2023: Sharp growth of the market to 65-70 billion rubles

At the end of 2023, the volume of the Russian pawnshop market amounted to 65-70 billion rubles, while a year earlier this figure was estimated at 43.1 billion rubles. At the same time, there is an expansion in the range of product categories that are pledged. This is evidenced by the statistics of the National Association of Pawnshops (NOL), published at the end of February 2024.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, as of the end of 2023, approximately 85% of collateral falls on traditional gold for the industry, mainly in the form of jewelry. However, by 2026-2028, this figure, according to experts, may be reduced to 65-70%. This is due to the tightening of regulation of the industry and a decrease in its profitability. Other types of collateral are gaining popularity - equipment, cars, wardrobe items and even intangible assets. About 27% of pawnshop market participants intend to expand the types of collateral - this is five times more than in 2022.

The transfer of a pawnshop as a pledge of a crypt without the purpose of its further redemption may well in the future turn pawnshops into crypto exchanges and even crypto exchanges, - said Ilya Zharsky, managing partner of the Veta Expert Group.

The automotive segment remains a small niche by the end of 2023, the study said. This is explained by the fact that the main part of it was taken over by microfinance organizations issuing loans secured by the TCP. Experts emphasize that non-juvenile pledges require pawnshops to restructure an established model of activity, great competencies from appraisers and put the industry, in fact, in the face of competition with the gray market, commissions and buying points. At the same time, there is a tendency in Russia to enlarge and reduce the number of participants in the pawnshop industry.[1]

Of these, only 2,385 companies have revenue, in total for 2018 it amounted to 28.438 billion rubles, which is 4.4% (1.306 billion rubles) less than a year earlier.

In the ranking, six of the twelve companies have been active for more than 10 years. The teams United Pawnshop and Capital Pawnshop left the first dozen, replaced by Lombard Crimea Capital. Seven companies retained their position, three companies made a step up/down, the sequence of leaders for 4 years of our research is generally stable, in terms of share distribution, the pawnshop market is quite stable.

For eight companies from the list, revenue decreased compared to 2018, only four showed growth, the maximum - "Lombard Crimea Capital" from + 25% by 2018.

A year ago, the trends were opposite, then the revenue of 8 companies increased, and three of them significantly, by more than 40%. For December 2019, we see, rather, anti-records: Lombards "Blago Credit" and "Meridian" sank by more than 20%.

In 2018, only 685 companies received a loss totaling 0.96 billion rubles, almost a billion less than in 2017. Profit was received by 1936 companies in the amount of 3.530 billion rubles, which is 0.57 billion rubles (14%) less than a year earlier. Thus, the industry's net profit has been falling for several years in a row.

Current assets at the end of the year almost did not change and amounted to 50.364 billion rubles, there is no growth. Financial investments also decreased slightly, to 24.4 billion rubles. Both of these indicators indicate the stagnation of the portfolio and the general slowdown in the issuance of loans secured by movable property by pawnshops[2].
