ISO/TR 22100-4:2018 Security of a production equipment – Communication with ISO 12100 is Part 4

International Organization for Standardization in December, 2018 published the standard of security of industrial Internet of Things (IIoT): ISO/TR 22100-4 "Security of a production equipment – Communication with ISO 12100 – Part 4: The guide for equipment manufacturers to consideration of the corresponding aspects of information security (cyber security)". The document is developed by technical committee on standardization of ISO/TC 199.

2018: Development and publication of the standard

On February 11, 2019 there was information that International Organization for Standardization (ISO/ISO) developed the ISO/TR 22100-4:2018 standard "Security of a production equipment — Communication with ISO 12100 — Part 4: The guide for equipment manufacturers to consideration of the corresponding aspects of information security (cyber security)" (ISO/TR 22100-4:2018 Safety of machinery — Relationship with ISO 12100 — Part 4: Guidance to machinery manufacturers for consideration of related IT security (cyber security) aspects). The document was published in December, 2018.

For security of a "smart" production equipment "smart" technologies are required. Smart devices reside under the threat of cyber attacks, and not only Internet of Things (IoT) in general, but also the separate systems. With respect thereto International Organization for Standardization (ISO) developed the standard designed to strengthen the bezopasnostpromyshlenny IoT-equipment.

According to the specialist of ISO Clare Naden, in addition, the list of threats includes deliberate increase in speed of operation of the production smart equipment up to critical level and decrease in temperature of heat treatment of food that can lead to reproduction of pathogenic microorganisms. So cyber attacks to industrial IoT-devices not only are fraught with financial losses because of a forced stop of production, but also can do harm to human health.

As it appears from document title, it supplements already existing standard of security of industrial equipment of ISO 12100 "Security of a production equipment – the Basic principles of design – Assessment and risk reduction".

The offered standard is designed "work aspects of security of the equipment which can be mentioned by the cyber attacks connected with direct or remote access and manipulations with the safety management systems performed with malice aforethought (not to destination)". The standard provides the guide to such key aspects of cybersecurity as enciphering and authentication for these purposes.[1]
