Information Technology in Airport Development

2021: Introduction of a facial recognition system to automate pre-flight procedures

In February 2021, it became known about the introduction of biometric control at Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo airports. The new technology will allow you to fully automate the passage of pre-flight procedures.

In the publication of February 12, 2021, Vedomosti, citing the Domodedovo press service, will soon be equipped with automated turnstiles (eGate) installed at the airport in the customs control zone, the departure gallery for international flights and all boarding gates in the near future with video cameras for face recognition.

This is done for the convenience of passengers, increasing the profit of airports and speeding up pre-flight procedures. They become completely automatic, without the participation of people and without presenting a passport - from the moment of registration until boarding the plane.

Airports "Domodedovo" and "Sheremetyevo" are introducing a facial recognition system

To use the new technology, a citizen of the Russian Federation must submit data to the Unified Biometric System in one of the bank branches, as well as give consent to the use of biometrics for specific purposes. Also, at Domodedovo, the passenger will be able to independently enter his biometric data at the check-in counters and at the CUSS kiosks for baggage registration.

Sheremetyevo is also working to expand biometric control. Now this technology is used only to ensure transport and aviation safety, but after making changes to the federal aviation rules, the airport will be able to provide biometric identification service to passengers.

When exactly such a biometric control system will work at airports is unknown by February 12, 2021. It all depends on how soon the use of technology is agreed by the Ministry of Transport, the newspaper notes.

Experts interviewed by Vedomosti believe that biometric technologies for identity recognition should become an alternative to the use of passports and other carriers at many stages of passage and service at the airport.[3]

2020: Launch of automatic garbage sorting in conjunction with S7 Airlines

Moscow Domodedovo Airport, together with S7 Airlines, applied an environmentally friendly approach to the management of non-food waste. Thanks to the joint initiative, about 45 tons of cardboard, plastic and film will be sorted and sent for processing every month. This was announced on February 11, 2020 by the press service of the airport.

Launching garbage sorting in conjunction with S7 Airlines

The innovation concerns the packaging of onboard food - snack boxes. Now, from each S7 Airlines flight arriving at Domodedovo, this type of waste will go through the stages of sorting, pressing and sending for further processing. Per day, 1.5 tons of waste (about 20 thousand snack boxes) will be suitable for further use.

Domodedovo Airport purchased equipment to launch the program. A special separator is installed at the on-board feed factory of the air harbor, which automatically sorts garbage. As a result, the main types of waste after flights (cassalettes, plastic appliances and packaging materials) fall into separate containers, which simplifies and speeds up the following stages of waste management: pressing, recycling and reuse.

The joint project with S7 Airlines lays the foundation for the large-scale introduction of modern approaches to sustainable development, based on the philosophy of conscious and careful use of natural resources. In the near future, garbage sorting will be carried out on flights of all airlines that operate flights to our airport,
said director of Moscow Domodedovo Airport Igor Borisov

2018: Bitcoins extorted from Domodedovo, threatening to collapse airport IT systems

Domodedovo Airport received an email from unknown persons demanding to pay them several hundred, bitcoins otherwise they will disrupt the normal functioning of the airport's navigation systems. The letter arrived at the mailbox, contact center the Domodedovo news agency reports in July 2018, Interfax[4] the[5]

An Interfax source at the airport said that the attackers called the timing of their intervention in the operation of the systems - by the next weekend. According to blackmailers, they have the necessary technical means to remotely interfere with the normal operation of the Domodedovo navigation equipment.

After receiving the letter, the airport management introduced enhanced security measures at the terminal and airfield. The source calls the measures taken "exhaustive," the press service of Domodedovo also told Interfax that there is no danger to the operation of the airport. The airport has a set of standard security procedures that are used if anonymous threats are received - these are the measures that have been implemented.

2017: Launch of authorization in WiFi network by credit card

On May 5, 2017, Moscow Domodedovo Airport launched a new identification mechanism when connected to free Wi-Fi network in the air harbor. Now visitors will be able to use a bank card for authorization.

Previously, identification was possible only through the number of the mobile operator. To access any public Wi-Fi network, user authorization is mandatory under the law "On Communication" of the Russian Federations.

