History

2020: Start of service of the taxi without drivers

In the middle of July, 2020 the Chinese startup of WeRide announced start of service of pilotless taxi. The company already got permission to road tests of smart vehicles from local authorities in Guangzhou.

The service earned, but at first its opportunities will be limited: in particular, trips without drivers can be made between certain points. The company will use a number of security measures, including remote control of motor transport through a 5G network. Unmanned vehicles will be driven the manager in unusual traffic conditions, for example, at a roadwork or at time changes in traffic regulations from the authorities.

In the next two-three years we intend to implement completely unmanned vehicles, - the founder and the chief executive of WeRide Tony Hang Xu claims. - I am sure that WeRide will become the first company which will provide reliable services to the robotaxi in China.

In China WeRide competes with Apollo Baidu, companies AutoX, Pony.ai and the racer of Didi Chuxing which also test unmanned vehicles. Unlike them WeRide focused on development of technologies of autonomous driving of the 4th level at which the car can independently cope with the majority of road situations though the driver person can still undertake control of a situation.

The WeRide company manages two research centers in Beijing and San Jose and also regional department in Antsin, China. The park of the studied WeRide models consists from more than 100 cars which passed 2.6 million kilometers during open road tests. Earlier WeRide started public service of the robotaxi in Guangzhou, and in half a year signed the partnership agreement with Alibaba AutoNavi Gaode also known as Amap, for expansion of future program.[1]
