2023: Closure of the golden visas program

In February 2023, it became known that Portugal is closing the program of "golden visas," under which foreigners can obtain a residence permit in exchange for investments, the purchase of real estate or the creation of new jobs. This was announced by Prime Minister Antonio Costa, EFE reports.

The validity of the documents already issued will be extended only if foreign buyers use real estate as permanent housing for themselves and their descendants, or rent it out for the long term, Costa emphasized.

Gold visas will be mandatory converted into ordinary residence permits.

Then, if the mandatory procedure for the period of stay (at least six months of residence) is not observed, such residence permits will be canceled.

Applications submitted after February 16, 2023 are invalid, and will not be processed.

Previously, investors invested more than $500,000 in the country and could stay only 7 days a year. From Russia alone, the country received $300 million in investments.

2021: D7 visa for financially independent persons and "golden visa"

For 2021, the D7 visa provides an opportunity to become a resident of Portugal and apply for citizenship in the future.

Who can get a D7 visa? Citizens living outside the EU, the European Economic Area and Switzerland, and who have sufficient passive income.

Passive income requirements - EUR 7,620 per year for the main applicant, EUR 3,810 per year - for the spouse (s) of the main applicant and EUR 2,292 per year for each subsequent family member. It is also necessary to rent or own real estate in Portugal.

The visa is popular with investors, entrepreneurs and digital nomads, as well as British pensioners.

There is a requirement for residence in the country. It is necessary to be in Portugal either six months in a row or eight inconsistently.

Initial approval for D7 is issued in about a month. D7 visa holders can apply for citizenship on a common basis after 5 years.

If we talk about the "golden visa" (residence permit through investments from EUR 350,000), then the advantage is the minimum stay in the country - 35 days in 5 years.
