2019: Who is in the lead in the market of antiviruses

In the middle of November, 2019 the OPSWAT company specializing in technologies of information security published the rating of the largest producers of anti-virus software for Windows.

The Symantec company from shares in the amount of 13.56% is called the leader of this market. In leading the three also Eset companies (12.84%) and McAfee (12.21%) entered. Kaspersky Lab was at the fifth place with result in 7.66%.

The rating of the largest producers of anti-virus software for Windows

Judging by promulgated data, the market of antiviruses is characterized by high extent of consolidation at which in it there is no pronounced leader with a big separation from competitors. It is possible to see such picture in all cybersecurity industry where at many niche markets (for example, firewalls, VPN services, e-mail gateways) there is an extensive leading group in which there is no absolutely dominating player, notes the ZDNet portal.

The high level of fragmentation is a good indicator as the various ecosystem of producers is an obvious sign of healthy and competitive market.

According to experts, one more sign of the healthy market is the fact that he never does not stand still. For many years the ecosystem of tools for protection against malware of Windows constantly changed. Leaders changed: shares of the companies strongly fell, significantly grew. To that confirmation is take-off and falling of Avast for a four-year interval of time.

At the beginning of 2014 specialists of OPSWAT counted at Avast a 13.2 percent share in global market of antiviruses that was notable more, than at the closest persecutors. Two years later the share of the company rose up to 15%, and through the same period — up to 20.48% that was promoted in many respects by acquisition of AVG.

The ecosystem of tools for protection against malware of Windows constantly changes

However afterwards for the unknown reasons of Avast began to hand over positions. 17.42% of the market of antivirus software were come to the end of 2018 on the company, and in October of the 2019th the indicator fell lower than 7%, and the company appeared on the sixth place in the list. For 2019 the leader in the market changed three times: at first McAfee, then — Eset, then — Symantec became it.

The research OPSWAT also shows that in the anti-virus market still there is a place for innovations and new products. The example is Cylance company which became the beginner in rating and at once took the seventh place with almost 6 percent share. The breakthrough of Cylance is explained with creation of solutions using artificial intelligence and predictive analytics.

Experts of OPSWAT collect information more than from 30 thousand corporate and home computers on which antiviruses are set. The report does not join Defender of Windows as it is set by default practically on all modern Windows systems.

OPSWAT note that the report of the company should not be used for determination of that, "what producers of means of protecting from malware are the best or for comparison of these suppliers in terms of quality or performance". Experts recommend to apply these data only in the fact-finding purposes.

2015: Data of Gartner

On July 14, 2016 analysts of Gartner published short results of a research of the world market of software products for information security support (cybersecurity). The largest producer of these solutions Symantec endures recession three years.

According to Gartner estimates, in 2015 sales of cybersecurity software on a global scale reached $22.1 billion, having increased by 3.7% in comparison with the 2014th.

Platforms for information management and events in a security system (Security Information and Event Management) which implementation rose by 15.8% remain the most fast-growing segment. The sector of consumer solutions was reduced by 5.9%.

In 2015 the five of the largest software makers for data protection (Symantec, Intel, IBM, Trend Micro, EMC) occupied 37.6% of the world market that on 3.1 percent points it is less, than the previous year. The specified companies in the amount reduced sales by 4.2% while other vendors (in the table are stated in the column "Other" above) increased consolidated revenues by 9.2%.

The leaders having difficult product portfolios show indicators below market, that time as business of less large specialized players grows and presses on larger competitors, the senior analyst of Gartner Sid Deshpande notes.

Symantec remains the largest software maker for information security, however in 2015 revenue of the company from sales of these products fell for the third time in succession. Besides, recession in 6.2% was the strongest for a three-year time frame. The market share of Symantec steadily decreases since 2011.

About three quarters of revenues of Symantec in the market arrive from platforms for protection of end devices (Endpoint Protection Platforms, EPP), however their sales in 2015 dropped by 7%, as became the main reason of regress of the American vendor.

