The network of Media Markt hypermarkets is formed in 1979 and is a part of Media-Saturn-Holding GmbH holding — the leader of the retail market of Germany and Europe selling electronics and home appliances provided by two brands — Media Markt and Saturn. Media Markt and Saturn are controlled independently of each other and are the competing retail brands.

As of 2011 the holding which controlling stake belongs to METRO AG includes more than 850 shops in 16 countries of Europe and Asia:

  • 624 Media Markt in 15 countries (in Italy shops carry the name Media World) and
  • 231 Saturns in 13 countries.

The average floor space of shop makes 3 thousand m ², in some shops it reaches 15.5 thousand m ².

2010

Aggregate turnover of holding in 2010 reached 20.8 billion euros, and number of staff was more than 70 thousand human.

2005

In 2005 the sales volume of Media-Makrt and Saturn companies was 13.3 billion euros, and the number of employees reached 37,230 people.

History

  • On November 24, 1979 Leopold Shtifel, Walter Hans, Erich and Helge Kellerkhals opened the first Media Markt in Munich.
  • 1985 — 1988 — Kaufhof purchases the main share in Media Markt holding. The Media Markt network contains more than ten shops.
  • 1989 — Media Markt opens the first shop in France.
  • 1990 — 1992 — the Media Markt holding absorbs Saturn Hansa Handels Gmbh, the managing director of Saturn network and lays the foundation of strategy of management of two brands. The first Media Markt appears in Austria. The network opens the first shop in Italy under the Media World brand.
  • 1993 — 1995 — consolidation of Media Markt and Saturn networks in Media-Saturn holding is complete.
  • 1996 — several German trading companies create the METRO AG group. This concern possesses 70% of Media-Saturn-Holding Gmbh.
  • 1997 — 1999 — the 100-th German Media Markt opens in Munich. The network enters the market of Poland.
  • 2000 — the first Media Markt opens in the Netherlands. The shop in Amsterdam becomes the three-hundredth shop of Media-Saturn Group holding.
  • 2002 — Media Markt begins work in Belgium.
  • 2004 — Saturn opens the 100-th shop in Oberhausen and also enters the market of Poland and Hungary. The first Media Markt shop opens in Portugal. The five-hundredth shop of Media-Saturn group opens in Bilbao.
  • 2005 — in Hamburg the three-hundredth German Media Markt opens. The entry of network in Greece took place.
  • 2006 — on December 2 opening of two shops in Moscow. On December 21 the same year the first Media Markt opens in St. Petersburg. Main article: Media Markt Russia
