2018: Sony buys EMI and becomes the largest musical label

On May 22, 2018 Sony announced purchase of a controlling stake of EMI Music Publishing therefore the Japanese corporation becomes the world's largest publisher of music.

Under the terms of the transaction, Sony for $2.2 billion acquires 60% of the shares EMI at Mubadala investment company from the UAE and increases the share in a label from 30 to 90%. Besides, Sony will acquire the rights more than for 2 million musical compositions, including the classical ballad Over The Rainbow and  a hit Hoziyer Take Me to  Church. The musical directory of Sony thanks to this absorption increases to 4.5 million works.

By May, 2018 15% of world publishing house of music are the share of EMI. Consolidation of the company with the corresponding business of Sony (Sony ATV) will make the Japanese giant the market leader with a market share in the amount of 26%, the Reuters agency with reference to the representative of Sony reports. Other largest musical labels are Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, their shares are not specified.

The CEO of Sony Kenichiro Yoshida said that "musical business  few years endured revival about the last", and  the company expects that this acquisition "will be especially important milestone for  our long-term growth".

Together with acquisition of a controlling stake in EMI the Sony company undertakes the debt debt of the British publisher which as of March 31, 2018 was about $1.36 billion. After closing of the transaction of Sony hopes to increase the income from an asset. Proceeding from the cost of the transaction and debts, EMI Music Publishing it is estimated at $4.75 billion.

According to the results of financial year which will come to the end at the end of March of the 2019th calendar, Sony to expect to get from the musical business profit in the amount of 112 billion yens (about $1 billion at the rate of for May 22). In 2020 financial year the corporation is going to bring this indicator to 130 billion[1]
