Apache Software Foundation (ASF) is the non-profit fund organized on March 25, 1999 by the staff of Apache Group. The headquarters is in the city of Delaver (USA). The ASF fund is a supporter of open source software and lives due to fininsovy influences from the largest IT corporations which Google, Yahoo! and even Microsoft are among. If earlier the organization was engaged only in support of the products and development, then today a fundamental obligation of ASF is legal protection of products and the Apache brand. It is remarkable that a staff of ASF are mainly enthusiasts, participants of many other open projects in information technology field.

2019

The translation of all projects on GitHub

On April 29, 2019 the Apache Software Foundation non-profit organization which is considered the world's largest community on software development open source, announced transfer of all the projects on GitHub.

Before for development of projects of Apache two control systems of versions were used: centralized control system of versions of Subversion and hostless system of Git. However in process of growth of popularity of GitHub authors of projects and community even more often wanted that their code was placed in this service, explained in Apache.

At the end of April, 2019 the fund completed integration of the infrastructure about GitHub and transfer on this portal of all the git-services.

Apache transferred all the projects to GitHub. Migration concerned 200 million code lines

It is about 350 projects also 200 million code lines. Access to them was got by extensive community GitHub which by the end of April, 2019 totals more than 21 million developers, over 2 million companies and the organizations, and the quantity of repositories in service exceeds 100 million. 700 members and more than 7 thousand developers who write the code for projects are a part of Apache Software Foundation fund.

Since 2014 on GitHub   the mirrors of repositories of Apache available only to reading were started. In 2016 the fund began to integrate the services with a repository and the GitHub tools.

At the end of April of the 2019th repositories of GitHub are transferred to discharge of primary and can be used for introduction and reviewing of changes. Own git-services Apache are transferred to work as spare mirrors.

It is supposed that use of GitHub instead of own infrastructure will help Apache to simplify work on projects and to use already usual to many new developers tools for transfer of changes, discussion and reviewing of the code and also will allow to organize interaction with developers of other projects. The volume of software development was $20 billion

According to fund, it provides free software on the Open Source model for the amount more than 20 bln. dollars of the C moment of foundation of ASF the number of the projects developed within Apache exceeded 350 (from which 52 in an incubator), they cover such areas as machine learning, Big Data, management of assembly of software, the cloud systems, content management, DevOps, IoT, mobile application development, the server systems and web frameworks.

Projects with the open code pass under the aegis ASF as they are attracted by flexibility of organizational model of fund and the opportunity for joint development given them. However in addition to associated from ASF projects there are thousands of other projects which are not his members, but, nevertheless, release the products under the license Apache.

The license Apache is the open permissive (allowing) license which grants right of access to open code base and encourages entering into it of a feasible deposit of independent kontributor. Main advantage of the license Apache is not only in its openness, but also that it allows suppliers to layer over open code base the target code for development (and sales) corporate solutions.

ASF was succeeded to create the neutral, not depending on certain producers and credible platform for development of the open source software developed by forces of community. Development is supervised by more than 7000 kontributor. The code base of all projects of Apache contains more than 200 million lines. In 20 years in code bases of projects 3 million changes covering more than one billion code lines were accepted.

1994-1999

The history of fund is directly connected with Apache HTTP Server - the most popular product of the organization. Work on this solution began in 1994. The group of eight developers founded the company which was originally called as Apache Group and already then is reformed in non-profit fund. The first official meeting of the management of Apache Software Foundation was held on April 13, 1999, and on the basis of a consensus, the list of members of Apache Software Foundation was approved. Brian Beldorf, Ken Kor, Mark Cox, Lars Elberkht, Ralf S. Engelshal, Roy T. Fielding, Dean Gode, Bin Hyde, Jim Yagelski, Alexey Kozut, Martin Kramer, Ben Laurie, Doug Makekern, Aram Mirzade, Samir Perk, Cliff Skolnik, Mark Slemko, William Stodart, Paul Sutton, Randi Terbush and Dirk-Willem Van-Gilk became them.

Interesting Facts

Initially the company was engaged in development of patches to different programs. From it there was a word A PAtCHy which tranformirovatsya in Apache.
