.9% remained the market leader on supply rate in the third quarter 2012 among vendors. Lenovo, though approached closely "the blue giant" from 15.7% of the market, nevertheless remained on the second place. Places from the third on the fifth were taken by Dell, Acer and Asus.

Top-5 world vendors of the PC, the third quarter 2012, one thousand units

IDC, 2012

It is interesting that along with IDC the status report on the world market of the PC in the third quarter was issued 2012 also by other reputable research company - Gartner. According to this firm, the Chinese Lenovo for the first time in history came out on top on deliveries of the PC in the world. However, analysts of Gartner specify that it is only estimation. Gartner estimates market shares of Lenovo and HP at 15.7% and 15.5% respectively. Further Dell, Acer and Asus, as well as at IDC follow.

The second quarter

World deliveries of the PC in the second quarter decreased 2012, according to Gartner Gartner Says Worldwide PC Shipment Growth Was Flat in Second Quarter of 2012[20], by 0.1% in comparison with the same period of last year up to 87.46 million pieces of equipment. Both the global economic instability, and that fact that sales of ultrabooks did not meet expectations affected: all of them at an early stage of adaptation though appeared in the market in 2011.

According to IDC Global PC Shipments Stalled in the Second Quarter While Buyers Remain Cautious And Market Waits For New Products[21], the world market of the PC in the second quarter in quantitative calculation also sank 2012 for 0.1% in annual terms up to 86.73 million piece of equipment. Let's remind that on the end of the year market growth, according to forecasts of IDC, should be 2.1%. Analysts of this company also connect stagnation in the market with processes in world economy, insignificant progress of ultrabooks and give the conservative forecast up to the third quarter, adding that the release of Windows 8 will have a little considerable impact on the market not earlier than the fourth quarter 2012.

According to Gartner, in the second quarter 2012 among vendors on supply rate was in the lead HP, 14.9% of the market, on the second place – Lenovo (14.7%) were the share of it. In comparison with the second quarter 2011 of Acer and Dell traded places: Acer now on the third place from 11%, and Dell on the fourth – from 10.7%. Closes the first five of Asus, 7% were the share of it, another 41.7% of the market occupy other vendors.

Gartner, July, 2012

It is interesting that, according to IDC, the first five of vendors for the second quarter 2012 looks a little in a different way: in decreasing order of a share in the market HP (15.5%), Lenovo (14.9%), Dell (11.1%), Acer (10.4%) and Asus (7.1%) follow.

Key vendors in the world market of software on supply rate (in one thousand pieces of equipment)

IDC, July, 2012

In the USA deliveries of the PC in the second quarter 2012, according to Gartner, reached 15.9 million units that is 5.7% lower than the same period of 2011 (by estimates of IDC – 10.6% lower). From the regional point of view the greatest gain was registered in EMEA region, the Pacific Rim and Japan whereas in America in general of a situation remained quite depressive. In EMEA region of delivery of the PC in the second quarter 25.1 million units reached 2012 that is 1.9% more, than the previous year. In Western Europe and in particular Southern Europe demand for the PC at the same time was quite low.

First quarter

According to preliminary data Gartner, in the first quarter world supply rates of the PC reached 2012 89 million pieces – it is 1.9% more in comparison with the same period of last year. Earlier Gartner predicted decrease in rates of sales by 1.2%. IDC (International Data Corporation) Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker provides the following data in the quarterly report: growth of deliveries at the level of 2.3% against 0.9% predicted in February.

According to Mikako Kitagava (Mikako Kitagawa), the senior analyst of Gartner, global dynamics of change of sales represents "the average temperature on hospital". EMEA region really showed much more the best indicators of growth, than it was possible to assume, on the contrary, in the Pacific Rim of sale very strongly sank – influence of deceleration of growth rates of the markets of India and China affected. Level of penetration of the PC in these regions still remains low, and until recently many vendors laid great hopes on emerging markets. Now Gartner suggests to treat such forecasts more carefully.

Though the first quarter traditionally differs in low demand for the PC in consumer segment, Gartner notes abnormal decrease of the activity of buyers this year. The basic reason – the competition for budgets of consumers sharply increased, and Apple in this battle wins so far.