More detailed alignment of forces among cybersecurity producers of software at the end of 2015 is given in the table above.[1]

2014

In the spring of 2015 of Gartner published the report in which it is specified that in 2014 the world market of means of information security grew by 5%. Analysts note that growth was more noticeable, than in 2013. The sales volume of software tools of information security in 2014 reached $21.4 billion. It is noted that in a segment of programs of consumer level there was a recession. At the same time the segment of platforms of protection of end devices practically did not grow.

Such dynamics of these segments of which 39% of the market in total are the share was compensated by steady growth of segments of information management systems and events in the field of security (Security Information and Event Management,SIEM), safe web gateways (Secure Web Gateway, SWG), management systems for identities (Identity Governance and Administration, IGA) and corporate content and dependent assets of data loss prevention (Data Leak Prevention, DLP).

So, the segment of SIEM grew by 11% and reached $1.6 billion, and a segment of DLP — for 15.8% ($643 million). This rise happened in many respects thanks to Symantec under which control about a half of income in a segment. At the same time total revenue of the American company in the cybersecurity industry dropped by 1.3% (to $3.69 billion), and this recession in annual terms was the second in a row.

Connect by the main reason of drop in sales of Symantec of analytics with the sector of consumer cybersecurity software which volume in 2014 was reduced by 6.2%. These products create about 53% of revenue of Symantec in the considered market.

In 2014 sales of cybersecurity software grew by 5.3%

In 2014 sales of cybersecurity software grew by 5.3%

Despite all difficulties of Symantec finished 2014 in the status of the leader, having written in an asset 17.2% of sales of software in the field of information security. The share of the following Intel made 8.5%, and revenue — $1.8 billion, having increased by 4.6% year on year. The gain could be higher if not easing of demand for consumer products and platforms for protection of end devices — they generate Intel about 75% of revenue in the market.

The greatest growth rates were shown by IBM whose sales of software cybersecurity tools in 2014 increased by 17%, and a market share — up to 6.9%. Top five also included Trend Micro companies (4.9%) and EMC (3.7%).[2]

Microsoft and Avast leaders in number of installations of antiviruses

According to a research of OPSWAT company (February, 2014), Avast the Antivirus takes the second place in the market of protective software for the PC from shares of 15.9%. The first place in this rating belongs to Microsoft from shares of 23%, the third - AVG (9%), the fourth - Eset (8.1%), the fifth - Symantec (8%).

The feature of the research OPSWAT consists that analysts read out not sales of protective programs, and the PC from the included protection in real time. Therefore in it free solutions of Microsoft, Avast and AVG are in the lead.

Revenue of LK in the market of cybersecurity solutions for SMB dropped by 4%

On March 19, 2015 the Canalys research company told about how the situation in the market of information security tools for small and medium business is. Sales of solutions grow, however same Kaspersky Lab at which recession of revenue was the greatest among the leading vendors cannot brag.[3]

According to the estimates of Canalys for 2014, universal expenses of the small companies on such solutions of the information security (IS) which provide enciphering of IT systems and protect from viruses, date leaks and cracking of corporate services of message exchange, made $2.6 billion that is 9.6% more, than the previous year. The share of this segment in all size of the market of solutions for protection of corporate content for this period increased up to 28% from 27%.

"Though small business increases purchases of cybersecurity solutions, the overall level of protection of the companies remains below effective level — the senior analyst of Canalys Nushin Vaiani says. — Some small organizations are still convinced that objects for cyberthreats are only large corporations about which it is heard in news reports. This delusion, and if these companies do not change the positions in the nearest future, they will become the victims of attacks".

According to the expert, representatives of SMB need to realize effects of hacker cracking for the reputation, income and clients. Reliable IT protection should become a priority for all companies, Vayani said.

Trend Micro which in 2014 earned about $413 million from these products that corresponds to 16% in a total amount of the considered market remains the largest producer of information security tools in a segment of small and medium business.

Symantec remained at the second position, however did not show sales growth. It allowed Intel Security which recorded 2 percent rise, to come very close to Symantec. Each of these companies finished 2014 with a share indicator in 14%.

