2024: Olzhas Bektenov appointed new prime minister

The government of Kazakhstan resigned on February 5, 2024, the presidential press service said.

The duties of the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan were temporarily performed by the First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar.

February 6, 2024 Olzhas Bektenov officially became the new Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. Previously, he served as head of the Anti-Corruption Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Parliament almost unanimously supported the candidacy of Olzhas Bektenov. Only deputies from the OSDP and the NPK abstained.

Bektenov's candidacy for the post of prime minister was presented by the head of the ruling party, Erlan Koshanov. President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Tokayev approved it, and also noted that the former Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov himself resigned. The appointment came as a surprise to all political analysts.

Of the 26 people, 21 officials retained their seats in the Government. Only 5 new persons were added.

  • The new head of the Presidential Office - Dadebaev Aibek Arkabaevich, previously served as manager of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. His political career started in 2008, when he became an assistant to Senate President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. In 2011, after the chief, he was transferred to the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the UN Office in Geneva.

  • The new Minister of Finance - Takiev Madi Tokeshovich, deputy of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, previously served as Chairman of the Committee on Finance and Budget of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He has the title of "Excellent Tax Officer." He has been the head of the department of socio-economic monitoring of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan since September 2020.

  • The new Minister of Health is Alnazarova Akmaral Sharipbaevna, formerly a deputy of the Senate of Parliament from the Kyzylorda region, a bachelor of economics and an organizer-hygienist of the highest category.

  • The new Minister of Emergency Situations - Arinov Genghis Sairanovich, previously served as Deputy Head of the State Security Service, Head of the Presidential Security Service, Major General.

  • The new Minister of National Economy - Baybazarov Nurlan Serikovich, previously headed the Industrial Development Fund, a subsidiary of the Development Bank of Kazakhstan, then served as chairman of the board and member of the board of directors of the Baiterek National Managing Holding.