According to analysts of Gartner, because of rather low demand for the PC the deficit of hard drives caused by a flood in Thailand had practically no impact on the market in the first quarter. Only the single markets and segments, in particular, of budget consumer notebooks suffered. IDC point out the shortage of hard drives in channel and retail networks what, first of all, enthusiasts, individual and small collectors suffer from. According to Loren Loverde (Loren Loverde), the vice president of IDC Worldwide Consumer Device Trackers if not deficit, results could be better.

The first quarter 2012 in some way can be considered transitional. The PC industry is in waiting of two important events now – a release Intel of the Ivy Bridge platform and OS Microsoft Windows 8. Emergence of these products should be the cause for updating of the PC and, as a result, a good incentive for demand growth. Loverd points to a possibility of recovery of the market in the fourth quarter if producers of hard drives manage to meet demand fully.

NR was succeeded to strengthen the leader's position in the market and to increase a share to 17.2% in the first quarter 2012. The company managed to create a sufficient stock of hard drives and to overcome the internal squabbles connected with attempts of the former chief executive to change a strategic direction of development.

Lenovo showed the highest growth rates of supply rates at the level of 28.1% by results in the first quarter 2012. The company equally successfully performs expansion on corporate and consumer markets.

Dell in comparison with last year underfulfilled in many regions. For the first time in two years supply rates of the PC of this producer decreased in the Pacific Rim. According to preliminary estimates analysts of Gartner it was the result of insufficient attention from Dell to consumer products of initial level. The company tried to be focused more on a corporate segment.

Market of the USA

PC supply rates on the market of the USA in the first quarter reached 2012 15.5 million that is 3.5% less in comparison with the same period of last year. However, analysts of Gartner expected reduction of the market for 6.1% at all. IDC gives more moderate estimates: growth of deliveries of 1% against the forecast at the level of 0.6%.

It is remarkable that despite emergence of the PC in a form factor of a monoblock and ultrabooks, American the market showed very modest indicators of growth. IDC consider the reason for everything conservatism of Americans and waiting of an exit Microsoft Windows 8. In the developed market of the USA the consumer direction more than in other regions, touches on itself budgets of buyers, – consider in Gartner. Deficit of hard drives had a moderate impact on a segment of the most cheap solutions that saved representatives of channel to pursue aggressive price policy. However, it is unknown whether consumers will become interested in inexpensive PCs, in the North American market the set of other devices competes with them.

Market of Asia and countries of the Pacific Ocean

In the Pacific Rim in the first quarter 2012 supply rates of the PC reached 30.3 million units – it is 2% more in comparison with the same period of last year. As in China the program for providing rural territories with computers completed the work, demand on desktop PCs in this country was sharply reduced. The program of the municipal government for representation to students of notebooks started in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu on a free basis, on the contrary, continued the work and supported demand. Presumably, before its end still there are several quarters.

The market in the countries of Latin America in the first quarter was reduced 2012 by 3.2% – supply rates were 9 million PCs. Sales of notebooks grew by 0.4%, and desktop PCs dropped by 7.6%. Many local collectors suffered from deficit on hard drives.

Deliveries of the PC in Japan in the first quarter grew 2012 by 11.5% and reached 4.4 million units. So noticeable growth of analytics of Gartner is connected with frankly weak indicators of last year which reason were earthquakes which happened in March and a tsunami.

The forecasts which came true are also not present

During 2012 forecasts of leading experts concerning results of year in the world market of the PC constantly changed downwards that becomes already bad tradition. So, in August, 2012 in IDC assumed that the world market of the PC in 2012 will grow only by 0.9% as deliveries slowed down growth rate again. And in June, 2012 analysts of IDC expected growth 5%.

Comparison of rates of a gain of deliveries of the PC in the developing and mature markets

Deceleration of growth rates of the PC market in the Pacific Rim affected rates of a gain of emerging markets in general whereas the majority of the developed PC markets like the USA show decrease in supply rates again. IDC predicts that from 2013 to 2016 the annual average growth rate of volume of the world market of the PC, however, will reach 7.1%, and during the period from 2012 to 2016 – 8.4%.

Apparently from charts is higher, the world market of the PC by 2016 can reach 483.1 million pieces of equipment from which 162 million is necessary on stationary and 321.1 million on portable PCs. At the same time on the markets of developing countries 303.5 million units, and on mature markets – 179.6 million is necessary.

Taxonomy: The personal computers (PC) and portable devices of type of mini-notebooks and lept belong to the PC market in terminology of IDC. Media tablets and other devices of pocket type do not treat the market.

