2012: Google searcher, most popular in Kazakhstan

As of August, 2012 the Google Internet search engine bypassed in popularity in Kazakhstan the competitors of "Yandex" and Poisk@mail.ru.

2011: Withdrawal from the zone kz and return

  • On June 8, 2011 the Google company announced that the authorities of Kazakhstan demanded from it to place google.kz search engine on the server hardware which is physically located in the territory of the country.

Within the country it is told about the requirement to place the websites of the domain zone .kz in the order of the Ministry of Communications and information of the Republic of Kazakhstan. As representatives of Google note, executing this order, the company will be forced to redirect all search queries from google.kz on the servers which are in Kazakhstan. Now search queries to Google on any domain are automatically processed on the fastest way, regardless of geographic location or frontiers.

"We are delivered in a difficult situation: the attempt to build borders on the Internet raises for us a number of the important issues concerning not only efficiency of request processing, but also personal data protection and freedom of speech. If we were forced to process search queries on www.google.kz only on the local servers located in the territory of Kazakhstan, we would promote fragmentation of the Internet", - Bill Karan, the senior vice president of Google and the head of department of infrastructure of search said.

As a result, the Internet giant decided to redirect visitors of google.kz on the website www.google.com in Kazakh. According to Karan, such solution should lead to some decline in quality of search for the Kazakhstan users, "as results will not be processed according to local specifics any more".

The vice president of Google also emphasized that similar measures of the authorities, the forcing Internet companies to make the choice between preventing to development of the free Internet and decline in quality of services, cause a loss first of all to users. He urged the governments of the countries of the world to combine the efforts in work on development of the free Internet.

  • On June 14, 2011 the Google company recovered work of the searcher in the domain zone .kz of Kazakhstan. Now at an input on the website the searcher automatically redirects users from Kazakhstan on the service located in a domain zone of the country, allowing clients of service to process results of search queries taking into account local specifics.

It became clear that the staff of search giant was misinformed of work subtleties in the domain zone .kz. According to the president of the Kazakhstan association of the IT companies Nurlan Isin, only domain names registered in a domain zone of the republic after September 7, 2010 are obliged to conduct work with the Kazakhstan[1].
