Services and products in BPM to practice

There are many opinions on what is "product" and that "it service" as they correspond with each other and as they correspond to the concept "process".

There are two types of "accounting":

  • The accounting as our own division (or as the service bought by us) meaning accounting - collecting, registration, synthesis of information and economic transactions of our organization. Accounting (our own) is a functional division. The processes closed in (our) accounting are not end-to-end, and it just the fact that we call workflow.
  • Accounting - as business - service sale. For the enterprises rendering such services is a production. So the fact that it makes is not UCHETOM from the point of view of the manufacturing organization. This product which is called "accounting". And "the concepts "accounting" and "business processes" are not compatible" - it belongs to the first type.

Product it is impossible to call valid "accounting" - I just wanted to specify it. That the confusion just also arises because business which consists in provision of services of accounting is considered accounting too.

There is other example:

Core activity of one consulting company are projects. Due to their carrying out, this company sells the products. At the same time, this company, for the organization of the activity uses the process approach … …

These two examples show that processes are used also for production of a commercial product and for the organization of internal activity in the companies using different cultures / approaches to management.

Vision of a question

For leading under this approval of methodological base it is offered to use intersection two the practician: BPM and ITSM. And it is offered to begin their use with the analysis of ITSM of approaches.

This example is good the fact that it can be scaled easily from the company the size in one stall to the company of the state scale.

The main value of this example consists in very bright example of the fact that the company to provide release of an end commercial product, both purchases services from out of, and makes them inside. At the same time internal service can differ from a commercial product not qualitatively, and is conditional – the same entity (in an example are ready sandwiches) can act also in that, and other role. All question comes down to in what price list (the directory of services) it will appear – i.e. in what wrapper.

For BPM the practician, this example is interesting by two features. The first is that it is not necessary to prove that activities for production of sandwiches do not depend on candy wrappers into which they are packed (internal or external service). And the second – that this activity can be formalized through processes.

It is necessary to learn whether as a result of one process services/products (these sandwiches) are issued?

Actually this material is devoted to the solution of this question.

If at a research of the given example to accept assumption, that this "stall-avtobusik" is Buterburgis LLC, then in this company there are, at least, not only such types of activity as purchases, warehousing, production, sale, but also accounting and tax accounting and also logistics. If we increase the scale of the company, then also the quantity of different types of activity will increase – for example, can appear such as, marketing, construction of marketplaces, etc.

The answer to the question posed – NET unambiguously follows from the given example, in my opinion. Creation of an end product requires many processes, and not just there are a lot of processes, and it is a lot of groups of the processes implementing all necessary types of activity. At the same time a part of groups of processes/types of activity will be directed to release of the internal services necessary for release of an end, commercial product. And we have no right to call all set of these types of activity process "production of sandwiches". But we have the right to claim that such process is simply obliged to be present at a type of activity Production and that sandwich which still need to be sold will be result of this process.

In the offered material, it was not discussed whether it is necessary to formalize and to what degree processes and types of activity of Buterburgis LLC, it is not discussed and that what culture of management in it should be – process, functional or mandative and master's. In it the attempt to show the place of process in architecture of the company in relation to the made product/service was made.

Now, it is possible to offer that the same type of activity should be created on the basis of a similar set of the processes and ideally specialized methodologies, containing descriptions of these processes. At the same time the set of these processes is not process – it is an entity with other nature.

Now it is possible to offer that set of processes – this such entity which is created as the independent block of the company providing release of the internal services relating to one type of activity. At the same time each process in such block should make one internal service / the intermediate result necessary for release of a commercial product. In this case process the chain of the added quality (VAD) and a recurrence / ekzemplyarnost does not lose the fundamental properties.

Such approach gives the chance to estimate the same entity, for example a type of activity Accounting, in its different forms. Really, such entity can be used for solving of tasks as providing, and primary activity of the company. In the first case, it will be necessary to us as the producer of the internal services providing the main production, and in the second, will be this main production. At the same time the structure of its processes will not change, and the same services, only in - the second case will be result, these services will be already commercial product, and activities for their release will demand for itself internal services (including accounting).

Such approach explains, for example, as in the company selling the products due to carrying out the project the formalized processes can be used: in such company the type of activity project management will be formalized. But the processes which are a part of this type of activity will be managing, but not the main and they will consist not of one process "project management" (initiation, carrying out, end …), and of a set of processes which part are such as resource management, risk management, etc. – everyone with the clear discrete result / service which is necessary for sale of a commercial product, but to them not being. And also, in such company, there will be processes providing creation of a specific commercial product and they will consist of the processes directed to creation of separate components of future product / product. And such processes perhaps, it is necessary and it is necessary, to build in a chain of the added quality (added value). And such processes I will make the main production.

Now, it is possible to offer that within architecture of the company three different hierarchical levels are selected, each of which consists of the entities having the different nature and the importance for business:

  • Macro-level – integrates the entities intended for management of business objects or implementing separate types of activity.
  • · The basic level - integrates the entities intended for creation of internal services (results) – actually processes.
  • Micro level - integrates the entities intended for process detailing.

At basic level each process is a chain of the added quality and as a result of its execution internal service which is necessary for release of a commercial product is made. Such services are made so much - how many it is necessary, for ensuring release of one unit of a commercial product. Only a part of such processes will be connected with the main production, and within their execution components of future product / product will be made. All other processes, will deliver or providing, or managing services.

At the macro-level there are entities of higher order constructed of processes. At the same time only in one entity corresponding to the main production processes which provide direct creation of a commercial product will be collected. If the commercial product is a multicomponent/compound object – processes of the main production will also represent a chain of added value and to have property of a recurrence / ekzemplyarnost, and the entity integrating these processes will be inherently similar to an entity of basic level – process, but it not to be.

For example, follows from the same approach that the term E2E process is not related to entities of macro-level basic level. E2E process – not a synonym to the entities having properties of a chain of the added quality. It is only the way laid through different processes or the way laid at more detailed levels of process (for example, procedural or operational). I.e. E2E process has no importance, within it are not made internal not commercial products of service – it is the analytical plane which is carried out through process model of the company, and such planes there can be an unlimited number.

We not in the right to claim that only macro-level entities the processes having the nature of chains of the added quality or only E2E are interesting to business. Rules of creation and management of entities of all levels are interesting to different levels of management of the company –. For creation of full process model of the company and its to the subsequent, productive uses are necessary as an entity of micro level – corresponding to separate transactions, and a macro-level entity – the companies corresponding to separate blocks.