Gartner expected that world deliveries of the PC in 2012 will reach 368 million units that is 4.4% more than result of 2011. Thus analysts expect higher growth rate of deliveries in 2013 when they are able to reach 400 million units.

In April, 2012 Gartner published the forecast for the world market of tablet computers. According to analysts, in 2012 the total quantity of the sold "tablets" will make 118.9 million pieces that is almost twice more, than in 2011 (60 million pieces).

Analysts from IHS iSuppli expected that in 2012 376 million units of the PC in comparison with 399 million in 2011 will be supplied to the world market.

The impact of virtualization, clouds and mobilization on the PC market

The PC era as main tool of an information access and to applications in the corporate sector approaches the end. According to analysts of Gartner, by 2014 personal clouds will exceed in popularity computers in usual understanding of this word (thick clients).

The organizations should rethink cardinally traditional approaches to delivery of applications and services on jobs, and to users to learn to take benefits from new much more flexible model of interaction with computing systems. A role of the last on themselves smartphones, tablets, even even more often begin to touch devices of consumer electronics which get into a corporate segment more and more persistently. In this context cloud services can be considered as some kind of link between various end devices and a web.

Analysts of Gartner select five megatrends in the market which serve as premises of transformation of model of personal calculations.

Konsyyumerization of IT

Today it is possible to speak about democratization of technologies as the most modern of them are to the same extent available to top managers and non-management employees of the organizations with confidence. Distribution of the Internet and instruments of social interaction in no small measure served as an incentive to learn to use IT technologies in everyday life even to people with humanitarian mentality.

Technologies of virtualization allowed to abstract the level of applications from a certain type of devices, OS, even processor architecture.

Change of design approaches, to delivery and use of software

Applications everywhere become cross-platform and assume accomplishment of a part of the code on server side or a cloud environment.

Cloud computing

Emergence of the cloud concept gives a set of resources, almost unlimited on scalability, in hands of users.

Global mobilization

In combination with cloud services mobile devices can cope with the most different tasks.

The fourth quarter

According to the results of the 4th quarter 2011 of the company IDC also Gartner reported that sales of the PC in the fourth quarter decreased in comparison with previous year. Though in 2011 in the sector software, as expected, vendors worked better, than in the sector of hardware products, weak market of the PC influences not only suppliers of microchips it seems Intel, but also on vendors SOFTWARE whose income to some extent depends on sales of applications on new PCs.

According to Gartner, in the fourth quarter 2011 world deliveries of the PC made 92.2 million units - 1.4% less, than in the fourth quarter 2010.

In turn IDC declared deceleration of sales of personal computers in the last three months 2011. The recession reasons, according to analysts of the company: weak economy, deficit of hard drives as a result of a flood in Thailand and the competition from tablets. According to the estimates of IDC, in the fourth quarter 2011 world deliveries of the PC made 92.7 million units that is 0.1% less in comparison with the same period of 2010.

According to Mikako Kitagawa (Mikako Kitagawa), the top analyst of Gartner company while the economic instability in the market of Western Europe had the impact on deliveries of the PC for consumer market expected improvement of economy in North America could not stimulate consumer demand for the PC in this region. "The healthy corporate segment of the PC market, as well as growth in emerging markets, could not compensate a failure of sales in the developed markets. Universal sales growth still looks negatively", - the expert noted.

Third quarter

In the third quarter Lenovo company, having strengthened the pressure upon the PC market, could outstrip Dell in supply rate, and now, according to the message of IHS iSuppli, prepares an attack on the place of the leader which still occupies HP. It is a courageous step for the company which still in the first quarter took years the fourth position in the market.

Lenovo could reach strong indicators in spite of the fact that the PC market in general grew only by 5.5% in the 3rd quarter. At the same time the company showed growth of supply rate in 14.5% and transition of digit to 10.9 million units of the equipment in the second quarter to 12.5 million units in the third. Now 13.9% of universal deliveries of the PC (according to iSuppli) are the share of Lenovo that everything on 4.2 percent points below the market leader - HP. According to analysts of iSuppli, operations of Lenovo issue it as PC maker, is closer than all leader who is to a position.

According to Mathew Wilkins (Matthew Wilkins), the top analyst of iSuppli, Lenovo with benefit used high demand on the PC, existing in domestic market of China. "While sales of the PC in the USA, Europe and other regions of the world suffered because of a weak economic environment and the growing competition from tablets, in China sales of the PC and notebooks remain very hot. It allows Lenovo to implement the superiority before the American competitors and brings it to a position in which the company is already able to fight with HP for a market leadership".

