History

2022-2023: Curtailment of activities

In the first half of 2022, against the background of the geopolitical situation, SAP decided to suspend the provision of rights to SAP software and databases, and also imposed a ban on the conclusion of any new contracts with customers in the Russian Federation and Republic of Belarus. Since March 2022, at the direction of the global SAP, the sale of new rights of use to all customers in the Russian Federation has been stopped. Taking this into account, the volume of operations of SAP CIS, one of the key customers of SAP Labs, has significantly decreased, according to the explanations to the financial reporting of the latter. The average number of SAP Labs at the end of the year 2022 amounted to 41 people, and in 2021 there were 300 people. In 2023, a further significant reduction in the average headcount is expected. At the same time, as of October 2023, the SAP Labs legal entity formally continues to operate.

2021: SAP Labs CIS revenue shrinks 3%

As TAdviser found out, the revenue of SAP Labs CIS decreased by 3%, from 2.8 billion to 2.7 billion rubles, and the net loss reached 45 million rubles. In 2020, the company was profitable - 207 million rubles. Read more here

2017: Startup Focus in Russia

SAP announced in June 2017 the operational launch of the Startup Focus program in Russia. As part of the collaboration, SAP will help Russian startups create solutions for B2B customers and bring them to the Russian and global markets.

"Our
goal is to bring a large group of start-ups into the program to get at least 10-12 proven projects that we can bring to market this year. There is a strong startup community in Russia, and we want local developers to be able to create corporate B2B solutions that are interesting for SAP customers in Russia and globally. It doesn't matter where the startup is geographically - its solutions will be available to our customer base around the world, "said Manju Bansal, SAP vice president and global head of Startup Focus
.

Startup Focus is a virtual accelerator for startups developing corporate services with a focus on machine learning, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, AR/VR, etc. Startups from 65 countries of the world are participating in the global program today. Participation in the program is free, and SAP does not receive a stake in companies, which makes the accelerator attractive to innovative companies at an early stage. To enter the program, startups must meet strict criteria, only 15% of the companies that applied are selected for the program.

Members access SAP technologies (including SAP HANA and SAP Cloud Platform) to develop or launch their solutions. In addition to technology, SAP also provides access to technical experts, including software architects, to help startups accelerate product development.

The program was launched in 2012, and more than 5,600 startups have already applied to participate, 925 of them have been approved. The program produced 265 proven solutions to sell to SAP customers worldwide.

The SAP Startup Focus team aims to achieve success for its startups and, depending on the level of project readiness and customer interests, helps promising companies in the following areas:

  • Participation in global exhibitions and conferences with SAP;
  • Development of positioning, key messages and content for marketing;
  • Assistance in determining the appropriate model for licensing and business;
  • Presentation to Venture Investors;
  • Communication with the press and analysts;
  • Support of customer transactions.

In 4 years, 12 startups were acquired by leading IT companies, including Apple, Salesforce, Autodesk and Software AG. In 2016, startups from the SAP Startup Focus program entered into about 100 deals on their solutions with large SAP corporate clients and made significant profits.

Opening of the Internet of Things center in Russia

In June 2016 , SAP announced the opening of the IoT Solutions Center in Russia. The center is conceived as a platform where companies can get acquainted with the latest trends in the field of the "Internet of Things," "Industry 4.0," cloud technologies, machine learning and others.

There will also be a discussion of ideas and how to implement them with the involvement of local and global SAP experts. Cooperation with development companies is also envisaged to create solutions or their prototypes both as part of joint innovation projects and at the request of customers by SAP. The latter implies custom and standard development, consulting.

One of the main goals of the center is the development of scenarios for various industries: medicine, the industrial and raw materials industries, agriculture and animal husbandry, transport and many others, they say in the Russian representative office of SAP.

Igor Pak, Head of the SAP Joint Innovation Laboratory in the CIS, will head the new structure .

The fact that it is planned to open an Internet of Things center in Russia, TAdviser was told in April by the CEO of SAP Labs CIS Andrei Bivetsky at a forum SAP To Moscow in. Then he noted that so far SAP has single such centers around the world: they are only in, and. Germany France Japan

Interest in the topic of the "Internet of Things" among Russian customers is quite high, said the CEO of SAP Labs. Earlier, according to him, customer relations specialists from the Russian SAP first worked out projects with customers of such solutions, after which German colleagues were involved to create a prototype solution. Now the creation of prototypes of solutions for local clients and their further expansion will be carried out in Russia, said Andrei Bivetsky. SAP consultants will be involved in the implementation of the created solutions.

Solutions created by the team of the Russian IoT Center for local customers can subsequently be sold to customers in other countries, the CEO of SAP Labs CIS believes. For example, this would be possible with solutions for agriculture, such as an "electronic herd" or a "smart" tractor, he argues.

