Intracardial nervous system

Though heart first of all is controlled by a brain and the autonomic nervous system, it also has own mini-"brain" called by intracardial nervous system. It controls external vegetative signals and supports a full-fledged work of heart in any situations.

2020: The first-ever 3D model of "brain" of heart is created

At the end of May, 2020 researchers from Thomas Jefferson University for the first time in the world created a 3D model of "brain" of heart.

Intracardial nervous system consists of a number of the neurons distributed in heart. However doctors and researchers long time did not represent their arrangement and functions. To solve these problems, the command applied on a 3D model location of the corresponding neurons in heart of a rat.

We created the first comprehensive model of intracardial nervous system which other researchers studying functions, physiology and interrelations of different neurons as required can address, - the senior author of a research Raj Vadigepalli explained. - The only body for which so detailed 3D model of high resolution is created it is a brain.

The command used raster microscopy for creation of 750,000 images which could be collected in one three-dimensional atlas. Besides, researchers used a laser fascinating mikrodissektion for mapping of separate neurons and determination of an expression of their genes. Then these data were combined with initial model.

The 3D model showed that neurons of intracardial nervous system are located in clusters in an upper part of heart where different veins fall into it. However they can also be found in other places close to a sinoatrialny node. The command also detected sexual differences in structures of neurons that can explain differences in heart diseases between men and women. Later researchers are going to make a 3D model of heart of a pig which on anatomy is closer to human.[1]
