2017: Creation

In June, 2017 it was announced creation of project 5GCAR which participants will advance use of networks of fifth generation (5G) in cars.

The project manager selects the company Ericsson. It was supported by 13 more companies, including Bosch, Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya, Centro Tecnológico de Automoción de Galicia, Chalmers University of Technology Huawei, King’s College London, Marben Nokia, Orange PSA Group, Sequans, Viscoda and Volvo Cars.

Ericsson headed the project on use of a 5G communication in cars

The consortium headed by Ericsson in June, 2017 received financing in the amount of 8 million euros for project 5GCAR performed within the second stage of partnership of a 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G PPP) created at the initiative of European Commission for the purpose of creation of a 5G architecture.

101 projects of the different companies applied for participation in the second stage 5G PPP. According to the results of tender of investment received 21 projects from the European authorities, and it turned out 5GCAR among winners.

The financing selected with European Commission — an important step which will allow us to develop further project 5GCAR according to the requirements of the market designated until the end of 2020 — the head of the French office Ericsson Franck Bouetard says. — Existence of such project in Europe is important on a global scale. Project deliverables will allow to create new types of business and to provide jobs for Europeans in the future.

Before 5GCAR tasks of a research of technologies for the motor transport of the future are set. Till May, 2019 supporters of the project should develop the general system architecture of a 5G providing the optimized end-to-end connection of transport (V2X) for creation of the V2X-services working based on network with an instant response.[1]
