The arrests come about two months after similar charges were brought against four other Vivo executives, including a Chinese citizen, by Indian law enforcement, Reuters reported. This trial could aggravate relations between New Delhi and Beijing, which worsened due to the 2020 Indo-Chinese border conflict - an armed clash over the disputed Aksaichin region (located on the border of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the PRC, Pakistan and India). After that, India tightened control over Chinese business and investment in the country.

In connection with the arrest of Vivo top managers, Beijing urges the Indian authorities not to discriminate against Chinese companies. It is noted that China will provide legal protection and necessary assistance to the detained Vivo employees.