The present report of iSuppli has something in common with the industry data of Gartner analytical company which were issued in October. In them Gartner notes that in the third quarter Lenovo grew so that can take Dell place, generally thanks to "aggressive marketing" in both sectors of the market: corporate and consumer.

In August the HP company announced a possibility of an output of business of the PC in the separate enterprise. And until she reviewed the solution and announced continuation of participation in this business, the probability of similar succession of events excited the market.

The CEO of Dell company Michael Dell noted later that the turmoil in the industry caused by operations of HP created opportunities for other vendors of the PC. "Any existing uncertainty or confusion is an opportunity, - he said in October, at the summit Web 2.0. – Undoubtedly, we saw considerable opportunities in what occurs [in HP]. Customers reflect on what will occur in a year or two, and the events in the company do not inspire in them confidence".

Let's remind that the first quarter 2011, according to the researches Gartner, Lenovo finished with indicators 8.137 million units of the PC in deliveries and a market share in 9.7%. And the third quarter was complete with indicators 12.352 million units and 13%5 respectively.

The second quarter

  • According to Canalys analytical company, in the II quarter 2011 of sale of the personal computers (PC) grew to the level of year prescription by 17% up to 97.3 million devices. A basic reason of growth — sale of tablets which Canalys refers to the PC too. In them neither Intel processors or AMD on x86 platform, nor Windows practically meet, and growth of their sales lowered Wintel share to an indicator, record-breaking low for the last 20 years — about 82% (14% at planshetogv and another 4% — at "Macintosh" of Apple which do not use the Wintel platform too)[22].

Apple thanks to IPad tablets for the first time became the world's second computer maker after HP.

From the moment of the creation in 1976 Apple always sold computers with own operating system and itself developed their architecture. It seemed 15 years ago that Apple hopelessly lost to the actual developer of an ecosystem Wintel — the American IBM which allowed other companies to stamp "IBM compatible computers". When in 1998 to a position of the CEO of Apple her co-founder Steve Jobs returned, the founder of Microsoft Bill Gates sjekhidnichat: "What do I cannot understand, so why it (Jobs) continues the attempts? He understands that he will not win". In those days capitalization of Apple made $3 billion, and on July 29, 2011 — $362 billion are, more, than at Microsoft ($229 billion) and Intel ($118 billion), combined.

Apple competes not only to Wintel, but also to the Android platform from Google. This system, as well as Windows, any computer maker can use. And in the II quarter 2011, according to Strategy Analytics, from Android fell on devices already 1/3 all tablets sold in the world.

The II quarter 2011 became successful and for Acer, released the first Android tablet in April, 2011: according to Canalys, it was actively bought in Germany, Russia and the USA. In Russia in the II quarter 90,000 Acer tablets are sold, the head of its Russian office Gleb Mishin says. But the Android platform still "incomplete" and tablets "identically" therefore Apple has no serious competition, the leading analyst of Mobile Research Group Eldar Murtazin is sure.

  • China overtook the USA, according to the results of the II quarter 2011 having for the first time become the world's largest market on sales of personal computers, The Wall Street Journal with reference to IDC writes. In April-June, 2011 shipments of computers in China reached 18.5 million pieces whereas in the USA this digit made 17.8 million. And in comparison with the II quarter 2010 of sale in the USA were reduced by 4.2%, and in in China — on the contrary, grew by 14%[23].

In terms of money the Chinese market also exceeded the USA — $11.9 billion against $11.7 billion — having occupied 22% of the world market of personal computers.

Nevertheless, IDC predicts that according to the results of all 2011 of the USA it nevertheless will remain on the first place as sales in the USA usually become more active in the end of the year. By calculations of analysts, for 2011 in the USA 73.4 million personal computers — 1 million more than in China will be sold. And here in 2012 China at last will overtake the USA on this indicator — 85.1 million against 76.6 million, they predict.

Across Russia data are not provided. For comparison in the I quarter 2011 in Russia 2.31 million personal computers were shipped.

China advances the second year the USA on the size of the market of cars — in 2010 their sales increased by 32% to 18.06 million pieces (including trucks). In the USA last year 11.6 million cars were sold. According to forecasts of OECD, China can exceed the USA on industrial output in 5-7 years, and on GDP volume — till 2030.

