2020: Submission of Service Router Linux Nokia OS (SR Linux)

On July 9, 2020 the Nokia company announced emergence of network operating system (Network Operating System, NOS) and intuitive work benches for automation and operation of networks. As a result the cloud companies and owners of data centers will be able to scale the resources and to adapt them in the conditions of the continuous exponential growth of traffic and fast changings caused by emergence of such technologies as a 5G and Industry 4.0. SR Linux of NOS and the service Fabric Service Platform (FSP) Nokia platform were created in cooperation with the world web companies, including with Apple company which already set this technology in the DPCs.

Nokia submitted the Service Router Linux Nokia operating system (SR Linux)

Nokia noted that in the conditions of increase in demand for cloud applicaions and such technologies as artificial intelligence, machine learning, the changed and virtual reality, providers of cloud services need the high level of customization and flexibility for the network components necessary for operation and monitoring all of new and new data centers.

Network operating systems do not cope. Though the traditional systems also develop, they remain limited. It is difficult to customize, integrate and automate them. Operating systems have very limited opportunities for customization and even in case of success need compound and skillful integration. At the same time old applications often it is necessary to compile again every time when the supplier of network operating system creates new release. Open operating systems did not reach maturity level yet, it is difficult to bring them into operation, and possibilities of their scaling are not checked in practice yet, emphasized in Nokia.

According to the developer, the SR Nokia operating system is the network operating system based on microservices. The developer kit of SR Linux NDK (NetOps Development Kit) represents tool kit for programming with necessary functionality. Applications are easily integrated using modern tools, such as gRPC (call of remote procedures) and protobuf without rekompilyation, without restrictions on programming languages and without unnecessary dependences. Besides, SR Linux inherits checked in practice internet-protocols Nokia from the operating system for service routers (Service Router Operating System, SROS) which proved in a series of routers of Nokia of an operator class. SR Linux is a flexible open environment for development of network applications.

"We consider automation of data processing centers the basic technology which is the cornerstone of our cloud telecommunication model. The solution of Nokia for network factory in DPC will maintain complete programmability and deep telemetry. In combination with modern tools it will expand possibilities of automation and scaling of our communication cloud that it is important for support of future services of a 5G",

'Neil McRae, the chief architect of BT Group emphasized'

"We are glad that Nokia enters the market of networks for DPC, with care, usual for it, offering open, well scalable operating system which is under construction on the basis of the systems of IP routing working in networks worldwide. Nokia offers the platform which network specialists can easily adapt for application development, necessary for fast promotion without control loss forward",

'Muhammad Durrani, the senior director of division of a network architecture, Equinix noted'

"We found out that the modern environment of data centers is insufficiently transparent. The insufficient transparency and openness of this Wednesday does not allow to support absolute automation which is necessary for scaling of our transactions without inflating of states. Nokia offers distributed networks of DPC other level of thoroughness and creativity which we so need",

'Richard Petrie, the executive director on technologies and the chief executive of LINX considers'

"Nokia – one of the partners supporting our transport network connecting data processing centers in the Netherlands. Nokia understands present and future requirements of the hosting companies. The transparency and openness of the SR Linux Nokia platform supports possibilities of automation which are sufficient for building and scaling of our transactions for the years ahead",

'Mark van Teunenbroek, the founder and the managing director of team.blue/nl, team.blue, the hosting company noted'

"Requirements of the modern Internet companies to switching and routing in DPC at all not such, as five years ago. Nokia delivered the checked software tools of routing on completely open, well scalable basis and created network operating system, the platform of automation and switching for data centers. All this meets requirements of the Internet companies which need the unlimited scale, flexibility and support artificial intelligence. Nokia continues to expand family of cloud products in the market of switching and routing for DPC which volume, by estimates of 650 Group, by 2024 will exceed 17 dollars USA billion Telecom operators and the enterprises will receive benefit from this cloud solution for many years",

'Alan Weckel, the founder and the analyst of research company 650 Group noted'

"Having long-term experience of cooperation with operators, we understand the engineering tasks connected with construction and operation of crucial IP networks on a global scale. We also understand that modern data processing centers have the specific operational features. The project of SR Linux was started with a clean slate and from partner interaction with Apple and other companies. As a result we received the design capable to solve the current and future problems",

'Basil Alwan, the president of department of IP-and optical networks, Nokia noted'

According to the statement of the developer, the SR Linux Nokia operating system is constructed based on the Internet protocol which is used in the solution SROS Nokia. This system compatible to any hardware and working at a basis of standard Linux OS, has the architecture supporting management on the basis of models, stream transfer of detailed telemetry and uses modern interfaces, such as gRPC and protobuf that facilitates programming, increases transparency and increases controllability of all applications. The developer kit (NDK) allowing specialists to create new applications and tools in any programming language is applied to this operating system.

As of July, 2020 the product of SR Linux is already available.
