Passive Optical LANs Passive Optical LAN, POL

In the telecommunication industry passive optical networks which succeed traditional copper solutions of the structured cabling system (SCS) gain popularity. Thanks to profitability, compactness and flexible architecture, the Passive Optical LAN technology is preferable at design and installation of large and average networks in hotels, business centers, hospitals, shopping centers, institutes and the plants.

Distinctive features of technology are:

  • A possibility of removal of objects in a local network on tens of kilometers due to use of a fiber optic cable,
  • Scaling and accumulation of network transmission capacity without restrictions for perspective applications (1G-10G-…). At the same time replacement is required by only the final equipment – OLT (the transceiving module) and ONT (remote subscriber nodes),
  • Flexibility of the design approach of capacity on the port,
  • Simplicity of construction of network – decrease in investment costs,
  • Intellectual system operation – decrease in operating expenses during operation.

This solution allows to build the full-fledged stable and fast corporate network conforming to standards of the industry and protected by a guarantee of 25 years.

Advantages of technology: decrease in energy consumption, smaller costs for installation and service of network, small areas server, necessary for equipment installation. POL (Passive Optical LAN) is adaptation of GPON technology for construction of local networks and guarantees fast payback and low cost of ownership – costs traditional copper are up to 50% less than SCS.

Active equipment is installed only in server and about jobs. Conductors and different devices for their organization and protection are applied to connection: cable, patch cords, sockets, connectors, patch panel, cable channels, etc.

The technology allows to provide provision of services of data transmission, telephony and any type of video based on single-mode optical fiber at distance to 20 km. At the same time use of communication channels of several providers indoors at the same time is possible. Such method of connection is also characterized by the increased safety of connection: the data stream between server and jobs is ciphered at the hardware level.

A special role in case of POL is played by use of modern network equipment, a system functions at the expense of passive splitters, energy is not consumed - a power supply is necessary only for sources and data sinks, at the same time the stable signal is provided. One fiber can be used for connection up to 64 subscribers using a splitter. As the manufacturing company of telecommunication solutions for creation of networks, 3M considers that in the future, exactly POL will be used most actively as it will allow to pass to new speeds and data transmission technologies without evolution of a cable network and to increase lives, having lowered maintenance overheads.
