2015: IBM buys Merge for $1 billion

On August 6, 2015 the IBM corporation announced purchase of Merge Healthcare for $1 billion. The purchased developer of solutions for collecting, archiving, viewing and transfer of images will it is integrated with started in the April, 2015 by division of IBM specializing in the analysis of medical data by means of the system of artificial intelligence Watson.

Under the terms of the agreement, IBM will pay shareholders of Merge $7.13 for each security belonging to them that honor one third more market value of actions as of August 5, 2015. Against the background of the statement for sale of Merge of quotation of the company jumped more than by 31%, and the share value of IBM changed slightly.

Solutions of Merge will be integrated with division of IBM, specializing in the analysis of medical data by means of the system of artificial intelligence

The transaction is going to be closed until the end of 2015, but at first regulating authorities and shareholders of Merge should approve it. Everything will pay the amount of IBM taking into account a debt cash. According to analysts of Maxim Group, competitors of IBM can offer higher price for Merge.

IBM is going to integrate the platform of management offered Merge medical images with the cloud service Watson Health Cloud intended for storage and data analysis in health facilities. Thanks to this integration doctors and researchers will be able to compare and study any medical information, for example, the clinical record, cases something in family, data on similar symptoms at other patients, results of clinical trials and tests.

"Visualization takes the central place in effective diagnostics and treatment, however it is more important to exchange these images for high-quality and economic service of patients", – O'Neill (Brooks O'Neil) Reuters agency quotes the analyst of Dougherty and Co Brooks.

It is noted that purchase of Merge will open IBM access to more than 7.5 thousand medical institutions which use technology platforms of the absorbed developer.[1]