The greatest losses among leaders were suffered by Kaspersky Lab. If in 2013 the company significantly increased sales of cybersecurity solutions for the small enterprises and organizations, then in 2014 faced recession in the amount of 4.2% (to $117 million). It turned out to be consequence of the increased discounting of final solutions for customer acquisition and maintenance of positions of the company in the market. Besides, the difficult economic situation in Russia which can complicate growth of Kaspersky Lab in 2015 affected, the staff of Canalys assumes.

2012: The market of cybersecurity software reached $19.2 billion

The volume of the world market of information security systems (cybersecurity) in 2012 reached $19.2 billion that is 7.9% more in comparison with 2011 when it equaled $17.7 billion, said in the report[4] for May, 2013. Experts of research company then considered that growth of expenses on the cybersecurity systems new paradigms of IT market, such, for example, as bring your own device (BYOD) is growth of penetration of personal portable devices in corporate environment manage.

In 2012 analysts noted steady growth on information security systems both user, and the enterprise level. Among regions of the world growth of the market of cybersecurity of systems was not uniform: some countries managed to achieve two-digit growth. For example, in Western Europe because of difficult economic circumstances of a situation in the market of cybersecurity was quite depressive.

Gartner, 2013

Among vendors in 2012 on revenue in the world market of cybersecurity of systems the Symantec company was in the lead though growth of its business was only 2.6% - to $3.75 billion. On the second place on the volume of revenues of McAfee: the company showed in comparison with 2011 a business gain for 37% to $1.7 billion. Partly it was connected with organic growth, partly with the transaction on purchase of the company by Intel corporation.

In the market in 2012 the Trend Micro company which showed negative dynamics got the third place: its income was reduced by 2.7% to $1.17 billion.

Also the five of the largest vendors in 2012 included IBM ($953.6 million) and EMC ($717.6 million).

Gartner noted that use of information security systems remains a key priority for the companies of medium and small business. And gain of demand on average a segment of the market represents a call for software suppliers as the needs for data protection at the medium-sized and large companies seriously differ.

Many companies of a segment of medium and small business regarded SaaS services of information security as a worthy alternative to traditional models of purchase of software, especially in the fields of protection of e-mail and web security. Analysts considered that it will lead to gain of price competition in this segment of the market and also to purchases of cloud players by larger vendors.

Expenses on cybersecurity software also increased owing to emergence of new threats. For example, in process of increase in use of mobile technologies business the corresponding problems and need of protection of corporate data for the mobile environment appear. Also growth of penetration of solutions of virtualization stimulates demand for solutions for protection of virtual environments.

According to Gartner for 2012, on total revenue in the world market of antiviruses Symantec from shares of 19.6%, McAfee - 8.8%, Trend Micro - 6.1% is in the lead).

2011

Gartner

According to Gartner, the volume of global market of software for ensuring IT security in 2011 increased by 7.5% and reached $17.7 billion. The main premises for growth became steady demand from representatives of small and medium business, increase in quantity and refinement of threats, need of reduction of the IC of the companies in compliance with security policies.

According to Ruggero Comte (Ruggero Contu), directors of research of Gartner, growth of the market in 2011 is a direct consequence of demand for security protections in a corporate segment and from ordinary consumers. Despite the general trend of growth, some regions did not manage to show increases in sales volumes at the level of two-digit indicators by an example of Asia, the Pacific Ocean and Eurasia. Unlike mature markets of economy of many developing countries endure rise, naturally implementation of many projects goes from scratch. It is possible to give extremely sluggish indicators of Western Europe provoked by uncertainty of an economic situation as the return example.

The market of software of security showed stability even despite limited IT budgets. And if a part of revenues of McAfee did not go to offset of Intel, the market could show growth even at the level of two-digit indicators. Let's remind, on February 28, 2011 Intel absorbed McAfee, and by accounting rules in that case Intel is obliged to write off about 30% of $1.4 billion the postponed revenues of McAfee on account of own income. For this reason formally revenues of the developer of solutions on IT security in 2011 considerably decreased.