Forecasts of IDC and Gartner: theory and practice

The stated above results of IDC and Gartner about a situation in the PC market in the first quarter 2012 let not essentially, but nevertheless differ among themselves and, occasionally, considerably. We suggest to address the companies made earlier these research to forecasts and to look how afterwards they were exact.

IDC foretold that in 2010 217.2 million portable PCs in comparison from 169 million in 2009 will be supplied to the market. It was expected that by 2012 the portable systems will occupy 70% of the market in quantitative expression. At the end of 2010 the total amount of the PC market was 346.8 million units. If to assume that the forecast of IDC was exclusively correct, the share of notebooks in this volume reached nearly 63% - obviously overestimated digit for 2010. Growth of deliveries was mainly caused by increase in interest in portable devices in emerging economies.

The president and the chief executive officer of Intel Paul Otellini (Paul Otellini), expected to see a share of netbooks and other similar systems in 2010 in 20%, IDC – in 12% of the market in numerical expression. Higher forecast from Intel is not casual – it is a monopolist of the market of processors for the cheap systems. It, in particular, joined in in the period of an active phase of recession. Conservative estimates of IDC were closer to the truth, really successful product category netbooks did not become.

As for tablet PCs, according to the forecast of IDC, in 2010 should sell about 7 million such devices and about 46 million – in 2014. As soon it became clear, only in the fourth quarter 2010 it was succeeded to sell 10.7 million tablets (data of Strategy Analytics).

Gartner lowered the forecast of growth of deliveries of the PC for 2011 at the level of 15.9% against 18.1% assumed earlier. According to the updated forecast, should supply 409 million PCs to the world market.

The predicted supply rates had to be reduced by 2009-2011 in view of a number of factors, explained in Gartner.

First, analysts recorded change in consumer behavior - the shift of interest in the innovation gadgets to which new models of smartphones and multimedia tablets belong. Analysts believe that buyers in the developing regions which have no personal computer yet can refuse its purchase for benefit of the tablet which possibilities will only approach over time PC opportunities whereas the convenience of consumption of content and communication on social networks using the tablet costs a cut above already now.

Secondly, decrease in growth rates of deliveries happens owing to economy. Understanding that process of recovery from the crisis can take extra time (and it is unknown what), consumers incline to waiting a little with purchase of a new system to the best times. The same concerns also a corporate segment. Already now there are examples of transition to IPad of the whole companies which believe that this computer will become outdated not so quickly as a traditional system.

Analysts also pointed to inability of the market of traditional personal computers to offer something really new. It is difficult to think up more convenient systems which would receive deafening success, and everything that it is necessary - to reduce the prices and to lean on volumes, and this model already sputtered out. Tablets - one of the new directions which can help with preserving of revenues of producers.

Gartner also mentioned one more factor of decrease in growth rates of the market - technology of virtual working spaces. It is expected that with distribution of thin clients need for updating of the hardware in workplaces will recede into the background. It will have a negative impact on sales of desktop PCs in an office party a segment. However the specified factor will begin to work not earlier than 2012.

In general, outputs of Gartner were right, however as a result market size in quantitative expression in 2011 did not exceed even 352.8 million PCs. The bad economic situation in Western Europe and the shortage of hard drives in the fourth quarter because of a flood in Thailand became the reasons of so strong decrease in supply rates.

Analysts of Gartner are sure that deliveries of desktop PCs will continue to grow in 2011-2012, in 2013 growth will be minimum, and in 2014 negative dynamics will appear. Sales of the portable systems will show diametrical results – prompt growth rates annually up to 2014 on which the forecast is given. In 2014, according to IDC, 426.9 million portable computers will be supplied to the world market. By this time tablets "will eat" 10% of the PC market in quantitative expression (IDC and Gartner do not carry tablets to personal computers).

2010: Sales growth for 13% up to 350 million PCs. Leader of HP

Year on year deliveries of the PC to the world market in 2010 grew by 13.8% up to 350.9 million pieces - according to Gartner - and for 13.6% up to 346.2 million - according to IDC. The best result was shown by Lenovo which deliveries grew by 37.3%. In addition to Lenovo, in the first five of producers the average market value was exceeded only by one company - Toshiba. In 2010 the company started new strategy for promotion of a brand and celebrated the 25 anniversary from the date of release of the first laptop.
