Getting on the US sanctions list

On November 24, 2021, the US Department of Commerce added the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) to the sanctions list. The department explained its decision by the fact that the university allegedly develops military products for a certain customer from the defense industry.

Being on this list means that American suppliers will need to receive special licenses if they want to sell some technologies and equipment at MIPT.

MIPT is on the US sanctions list

In addition to MIPT, sanctions were imposed on 16 organizations and individuals because Pakistan China of their participation in the development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. The new sanctions list included people and organizations that, according to the ministry, participate in "activities contrary to the interests of national security or foreign policy" - USA a total of 27 points.

The decision is designed to "stop the leakage of American technology" for the military progress of the PRC and Russia and activities related to Pakistan's nuclear program, said US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.

MIPT rector Dmitry Livanov, in a conversation with RBC, expressed surprise at the inclusion of the university in the sanctions list. He noted that among the customers of research and applied developments of MIPT are many commercial and state structures in Russia and abroad. Livanov expressed the hope that the sanctions "will not affect the close academic collaborations with American universities and scientific institutions."

The university department has a master's degree from Tinkoff Bank (more than 150 MIPT graduates work in a credit institution) and a VTB laboratory, and a MTS Bank course is available. MIPT graduated from the founder of the digital bank Revolut Nikolai Storonsky.

According to Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov, by imposing sanctions against MIPT, Washington continued to destroy ties in areas that have nothing to do with politics.[3]

Study of properties of hexaferrites

Scientists from MIPT have studied the properties of one of the materials for the production of magnets. It turned out that this material can be used in the latest generation of electronics - terahertz devices. The work was published in the group's journal Nature - NPG Asia Materials. The institute announced this on October 11, 2021.

Terahertz technologies have not yet entered our daily life tightly, but due to their rapid development, this day is clearly not far off. Many of us, without knowing it, have already come into contact with terahertz devices, for example, passing to land at the airport through a scanner for inspection. This is just one of many examples of terahertz instruments. The field of their application captures medicine, telecommunications, information security and many other areas.

Despite the unusual name, in fact, hexaferrites are well known to any person who held in his hands, bank card a key card from a hotel room or a tape cassette. All these things are united by one thing - the magnetic strips in them are made of hexaferrite. Externally, nondescript black and brown matter, as it turned out, is a very attractive magnetic material. And the fact that hexaferrites are also quite cheap to produce, since they are obtained from waste metallurgy and, mechanical engineering allowed them to turn around at full power in the magnetic market and occupy a good third of it with an annual turnover of billions. dollars However, the magnetic properties that glorified hexaferrite made us undeservedly forget about its other qualities. Historically, the scientific study of hexaferrites went quite one-sidedly: scientists slightly changed the chemical formula and watched how this would affect magnetic characteristics. The rest of the studies, if carried out, with much less enthusiasm.

Scientists from MIPT, in collaboration with Russian and foreign colleagues, first investigated the potential of hexaferrite for terahertz technologies. One of the desired characteristics of the material in instrumentation is tunability, that is, the ability to purposefully change the properties of the substance. For example, by changing the temperature, control the transparency of the material, etc. It was the tunability of hexaferrites that caused the delight of the researchers. Lyudmila Alyabyeva and colleagues investigated barium-lead hexaferrite. It turned out that if lead is added to barium hexaferrite, this will significantly change its terahertz response, that is, the nature of interaction with terahertz radiation. By studying how the amount of lead added to hexaferrite affects the ability to absorb terahertz, the scientists found that at a certain concentration of lead, the response changes in a sudden and unexpected way. An absorption band appears in it, which can be moved in frequency. To shift such a strip, you just need to cool the material - and hexaferrite will become easily tunable. In principle, the very phenomenon of such moving absorption bands is known in solid state physics and is called "soft modes." However, the soft mode found in hexaferrite asked scientists two riddles at once: firstly, its appearance itself was a complete surprise, and secondly, its behavior when the temperature drops differs from that prescribed by standard theory. In her work, Lyudmila Alyabyeva and co-authors offer an explanation for both phenomena - both the unexpected appearance of soft fashion and its unusual behavior.

