2019: The claim to Apple for illegal arrest by mistake of the system of face recognition

On April 22, 2019 the 18-year-old student from New York Usman Bach filed a lawsuit against Apple for illegal arrest which was executed by police because of an error in the system of face recognition in one of shops of the American corporation.

According to news agency Bloomberg, Usman Bach was arrested in November, 2018. Then the police came to it home and accused of commission of several thefts in Apple Store. Law enforcement agencies in confirmation of the words provided the photo of the suspect. But in the picture, according to Bach, the person, not similar to it, was represented.

The police began arrests on false signals of the systems of face recognition

Besides, the police attributed to the young man theft which was committed in Boston that day when it had an ironclad alibi — Bach was on final to a ball which celebration took place in New York.

Usman Bach told that shortly before detention he lost student's driver's licenses. In them there was no photo, but, according to the claimant, they could appear at this thief and to be used as the identity certificate in Apple shops. As a result the system of face recognition could connect a name of Bach with the malefactor's person by mistake.

Usman Bach submitted a claim to Apple and security company Security Industry Specialists, requiring to exact from them $1 billion. It is not clear yet whether the court will take Usman's part, but as the The New York Post newspaper writes, use of Apple of the software for face recognition in the shops can be compared to "Orwellian" observation, and most of clients do not even know that they are removed.

The systems of face recognition are used by many companies in the USA for search of suspects of thefts. Also many megalopolises start the similar systems for search of criminals on streets and in public transport.[1]
