2019: To the Chinese janitors compulsorily put on GPS bracelets

At the beginning of April, 2019 from Nanjing "smart" bracelets with the GPS receiver which keep track of their location in real time forced to carry the Chinese janitors and send the sound notification if the owner did not move more than 20 minutes. On the gadget the intervention button is also provided in case the worker will appear it is in danger — by its clicking the signal of an urgent situation comes to police. In total the new program covered more than 500 workers.

However the first report on use of the device caused negative reaction on the Chinese social networks: many users called in question practicality of a bracelet and offered support to cleaners. The Chinese mass media reported that the manufacturing company was forced to get rid of a sound signal because of charges of human rights violation. Nevertheless other functions of the clock remained on site, including tracking of location of workers.

Information from a bracelet is transferred directly to the managing center which guarantees that janitors remain in the zone designated by the customer and do not interrupt work. As a result many janitors complain that because of similar shadowing they should walk the street even backwards-forward after work is already performed.

Yang Haiping, the employee of the center, explained that the program using "smart" bracelets is directed to performance improvement of work of workers, cutting of costs for management and ensuring complete monitoring of work. The observation system implemented in a bracelet is activated only in working time and does not break personal privacy of workers, Zhang Dongzhong, the vice president of the company told.

In general the idea of such bracelet is not new. The similar technology is used in India since 2018, and in China similar products for monitoring of "lazy" workers, for example, office the admission, equipped with function of a dictophone and the GPS module are on sale for a long time. In 2018 Amazon registered two patents describing a bracelet which monitors movements and employees productivity of a warehouse.^[1]