File:Aquote1.png
In addition to the obvious practical significance, the study has a purely fundamental interest: we first observed soft fashion with such exotic temperature behavior. For October 2021, we are actively working to find out what physical processes underlie its nature, - said Boris Gorshunov, d. F.-m. n, head of the terahertz spectroscopy laboratory of the Center for Photonics and Two-Dimensional Materials of MIPT.
File:Aquote2.png

File:Aquote1.png
Of course, it was not without problems: for a thorough study of the properties of hexaferrite, we needed large enough crystals, while all the well-developed technologies in the world work to obtain small crystals or powders. However, this problem is gradually being overcome. For example, crystals of special size and quality for this work were grown by our colleagues, the group of Professor Denis Vinnik in Chelyabinsk, - added Lyudmila Alyabyeva, Ph.D. n., Senior Researcher, Laboratory of Terahertz Spectroscopy, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and the first author of the work.
File:Aquote2.png

In addition to the employees of the terahertz spectroscopy laboratory of the Center for Photonics and 2D Materials of the Moscow Institute of Physics, their colleagues from the Institute of General Physics named after A. M. Prokhorov RAS, South Ural State University, Southern Federal University, Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Charles University (Czech Republic), Stuttgart and Augsburg Universities (Germany), as well as the Institute of Automation and Electrometry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy Academy.

MIPT students recognized as the best in the world in AI systems for Minecraft

Employees of the MIPT Cognitive Dynamic Systems Laboratory became the winners of the MineRL competition. The MIPT announced this to TAdviser on December 16, 2019. They proposed an unknown method of training with demonstration-based reinforcement, with which you can quickly and efficiently solve hierarchical problems in the Minecraft environment: resource search and tool creation. It will be possible to use the developed algorithms when creating autonomous mobile robots and robotic manipulators. The competition was held as part of the international conference on neural network technologies Neural Information Processing Systems-2019.

Reinforcement training is one of the promising methods of artificial intelligence that demonstrates success in gaming and robotic tasks, but requires a large amount of computing resources and training time. Employees and trainees of the MIPT Cognitive Dynamic Systems Laboratory and the Institute of Artificial Intelligence Problems of the Federal Research Center of the IU RAS - Alexey Skrynnik, Ermek Aitygulov, Alexey Staroverov, Kirill Aksenov, Vasily Davydov and Alexander Panov - proposed an approach using the mechanism of forgetting incorrect expert demonstrations to solve the problem.

The laboratory team achieved an excellent result by adequately representing Fiztech and Russia at an international conference. Minecraft's gaming environment, in which we were able to demonstrate the intelligent behavior of an agent, implements a wide variety of different types of human interaction with a complex, unpredictable external environment. In this regard, it is an excellent simulator close to reality, and it is much more difficult for it to develop behavior training methods than for environments such as Go, Dota or Starcraft. Our proposed method opens up various ways to apply reinforcement training already in applied tasks, such as unmanned vehicles and robotic manipulators,
said the head of the laboratory of cognitive dynamic systems of the Center for Cognitive Modeling Alexander Panov

The competition lasted five months, with a total of two rounds. In the first, the Fiztech team took third place, in the second - bypassed nine finalists and took first place by a significant margin. More than 40 teams from around the world participated in the competition.

MineRL is a competition for intelligent algorithms rather than computational capabilities. Prior to this, many worthy results in the field of artificial intelligence were achieved due to "brute force" - a large number of GPUs and CPUs for training complex systems. As soon as the need to develop computational-efficient methods was added to the requirements, the chances of all teams were equalized. In such conditions, our guys turned out to be the best, ahead of teams from the USA, China, Japan, Finland, Germany and other countries. This once again confirms that Fiztech in general and FPMI in particular are world leaders in the field of artificial intelligence. And this is actually natural, because a good system of interaction between academic base organizations and industrial partners has been built at the Fiztech School. In this case, I would note the extremely successful docking of the ISA RAS and Aimtekha at the FPMI site,
added director of the Fiztech School of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science Andrei Raigorodsky

The competition was organized by Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University, the organizing and program committees included Katya Hofmann (Microsoft Research), Ruslan Salakhutdinov (Carnegie Mellon University), Sergey Levin (UC Berkeley) and Chelsea Finn (Google Brain and UC Berkeley).

Physicists of the Russian Academy of Sciences and MIPT have determined the type of quasiparticles in semiconductor carbon nanotubes

On December 5, 2019, the MIPT reported that scientists from the Institute of General Physics. A. M. Prokhorov RAS and MIPT together with colleagues investigated the influence of "traps" on the optical properties of carbon nanotubes. When treated with hydrochloric acid, individual hydrogen atoms remain on the surface of the tubes. They do not form chemical bonds with the surface, and, therefore, do not introduce defects into the structure of the nanotube. These atoms serve as "traps" - a quasi-particle that falls into their zone of influence cannot "escape" (becomes localized). Based on the data obtained by spectroscopy methods, physicists came to the conclusion that an exciton (consisting of an electron and a "hole") and a trion (exciton, which was joined by another hole or electron) fell into the "trap."
