2022: Baikal attendance up 40%

In 2022, more than 360 thousand people visited reserves, national parks and reserves near Lake Baikal, which is 40% more than in 2021. Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko cited such data on March 3, 2023 following a meeting of the government commission on the protection of Lake Baikal in the Irkutsk region. Read more here.

The largest lakes in Russia by area (thousand square km)

The largest mirror area is near the Caspian (390,000 km2), Lake Baikal (31,500 km2), Lake Ladoga (18,300 km2), Lake Onega (9,720 km2) and Lake Taimyr (4,560 km2).

The most salty lake in Russia is Elton (the mineralization of water in the lake in autumn reaches 525 ‰, which is 1.5 times more mineralization of the Dead Sea) in the Volgograd region.

Lake Baikal, Lake Teletskoye and Ubsu-Nur are included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List. In 2008, Lake Baikal was recognized as one of the seven wonders of Russia.