The leading position in corporate and consumer segments occupies Symantec, the sales volume of the company grew by 17% and reached $3.7 billion Symantec in every possible way aims to be beyond traditional products of security of endpoints. In a portfolio of North American vendor there are solutions of backup and data recovery, prevention of leaks (DLP – Data Loss Prevention), enciphering of information.

CEMA region

The market of applications of information security in the region of Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and CEMA showed healthy two-digit growth by 22.5% in 2011 and reached $532.9 million, according to IDC. The main driver of the market, analysts believed, there was an increase in demand for applications for ensuring network security.

In CEMA region in 2011 the profit of producers in a segment of solutions for network security increased by 24.8%, the systems of the class unified threat management (UTM) were most popular at the same time. End users gave then preference to platforms "all in one", such solutions are easily unrolled and mean low operating costs. In general the situation in the market of cybersecurity of software in the region of CEMA remained "optimistic", according to IDC. The forecast for the market in the short term positive.

2010

The volume of the world market of software for data protection in 2010 grew by 12% to $16.5 billion - it marked recovery of the industry after deceleration of growth rates in crisis 2009 that turned out to be consequence of universal reduction of IT budgets, reported in Gartner.

Analysts noted several top trends in the market of software for data protection. First, this sphere continued to show fast rates of technology development. Secondly, even more often data protection is offered in the form of cloud services - mainly such model is preached by young firms. Thirdly, the main players of the market whom Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro and other companies are among continued expansion to the developing regions, including by absorption.

Experts also pointed to a considerable difference in growth rates of different segments of the market. So, solutions for protection of workstations and file servers and access control in the Internet showed lower growth rate (within unambiguous values) while solutions for data management and events and the organizations of network gateways - within two-place values of growth.

Besides, analysts emphasized a considerable difference in indicators of growth of vendors. In Top-5 only EMC showed the growth rate exceeding an average market indicator and at once twice. Leadership remained for Symantec. The company increased sales slightly - for only 5.8% having occupied at the end of year 18.9% of the market in terms of money.

By the way, all companies of the first five - American, except for the Japanese Trend Micro. Also we will note that the second in value player of the market, McAfee, in March, 2011 for $7.7 billion was purchased by Intel corporation. Security technologies of McAfee are going to be used directly in the hardware released by Intel. Together with Symantec the company controlled nearly 30% of the world market of software for information security.

Analysts of Gartner did not report market shares of Kaspersky Lab (revenue in 2010 made $538 million) and Eset, but these two companies included in category of vendors, the narrow directions of protection, specializing on profitable to themselves, for example, to protection of the user PCs. In addition to this category, according to Gartner classification, existed three more: the companies which occupy a considerable part of both corporate, and consumer segments (Symantec, McAfee); the companies which are releasing broader spectrums of products (for example, IBM, EMC and CA Technologies), and the companies which portfolio includes a minimum of solutions, the covering no more than one or two directions.

2010

World proceeds from sales of the software in information security field in 2010 will grow to $16.5 billion that will be 11.3% more in the comparison with value of 2009 equal to $14.8 billion, Gartner reported.

The greatest part of revenue belongs to consumer segment of the market. It was expected that in 2010 $4.2 billion against $3.9 billion in 2009 will fall to its lot. The second in value segment is corporate: according to the forecast of Gartner, 2010 for it $3 billion from all revenue is necessary, for $100 million it is more in comparison with 2009.

According to analysts, protective software in the next several years will continue to be one of the most fast-growing types of software solutions in a corporate segment. Besides that products for authorization and access control which then occupied 8% of the market in terms of money in 2014 will bring more than $12 billion.

2009

Market size - $14.8 billion (Gartner). In 2009 under the influence of world crisis market expansion in terms of money slowed down: growth was 7% in comparison year-on-year.

  • Retail segment - $3.9 billion.
  • Segment of final corporate systems (endpoint protection, the PC, file servers) - $2.9 billion.

At the end of 2009, according to Gartner, top five of the market was created by Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, IBM and EMC.
