2018: Decline of revenue by 2% to 314.8 billion yens; leaving from the market of cameras

The Japanese producer of electronics Casio abandons the market of digital compact cameras yielding to it losses in connection with low demand for these products because of distribution of smartphones with the advanced photoopportunities. Casio announced the decision on May 9 the 2018th, along with the publication of the report for the financial year which expired for the company on March 31.

Financial performance of Casio

According to the results of 2018 financial year of delivery of Casio digital cameras, including Exilim and other models, were reduced to 550 thousand pieces that on 200 thousand devices there is less level planned by the company. Besides, the present annual sales volume of cameras of Casio was the tenth part from peak values of 2007, Kyodo tells.[1]

Decline in demand for tsifrokompakta against the background of distribution of smartphones with the built-in cameras turned back for division of Digital Camera reduction of revenue for 34%, to 12.3 billion yens ($112.6 million at the rate of for May 11, 2018) and also losses in the amount of 4.9 billion yens ($44.8 million).

Financial performance of Casio

As a result was decided to refuse this direction, but the president of Casio Kazuhiro Kashio said that the company intends to use the technologies in the field of digital cameras on other directions connected with medicine and sport.

In spite of the fact that the company suffered losses on production of cameras, projectors and musical instruments, in general for the expired fiscal year the net profit of Casio grew by 6%, to 19.6 billion yens ($179.4 million). At the same time revenue was reduced by 2% and made 314.8 billion yens ($2.88 billion).[2]

History

1946-1995

Casio conducts the history since 1946 when the founder Tadao Kashio opened a workshop on production of parts for microscopes and transmissions. In the 1957th the Casio Computer company was registered, and then it provided the first-ever completely electric compact calculator, and in 1965 — the first desktop electronic calculator with memory.

In 1974 the company released the first hours under the name Casiotron, in 1980 — the first self-produced musical instrument — a digital piano of Casiotone, and in 1983 — the first G-Shock shockproof watches. In the 1995th Casio became the pioneer in one more area, having presented the first-ever digital camera with the LCD display.
