In November, 2020 Gartner released a magic quadrant (research) in the field of the software for archiving of corporate data (Enterprise Information Archiving, EIA). Leaders of this market analysts called the companies: Microsoft, ZL Tech, Global Relay, Proofpoint, and Mimecast.

According to researchers, products of leaders of a quadrant are the most multifunction and scalable. Besides, the leading companies have stable financial performance and a steady position in the market. These are the companies with accurately formulated plans for production of the wide range simple in use and easily scalable products.

Besides, the vendors participating in a research make own tools for migration to help the clients to pass quicker to new platforms for archiving of data, without relying on participation of the third parties.

Speaking about Microsoft, experts noted that in recent years the corporation considerably increased investments into creation of risk management solutions and tools for observance of regulatory requirements and also for archiving and information management both within Microsoft 365 ecosystem, and beyond its limits. All these tools help the organizations to function in the conditions of constantly growing amount of data and the changing requirements of the regulators concerning management of this information. Microsoft was among leaders of EIA-solutions in 2018 and 2019.

At the same time analysts noted a number of shortcomings of products of Microsoft. One of them is connected with the fact that the company offers clients a set of options when choosing applications and pricings that can potentially lead to confusion and unnecessary expenses. Besides, researchers pointed to difficulties at transfer of the competing archives in Microsoft 365.[1]

According to analysts of IDC company, the general capacity of data warehouses in the world from 2012 to 2017 will increase since 2596 to the 7235th exabyte.

First quarter

The world market software for data storage in the first quarter grew 2012 in annual terms by 3.3% to $3.5 billion, according to[2] IDC. While in the market demand on SOFTWARE for data storage remained healthy, indicators of growth of the market fell to so low level which was fixed by analysts the last time in crisis 2009.

The largest system providers of data storage as of the first quarter 2012 were EMC, IBM and Symantec whose market shares made 24%, 15.7% and 14.8% respectively. CommVault and IBM at the same time showed the maximum organic gain in a year – 26.2% and 18.4% respectively. Acquisition of HP of Autonomy company allowed the last to show, however, higher gain – for 72.6% in annual terms.

Among market subsegments in the first quarter 2012 the maximum gain was shown by segments of protection and data recovery and also software for archiving (rates of a gain in a year – 5.5% and 5%) respectively. The volume of these segments was $1.25 billion and $411 billion respectively.

The companies with total number more than 1000 staff were the most active consumers of software of data storage: in a quarter they spent $1.6 billion for such systems. However growth in this segment in a year was small – only 0.4% as well the public sector and the sector of education in a year increased costs on this item of expenditure only by 1.2%. In a segment of SMB (medium and small business) of sale of suppliers increased most of all - by 8.8% in comparison with the first quarter 2011.

Third quarter

World income from implementation of the software of storage systems in the third quarter reached 2011 $3.5 billion, growth was 9.7% in comparison with the same period of 2010. According to researches of the market of IDC company, this quarter – the second in value income gained by market participants within nine years.

In six of seven functional markets covered by a research of IDC company - Worldwide Storage Software Qview, observes revenue growth in comparison with the same period of last year. Four markets within this quarter showed growth in two-digit digits.

The software of archiving of data and software of management of storages and devices felt the strongest enthusiasm of demand in comparison with the same period of 2010, in 12.2% and 11.3%, respectively. Revenue from software of protection and data recovery made 34.9% of total amount in the third quarter 2011 and again made the greatest contribution to an additional income in comparison with the third quarter of last year.

EMC, Symantec and IBM headed the rating of software providers of storage systems with market shares of 24.5%, 15.3% and 14.0% respectively. All software suppliers of storage systems who entered the QView overview received a gain of income in comparison with the same period of last year. The most powerful growth of profitability in the third quarter 2011, in comparison with the same period of last year, fixed HP - to 38.2%, generally due to acquisition of company 3PAR.

According to Eric Sheppard (Eric Sheppard), the director of research of the software of storages of IDC company, demand for software products of storage systems remains near all historic highs. "The market left a recent phase of updating of products, but sales continue to grow at impressive rates as users and suppliers integrate with the purpose of improvement of opportunities of use of software by the companies, managements and protection of the most valuable corporate data and resources of storages", - the analyst emphasized.