The launch of the SAP HANA Cloud Platform in the SAP data center in Moscow, from which the company provides local customers with access to its cloud solutions, should support the development of the Internet of Things in Russia. This platform is capable of providing data exchange from various sensors that are used in Internet of Things projects, noted Andrey Bivetsky.

Bivetsky found it difficult to name how many people will work at the "Internet of Things" center, noting that staff will be recruited as projects appear. In total, according to the CEO of SAP Labs, more than 350 people work in its division as of the beginning of 2016. The development teams are based in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Izhevsk and part of the state in Kyiv.

In 2015, the development center expanded the staff by several dozen people, Bivetsky says. Personnel were recruited, for example, to the new SAP Labs CIS Custom Solutions Development Unit and to the SAP Logistics Solutions Localization Unit.

2015: Opening a workshop for developers in Russia

In May 2015, SAP Labs CIS opened the first D-shop in Russia - an innovative development center for employees and participants in the SAP ecosystem . The main purpose of its creation is to provide developers with the conditions so that they can implement their innovative ideas related to the use of SAP technologies.

The D-shop is organized according to the principle of a workshop and is equipped with various equipment and gadgets: for example, there is a 3D printer and a 3D scanner, augmented reality glasses, touch networks, drones (see the photo of the equipment below in the photo gallery). By linking them to SAP software, you can create new, non-standard products and solutions. The capabilities of the center allow you to simulate, prototype solutions, debug and test them.

Dmitry Armyakov, CEO of SAP Labs CIS, told TAdviser that the most promising ideas of employees can receive funding from SAP for further development. According to him, SAP developers in any region have the opportunity to present their ideas at the global level. There is a special team in SAP to analyze and evaluate them. If the company considers the idea promising, then further work is carried out with its authors on the principle of an internal startup: they are helped to work out a business model, assist in creating a prototype, help with finding a team of like-minded people, etc.

CEO of SAP Labs CIS Dmitry Armyakov

Dmitry Armyakov notes that in addition to the function of a platform for creativity, research and invention, D-shop is also designed to stimulate developers to communicate more with each other, exchange ideas and conduct joint activities.

According to the plans of SAP Labs CIS, among those who can take advantage of the D-shop opportunities should be students of universities belonging to the SAP University Alliance. They will be able to use the technologies available in the workshop, for example, for the preparation of coursework and thesis.

Russia became the fifth country where D-shop opened. Dmitry Armyakov told TAdviser that the first such center appeared at the end of 2014 in Germany. He also appeared in the USA, China and India. SAP plans to open centers in all its laboratories.

As an example of solutions that have already appeared based on the results of the D-shop in the USA and Germany, SAP Labs cites the SAP AR Warehouse Picker augmented reality application for use in warehouses and for TOID. The prototype for another product, released from the D-Shop, was the idea of collecting information on long and hard-to-reach objects using drones for use in repair work. The information that drones collect can also be displayed on the screen of smart glasses with software installed .

Last year, in addition to offices in Moscow and St. Petersburg, SAP Labs CIS also had an office in Izhevsk, created on the basis of the KMS Software division acquired in this city. Its development was integrated into the SAP SuccessFactors Onboarding solution, and SAP Labs CIS, thus, was replenished with developers. Together with them, as of mid-2013, the total number of SAP Labs CIS was about 150 people.

SAP CIS Executive Director Natalia Parmenova told TAdviser that the development teams previously listed in SAP CIS itself were also transferred to SAP Labs CIS. Being withdrawn into a separate structure, it became easier for them to attract international resources to projects, she explains. So, at the beginning of 2014, about 50 SAP employees from all over the world participate in SAP Labs CIS projects to localize products for Russia, Parmenova says.

About a hundred employees are involved in the product localization unit in SAP Labs CIS, TAdviser cited data in SAP CIS. The use of the above international resources allows them, firstly, to carry out more projects, and secondly, provides additional expertise where necessary.

SAP Labs CIS also has a block of employees focusing on developments on the SAP HANA product, both global in nature and functionality specifically for Russian users. The number of employees in this area is up to 20 people, told TAdviser in SAP CIS.

Some of the specialists of SAP Labs CIS - up to 10 people - are involved in the laboratory of joint innovations at Skolkovo, previously created in order to support the development of innovative applications and solutions based on SAP technology products by local companies.

The Russian representative office of SAP also told TAdviser that in 2013, post-sales support specialists were transferred from SAP CIS to SAP Labs CIS.

SAP expects that in 2014 the staff of SAP Labs CIS will continue to grow and may reach at least 320 employees. With this number, it will become one of the largest for SAP after development centers in India, China, the USA and Germany, according to the Russian representative office of the company.
