Hasso Plattner is one of the founders of the German company SAP.

Career

2003-2008

Together with Dietmar Hopp, Klaus Velenreter, Hans Werner Hector and Klaus Chira, he became the co-founder of SAP. Until 2003, Plattner was chairman of the board of directors of the company, as of August 2008, he served as chairman of the supervisory board.

2012

On December 3, 2012, it became known that Hasso Plattner sold part of the company's shares belonging to him in the amount of about 120 million euros ($155.74 million). This is stated in the official statement of the German software manufacturer.

The sale of Plattner's shares will be handled by an unnamed bank, so that the first sale took place in November 2012, and the process itself will last from January to November 2013. Moreover, the shares will be sold both on the stock and over-the-counter market.

The value of SAP shares at the beginning of December 2012 was about 60 euros per share. According to Thomson Reuters at the end of September 2012, Plattner was the largest shareholder of SAP AG, owning 9.89% of the shares (121.49 million securities). Based on current prices, this number of shares is equivalent to about 7 billion euros.

The capitalization of SAP AG is 73 billion euros, in Germany SAP is the company with the highest capitalization, followed by Siemens, whose value is less than 70 billion euros.

2019: €100m sale of SAP shares

In November 2019, Hasso Plattner sold SAP shares in the amount of 100 million euros, but his stake in the share capital of the German enterprise software manufacturer decreased slightly.

In February 2019, Plattner owned a 6.3% stake in SAP, and in November it dropped to 6.2%, Reuters reported, citing documents that the company sent to the regulator.

Hasso Plattner sold €100m worth of SAP shares

As the manager-magazin.de website clarifies, the sale of shares for 100 million euros became known a few days after the completion of the transaction. The reasons for the reduction in Plattner's share in SAP are not named.

Moreover, this decision of the co-founder looks incomprehensible, given that in November 2019 SAP announced plans to return an additional 1.5 billion euros to shareholders in 2020. The company is also going to pay dividends in the amount of at least 40% of profit under IFRS after taxes.

In 2018, SAP paid dividends of €1.5 per share. Then the shareholders received a total of 1.8 billion euros. In the first nine months of 2019, SAP's profit amounted to 1.73 billion euros, which is 28% less than a year ago due to large restructuring costs. For SAP shareholders, a drop in profits means a decline in dividends, so perhaps the sale of shares by Hasso Plattner is associated with a deterioration in the company's financial performance.

On November 22, 2019, the value of SAP shares on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange was 122.68 euros, and the market capitalization was 150.64 billion euros. Based on this rate, Hasso Plattner owns shares of the company (there are about 77 million of them) in the amount of 9.34 billion euros.

SAP management has repeatedly announced its intentions to make the company even more attractive to investors, including by increasing profitability.[1]

2023: Resigning as SAP CEO

With extensive experience as a highly successful CEO of one of the world's largest consulting companies, Punit will be able to bring valuable insights and knowledge to the board. His deep understanding of the needs of our customers and the industry as a whole make him an ideal candidate for chairman, "Plattner said, commenting on Renyen's arrival at SAP.

I'm excited to get a role in SAP - a cult company that plays a key role in the global economy. The company is successfully evolving into an enterprise cloud app leader and bringing to life Hasso Plattner's original vision of helping the world work better and improve people's lives. I am very excited about the opportunity to help shape the future of a company that benefits global business, "Punit Renyen commented on his appointment.

As for Hasso Plattner, he was re-elected to the SAP board in 2022 for a 2-year term, despite the resistance of shareholder representatives, the agency said. Then Plattner promised to introduce his successor at least six months before the end of his term.

By February 24, 2023, Plattner owns a 6.16% stake in SAP, the company's market capitalization is 8.23 billion euros. The businessman announced his intention to remain "an investor [SAP] with an unchanged stake."[2]
