Motorola Solutions Year Totals: Profit Drop Doubles

Taking into account only the so-called continuing operations, when closed or sold assets are not taken into account, Motorola Solutions had an annual profit of $640 million against a loss of $697 million in 2014. In 2015, the company's expenses decreased by more than $210 million.

In the structure of annual revenue, revenues from equipment sales amounted to $3.7 billion, which is 3% less than a year earlier. Motorola Solutions' service business fell by the same amount to $2 billion.

In early 2016, Motorola Solutions closed the acquisition of British communications service provider Airwave Solutions for more than $1 billion in order to strengthen its service direction. Airwave's revenue, as expected in Motorola Solutions, in 2016 will be $450 million.

2015: Motorola Solutions may sell

In early February 2015, two authoritative representatives of the Western media immediately reported on the upcoming sale of Motorola Solutions. If this happens, the legendary American brand will finally lose its independence.

According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing people familiar with the situation, Motorola Solutions management is considering selling the company. So far, all procedures regarding a potential deal are at an early stage, the newspaper said.[2]

Motorola Solutions may sell

According to her, the acquisition of Motorola Solutions is interested in the manufacturer of electronic control and automation systems Honeywell International. In addition to this company, several private investment firms, as well as Raytheon and General Dynamics, are eyeing the deal, Bloomberg reports data from its knowledgeable source.[3]

The news agency also reports that Motorola Solutions is looking for a buyer in collaboration with financial advisers. Previously, banks considered Motorola Solutions as a target for direct private investment, but transactions using third-party financing when buying a controlling stake in a company of such a large size have been very rare in recent years, the WSJ notes.

In 2014, Motorola Solutions made a net profit of $1.3 billion on revenue of $5.9 billion. Throughout that year, the value of the shares remained virtually unchanged. After rumors about the sale of securities of the telecommunications equipment manufacturer rose in price by 5%. As of February 6, 2015, the market capitalization of Motorola Solutions is $15.6 billion.

If Motorola Solutions is sold, the final point will be set in the history of this company. This vendor appeared as a result of the crushing of Motorola Inc. into two companies in 2011 - Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility. The latter, which specializes in the development and sale of mobile phones, was sold twice - first by Google and then Lenovo.

Since the advent of Motorola Solutions, the company's annual revenue has been steadily declining (in 2014, the fall was 6%), which could not but disappoint investors who want to receive dividends and expect revenue growth from the vendor. Motorola Solutions officials have not yet commented on the possible sale of the company.

2014

Motorola Solutions revenue drop of 6%

On February 4, 2015, Motorola Solutions released its 2014 financial statement. The net profit of the American company increased, but revenue decreased by 6% due to weak equipment sales.[4]

At the end of 2014, total sales of Motorola Solutions amounted to $5.88 billion against $6.23 billion a year earlier. Net income for the same period increased from $1.1 billion, or $4.06 per share, to $1.3 billion, or $5.29 per security of the company. The telecommunications equipment manufacturer's operating loss exceeded $1 billion, while in 2013 it received an operating profit of $947 million.

Motorola Solutions revenue falls 6% on poor hardware sales

Motorola Solutions CEO and Chairman Greg Brown says the company's business is showing signs of improvement, boosted by North American sales growth and a large number of orders.

"Our continued progress in simplifying the business and streamlining the cost structure will help us achieve long-term success," said the head of Motorola Solutions.

Sales of products brought the company $3.81 billion in 2014, which is 7% less than a year ago. The operating profit of $639 million recorded in this business in 2013 was replaced by an operating loss of $667 million a year later. The reason for this decline was a drop in sales in North America in the first half of 2014, as well as weak performance in the Asia-Pacific region.

In 2014, the service division provided Motorola Solutions with revenue of $2.07 billion, which decreased by 2% on an annualized basis. The operating loss from the provision of services reached $339 million, although a year earlier this direction was profitable.

Motorola Solutions expects to end 2015 with earnings ranging from $3.15 to $3.35 per share and revenue that will show zero growth at best compared to 2014, and fall 2% at worst. Those surveyed by Thomson Reuters predict a 1 percent rise in the company's sales and a profit of $3.35 per security.

Motorola Solutions called the annual forecast weak and explained it by the influence of an expensive dollar, due to which the company does not count $160 million. In the fourth quarter of 2014, this loss of the vendor associated with the strengthening of the American currency was measured at $27 million.

Selling Corporate Business to Zebra Technologies

In April 2014, Zebra Technologies and Motorola Solutions announced a binding agreement under which Motorola Solutions would sell its corporate business to Zebra, collecting $3.45 billion in cash for it[5].

The corporate business, which under the terms of the deal goes to Zebra Technologies, includes Motorola mobile computers, barcode scanners, RFID solutions, tablet computers, microkiosks, commercial radio stations.

The company's portfolio also includes solutions for government and law enforcement agencies, in particular the iDEN walkie-talkie. This direction will still be owned by Motorola Solutions.

The Zebra Technologies and Motorola Solutions deal has already received board approval from both parties. It is planned to close it at the end of 2014 after the implementation of standard procedures, the official statement said. As part of the deal, approximately 4.5 thousand employees of Motorola Solutions will move to work at Zebra.

With the help of Motorola Solutions, Zebra intends to strengthen its position in the global market, significantly expand its customer base and geography of presence. Motorola Solutions will continue to produce solutions for the public sector and public services.

The deal to sell the corporate business to Motorola Solutions was closed on October 27, 2014. In January 2015, Zebra Technologies and Motorola Solutions announced the completion of Zebra's acquisition of Enterprise, a former division of Motorola Solutions. The transaction amounted to 3.45 billion, dollars USA of which 200 million were paid from the company's own funds, and the remaining 3.25 billion were borrowed funds. Under this agreement, about 4.5 thousand Motorola Solutions employees involved in the company's divisions in different countries should join the staff of Zebra Technologies.

2012: ICSA Labs Certification

Motorola Solutions announced in April 2012 that it had been certified by ICSA Labs, a leading data security research organization. The ICSA Certificate guarantees a high level of product security and compliance with the most stringent security requirements. Both access points and network controllers included in the WiNG5 portfolio were tested - thus Motorola became the only manufacturer to receive certification for both types of solutions. ICSA will continue to improve certified devices in parallel with the emergence of new security threats.

2011: Split the company into Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility

The decision to split Motorola was made in early 2010. Motorola Solutions was created in 2011 due to the division of Motorola into two independent companies. The second company was Motorola Mobility, which in May 2012 was bought by Google for $12.5 billion.

2006: Purchase of Symbol Technologies

On September 19, 2006, Motorola "absorbed" Symbol Technologies, Inc. (the Symbol brand was owned by The Enterprise Mobility Company; headquarters in the United States). Symbol had about 900 patents in laser scanning, barcode image scanning, RFID, laser projection displays, mobile computing technology, wireless technology, and produced over 7 million barcode scanners and data acquisition terminals. The deal amounted to about $3.9 billion ($15 per share).

The total number of Motorola personnel in December 2006 is 66 thousand people.

  • Revenue for 2006 - $42.9 billion (in 2005 - $36.8 billion), net profit - $3.4 billion
  • Revenue for 2007 - $36.6 billion, net loss - $49 million
  • 2008 revenue - $30.1 billion (down 18%), net loss - $4.16 billion

The main problems of the company during this period are associated with losses of the mobile phone division. Interestingly, in almost all official pictures of the company's cell phones, the time on the displays was 11:35 AM, or the track length in the player was 11:35.