Identification of users with a bank card is free. On the account of the visitor, 1 ruble is automatically reserved, which is then returned to the same card.

The settlement center for transactions is the Yandex.Cash service. The transaction is secure from the point of view of protecting user data. The service operates according to the international security standard Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. The standard was developed by Visa and MasterCard payment systems .

More than 49 thousand users register monthly in the Wi-Fi network of Domodedovo Airport. Internet traffic exceeds 6.6 terabytes. This is comparable to listening to music for more than 120 thousand hours.

2014: Launch of your own wi-fi network

In February 2014, Domodedovo Airport opened free access to the World Wide Web for passengers and guests: an unlimited Wi-Fi zone (DME_free) has been deployed in the airport complex. The launch of a Wi-Fi network on the territory of Domodedovo Airport is a joint project of the air harbor and the Jet Infosystems company.

Advanced technologies that provide broadcasting of the Wi-Fi network in the passenger terminal of Domodedovo Airport allow you to use an unlimited connection in time - passengers can listen to their favorite music, enjoy communication on the Internet, view media files. The installed equipment has the necessary certificates of the Russian Federation, meets the requirements of the 802.11 a/b/g/n standard, supports MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology, operates in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands.

The public Wi-Fi network of Domodedovo Airport includes 360 access points and provides the possibility of centralized management and monitoring (based on Cisco Prime and Cisco MSE technologies), as well as meets the necessary requirements in terms of information security. For continuous operation, all vital network facilities are equipped with automatic data storage functions and uninterrupted power supply systems.

As of February 2014, Wi-Fi coverage covers the main part of the passenger terminal, check-in areas, waiting rooms, as well as the Domodedovo Airport gallery of internal air lines. Soon, the unlimited Wi-Fi zone will appear in the zone of international air lines. The airport is planning a further expansion of the network with an increase in the number of access points to 2000.

2012: Increase in ICT costs from RUB 950 million to RUB 1.5 billion

In 2012, Domodedovo's IT costs will increase to 1.5 billion rubles, Viktor Ponomarenko, IT director of the airport, who is responsible for the distribution of funds, told CNews. "More is budgeted, but in reality we will spend about this amount," he estimates. For comparison, in 2011 the same indicator amounted to 950 million rubles. Ponomarenko explained that communication is also funded from this budget in addition to IT work itself. But another unit is engaged in frames and scanners for the passage of passengers. In addition, the airport is not related to departmental customs and migration information systems, as well as the deployment of WiFi networks for passengers - they are carried out by partner operators.

Of the 2012 projects for which this funding goes, Chief information officer primarily highlights the construction of a second airport data center, which should be completed by the end of 2012. By July, technological WiFi should appear throughout the airport, except for the runway, allowing employees to access systems from mobile devices. Now such a network works only in the terminal building, on the platform and in the cargo terminal. Literally two months later, Ponomarenko intends to complete work on ground observation of cars and aircraft moving around the field. Dispatchers will receive warnings from her about dangerous rapprochements.

In February 2012, the installation of a perimeter control system is completed, i.e. sensors on the fence (movements, vibrations, no decision has been made on underflows - the airport doubts their applicability in the Moscow climate), infrared cameras. Such a "smart fence" should transmit to operators an image in case of perimeter violation and an assessment of the degree of threat.

Ponomarenko promises to install high-definition television surveillance (Full HD, 1500 cameras) by November 2012, implementing control over the separation of objects (for example, if a person left a bag), determining the license plates of cars in the parking lot and congestion of passengers at border control with automatic generation of an application for opening additional booths.

In addition to the above, biometric control of access to the apron for personnel will appear in October, and security officers will receive portable video cameras by May (project "Cyborg"). In the middle of the year, a situation center should be launched. Finally, there will be software systems for managing resources (RMS), taking into account fuels and lubricants and the production of onboard power, as well as its own electronic trading platform.

The main costs of the airport's IT budget are security-related projects. Recall that a year ago, a terrorist attack occurred at Domodedovo. There are no noticeably predominant integrators or manufacturers at Domodedovo, Ponomarenko assures, without naming specific companies: "We work with almost all the largest." According to CNews, of the notable integrators with Domodedovo, NVision, CROC, Asteros, Jet Infosystems work.
