IPTV — the youngest, fast-growing and the most profitable on average revenue counting on one subscriber (ARPU) a segment of the market of a pay TV. As of the beginning of 2016, it occupies 12% of a subscriber base of Pay TV in Russia, or about 5 million subscribers. About 150 thousand IPTV prefixes are annually manufactured in Russia, at the same time import of the equipment makes 1.4 million devices.

The market of the Russian market of a pay TV continues to grow grows at the expense of the largest players and also due to growth of number of users of IPTV. According to the research conducted by the analytical and consulting agency iKS-Consulting according to the results of the first half of the year the number of the Russian subscribers of a pay TV grew by 10% and 36.4 million. Penetration of service in Russia makes 65% today.

By iKS-Consulting estimates, the volume of the Russian market of paid TV exceeds 54 billion rubles of J'son & Partners Consulting, estimates the size of the market of paid TV in Russia at the end of 2013 at 57.1 billion rubles of ARPU of the market was 136 rub/month.

Penetration of paid TV in the next years will continue to grow and will make more than 72% by 2018. Federal districts with the highest penetration of service of paid TV – traditionally the CFD and the Northwestern Federal District. Let's note that in comparison with the first quarter 2013, the penetration share in these districts increased slightly — by 3 and 4 percent points, respectively. In the SFD and the FEFD according to the results of the first quarter 2014 penetration of paid TV exceeded 50%. The Republic of Crimea made the contribution to growth Russian telecommunication the market, having increased it by 366 thousand subscribers. Though penetration of service in the Republic of Crimea remains to the lowest and makes 48%.

Seven companies have the base exceeding 1 million users today. The total subscriber base of the largest companies grew quicker than the market and the average gain made — 12%.

Rating TOP-7 of the largest operators of Russia is headed: Tricolor TV (10,560 thousand subscribers, gain of 11%), Rostelecom (7,705 thousand, gain of 12%), "Ertelekom "(2,650 thousand, gain of 11%). The MTS company which conceded the third place to Ertelekom shows negative dynamics – the subscriber base of the operator was reduced by eight percent points. At Akado stagnation is observed (the gain made 1%). High rates of a gain of a subscriber base are shown by Orion-Express company — +71%.

In Moscow rating TOP-5 of operators of paid TV heads Rostelecom (3,219 thousand subscribers) with a market share of 60%. The share of Akado (1,016 thousand subscribers) makes 19%. Tricolor TV (568 thousand subscribers) — 11%. VimpelCom (196 thousand subscribers) and NTV Plus (156 thousand subscribers) of 3 and 4%, respectively. The MTS company has another 2%.

Cable TV still remains the most popular technology and the largest segment of the market – more than a half of all subscribers is connected to it. However, despite the continuing construction of networks, the share of cable TV gradually decreases, conceding fast-growing to satellite TV and IPTV. According to the results of the first quarter 2014 it was reduced from 54% to 50%. Let's note that decrease goes rather slowly.

J'son & Partners Consulting estimates a share of cable television at 31.2 billion rubles, satellite television — 18.3 billion rubles, and IPTV — 7.6 billion rubles.

2012

For 2012 the market of IP television grew more intensively, than the market of cable TV: rate of a gain was 62% by 2011 whereas the segment of a CATV grew only by 3%. The market of satellite TV grew almost by 20%, and penetration of paid TV in general at the end of year made 58%.

Results of the annual research of J'son & Partners Consulting company are like that. According to analytical data, the Russian market of paid TV is one of the largest in the world and contains 31.9 million households.

Growth of satellite TV was caused by the low cost of service and also availability and independence of networks of fixed connection. At the same time from 1.8 million subscribers connected by operators of satellite TV in 2012, 1.3 million purchased services of Tricolor TV (a market share – 28%). Other large players of the market are Rostelecom (21%), MTS (9%), ER-Telecom (7%) and Akado (4%).

Growth of IPTV was caused by development of broadband access which penetration reached 48%. Rostelecom, VimpelCom and MTS became leaders in the market of IPTV.

According to data of J'son & Partners, more than a half of a subscriber base it is concentrated in the Volga and Central federal districts. Level of the greatest penetration of paid TV the smallest level – in the North Caucasian and Far East districts (29.4% and 27%) is recorded in the Northwestern Federal District (72.8%).

The share of cable television in Russia is still big – about 58%, however its growth slowed down recently. At the same time the share of IP television is not really considerable (8%), but it develops intensively. This trend is predicted also in the next several years.

The number of the subscribers of JSC Rostelecom using services of IPTV in April, 2012 reached 880 thousand people – a year ago such clients there were only 400 thousand. At the same time for all 2011 subscribers used service "video on demand" (VoD - Video on Demand) 1.5 million times. As a result penetration of service of VoD made more than 17% of subscriber broadband access base of Rostelecom.

On average 10-12% of subscribers of Beeline TV at least once in a month use service "video on demand". At the same time demand for service carries, according to her, pronounced seasonal nature.

In 2011 "video on demand" MTS used service about 30% of a subscriber base of IPTV of MTS. The operator develops this service within the Omlet.ru online project, integrating it into the Set-top boxes and TVs connected to the Internet (already now service is present for 85% of the market of Smart TV). The Omlet.ru video directory contains more than 7 thousand feature films and episodes of series. The audience of the portal makes about 1.5 million unique visitors a month.

According to Rostelecom, in general in Russia more than 1.9 million people use services of Internet television.
