Detecting games with a built-in Trojan

On November 23, 2021, Doctor Web announced the discovery of dozens of games in the AppGallery catalog with a Trojan Android.Cynos.7 built into them, which collects information about users' mobile numbers. Dangerous games were installed by at least 9,300,000 owners of Android devices.

Dozens of games with built-in Trojan found in AppGallery app catalog

According to the company, Android.Cynos.7 is one of the modifications of the Cynos software module, which is designed to be embedded in Android programs in order to monetize them. This platform has been known since at least 2014. Some versions of it have quite aggressive functionality: they send SMS to paid numbers and intercept incoming SMS messages, download and launch various modules, as well as download and install other applications. In the updated version, which was discovered by viral analysts, the main functions were collecting information about users and their mobile devices, as well as displaying ads.

For the Trojan to gain access to certain data, when launching applications from the Android.Cynos.7, users are asked for permission to manage phone calls.

After the permissions are obtained, the Trojan collects and transmits the following information to the remote server:

  • User's mobile phone number
  • location of the device, which is determined on the basis of GPS coordinates or data of the mobile network and Wi-Fi access point (if the application has permission to access location determination);
  • various mobile network parameters, such as a network code, a mobile country code, and, if there are permissions to access the location, a base station identifier and an international location area identifier;
  • various technical characteristics of the device;
  • various parameters from the metadata of the application in which the Trojan is built.

At first glance, leaking information about a mobile number may seem like a minor problem, but in reality it can lead to serious negative consequences for users, especially given the fact that the main target audience for games is children.

Even if the phone number is listed as an adult, the fact of downloading a children's game can most likely indicate that the child is actually using the phone. It is very doubtful that the parents will want to transfer the above data about the child's phone not only to unknown foreign servers, but in general to anyone.

The Trojan collecting phone numbers was Android.Cynos.7 found in 190 games hosted in the AppGallery directory. Among them are various simulators, platformers, arcades, strategies and shooters with the number of installations from several thousand to several million. In total, at least 9,300,000 users downloaded them. Some of them are aimed at the Russian-speaking audience - they have localized Russian-language names and descriptions. Others are for Chinese or international audiences. Examples of games in which this Trojan is built:

  • The game "The team must kill the warhead" with the number of installations over 8000

"The team must kill the warhead"
  • Cat game room with more than 427,000 installs

Cat game room
  • Drive school simulator game with more than 142,000 installs
  • The game 快点躲起来 with more than 2,000,000 installations

Dr.Web has notified Huawei of the identified threats. As of November 23, 2021, all applications containing the Trojan were removed from AppGallery.

Huawei pays developers tens of millions to build apps

In mid-January 2020, it became known that Huawei is starting to pay developers to create applications for the company's operating system - Harmony OS. Thus, the Chinese manufacturer is accelerating the development of its own ecosystem in order to reduce and completely eliminate its dependence on Google services.

Huawei held a conference in London at which it announced the allocation of £20m ($26m) to British and Irish developers creating software for the Huawei App Gallery catalog.

Huawei begins to pay developers to create applications for the company's operating system - Harmony OS

To further attract the interest of developers, Huawei announced that it charges only a 15% commission on sales in the App Gallery, while Apple and Google have it at 30%.

Jamie Gonzalo, vice president of consumer services at Huawei's European division, says the company aims to create a less intrusive ecosystem of applications compared to those run by Silicon Valley IT giants. To do this, for example, Huawei promises less "spam" in the form of notifications.

File:Aquote1.png
It's very good in terms of privacy. Advertising is not important to us, "he said.
File:Aquote2.png

Jamie Gonzalo added that developers will be able to advertise their apps on the home screens of custom smartphones. In what form this will be implemented, he did not specify.

By the beginning of 2020, there are about 600 million active users of Huawei mobile devices in more than 170 countries, 68 million of which live in Europe. So far, most Huawei smartphones run on the open version of Android, but the company plans to transfer its equipment to Harmony OS. One of the company's executives said that the platform will be fully ready for installation on all devices by mid-2020.[3]

2019: Huawei rushed to fill with apps after disconnecting from Android

On June 10, 2019, it became known that Huawei began pushing software developers to host its Huawei AppGallery products. The Chinese company began to actively expand the range of its app store after Google blocked it from accessing the official version of Android with built-in Google services, including Google Play.

Huawei has begun sending letters to developers offering to join the AppGallery community, which, according to the company, has a monthly audience of 270 million users. It is also noted that 560 thousand developers create their products for this catalog, and the number of smartphones with access to AppGallery is measured at 350 million.

Huawei rushed to fill its Google Play counterpart with apps after disconnecting from Android

The developer is promised "full support" in exchange for agreeing to join Huawei's web store, but it is difficult to understand what help is being discussed. The company only indicates that developers can get free access to the Huawei Developer portal.

File:Aquote1.png
To ensure the smooth use of your application by our users, Huawei undertakes to provide you with full support and help place your application in the AppGallery, the letter says to one of the developers (an excerpt from it is provided by the XDA Developers website).
File:Aquote2.png

Meanwhile, it remains incomprehensible for developers of mobile applications to be banned from working with Huawei. On the one hand, they do not sell technology to a Chinese company, on the other hand, applications are monetized through Google advertising tools (which means that this monetization scheme will not be available) and through purchases/payments within applications.

On August 19, 2019, the postponement of sanctions will end, after which the new Android smartphones Huawei will not have Google services.[4]

2018: The number of developers registered on Huawei AppGallery reached 560,000

Huawei on June 20, 2019 announced that it continues to develop its own Huawei AppGallery, which became available to Russian users at the end of 2018.

Monthly active audience in 2018 reached 262 million users, exceeding the previous year's figure by 117%. The share of young users aged 18 to 34 increased by 8.3% over the year. The store offers users a wide range of applications and content that undergo a thorough four-level security check.

To support developers, Huawei offers full adaptation and expert technical support, open access to an automated test lab and performance optimization system for Huawei devices. In addition, the company regularly conducts marketing promotions designed to help developers promote their products.

In 2018, the number of app developers registering on Huawei's platform grew by 60% to reach 560,000. In addition, in 2018, the share of individual developers increased by 11%, reaching 29% of their total number.
