On April 17, 2019 Microsoft announced the cloud service of Azure Government Secret intended for storage of the most confidential state data. It is about information which corresponds to the sixth level of influence (Impact Level 6, IL6) — to the highest safety certificate in classification of the U.S. Department of Defense.
Still Amazon was the only technology company having accreditation of IL6 which grants the right to process the most confidential data of the Pentagon. Having undergone similar certification, Microsoft will be able to compete on equal terms to Amazon for the cloud contract of the Ministry of Defence for $10 billion. Until the end of April, 2019 department will select the winner who will transfer all data of the Pentagon to uniform cloud infrastructure. Amazon and Microsoft remained the only thing applicants for this tender.
According to the statement of Microsoft, for work of Azure Government Secret, two data centers which are in the territory of the USA and constructed taking into account requirements of IL6 and also the directive from the head of the national intelligence are used. At the same time by April 17, 2019 these DPCs still are officially not accredited by the U.S. Government to work with top secret information.
The request of Microsoft is considered, and during this period clients can test Azure Government Secret in an individual order. The company did not specify when it is going to receive necessary certificates. In October, 2018 Microsoft said that it will be able to make it by the end of the first quarter of the 2019th.
Meanwhile, Microsoft reported that all six regions where there are data centers servicing the Azure Government platform, have certificates of Impact Level 5.[1]
