OPC UA (OPC UA) of TSN

2017: About development of OPC UA through networks sensitive at the right time (TSN)

ABB, Bosch Rexroth, B&R, General Electric, KUKA, National Instruments (NI), Parker Hannifin, Schneider Electric, SEW-EURODRIVE and TTTec announced in May, 2017 joint development of OPC UA through networks sensitive by the time of (TSN, Time-Sensitive Networking) as single solution of communication between industrial controllers and a cloud. It is implemented based on solutions of open standards that devices irrespective of their producer were completely compatible in field conditions.

Still for communication between devices from different producers in industrial automation use different protocols which are often incompatible with each other. Users often become hostages of the proprietary systems. Producers of products are forced to develop at the same time a set of versions for the same product to support different stacks of protocols. Owing to these circumstances the innovation and new concepts of automation are implemented is extremely limited. It means for users that they cannot realize all potential of their automation systems.

ABB, Bosch Rexroth, B&R, General Electric, KUKA, NI, Parker Hannifin, Schneider Electric, SEW-EURODRIVE and TTTech conduct joint work within Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) and OPC Foundation. All partner organizations aim at creation of completely open, uniform and compatible IIoT-solution for communication of real time of Peer-to-Peer. In order that controllers could exchange data not only among themselves, but also with a cloud.

The companies see future standard for industrial automation and IIoT-communication in OPC UA TSN. OPC UA TSN are a combination of the expanded OPC UA protocol using the Publisher \subscriber and EEE TSN Ethernet model of standards. In OPC UA TSN there are all necessary components to integrate communication in a single system for industrial automation. In other words, merging of information technologies (IT) and technology of management is performed (ang. Operational Technology). Thus the key requirement for industrial Internet of Things and the industry 4.0 is fulfilled.

Producers aim at that OPC UA TSN was supported in the next generations of their products. The first prototypes of technology are already integrated in prototypes of IIC. Prototypes will show that OPC UA TSN can provide communication between controllers of different producers through uniform IT infrastructure.

The group is open for accession for all companies separating a general view into the uniform standard of communication not only between controllers but also between controllers and a cloud.
