2017: The forecast of threat from Internet of Things

The head of research division of F-Secure Mikko Hipponen, speaking at the Black Hat USA 2017 conference (on July 26-27), gave a series of forecasts for the next two decades. One of a factor of sweeping changes Hipponen called cryptocurrencies. The expert also saw threat in Internet of Things.

According to the expert, the bitcoin and its analogs will take away some part of business from traditional banks, but will not sideline them completely. And here growth of value of cryptocurrencies will affect work of law enforcement agencies significantly as to monitor criminal transactions and money muling it will become much more difficult.

Besides, as Hipponen noted, even more often not only cybermalefactors, but also "normal" criminals demand the redemption in cryptocurrencies. So, for example, in 2017 in Brazil kidnappers of the person demanded the redemption in cryptocurrency. Fortunately, then the hostage managed to be released.[1]

The expert of F-Secure also noted that quantum computings in the near future will reach such performance level that the efficiency of SSL enciphering will sharply decrease. Already it is possible to claim safely that quantum computings are not a fantasy from the distant future, and very close reality. IBM in 2017 announced creation of the commercial universal platform of quantum computings based on the cloud services.

Hipponen also pointed to the threat proceeding from devices of Internet of Things.

Once day when consumers buy products will come, without understanding that it IoT-devices. And the "smart" device is a vulnerable device — the expert noted.

According to him, creation of separate, independent network is necessary for "smart" devices.

In this plan Mikko Hipponen repeats statements of some Russian experts in security who since the beginning of the 2000th call for creation of "the separate Internet" — for business, for the state organizations and so on — Georgy Lagoda, the CEO of SEC Consult Services company notices. — Emergence of "the separate Internet", however, is improbable as its creation is actually replacement of all world network infrastructure. The similar project will require resources of really fantastic scales. Besides structures of Internet of Things all the same will have to communicate with "the external Internet", and, respectively the risk of cyber attacks will remain. In general all networks of global information space anyway aim at consolidation, but not segmentation.

Most of all Hipponena concerns a possibility of the "state" cyber attacks. Today the mankind is at war drones, the expert noticed and asked a question that happens if to the software in millions of home computers and IoT-devices the instruction at the same time arrives to cause overheating and ignition of the hardware.

Technically it is quite possible, Hipponen is sure, having shown in practice as it is possible to cause ignition of the IoT-device.

1998-2002

The F-Secure corporation was founded in 1988, in 1999 became open joint stock company. The company has two head offices in the cities of Helsinki and San Jose, performs the activity more than in 60 countries, has 12 representations worldwide.

For many years F-Secure is a producer of technologies which are applied afterwards by many other developers. For example, in 1991 F-Secure developed the first heuristic anti-virus analyzer, in 1993 – the first anti-virus solution with the system of central office, and in 2002 – the first anti-virus software for mobile phones (Communicator Nokia).
