XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol is the extensible messaging protocol and information on presence), earlier known as Jabber ([ˈʤ æb ə (r)], Jabber — "chatter", "chatter", "gibberish") — based in XML, open, the protocol, free for use, for instant messaging and information on presence at the mode, close to a real-time mode. Initially designed easily expanded, the protocol, in addition to text messaging, supports voice transmission, video and files on network.

Unlike the commercial systems of instant exchange of messages, such as AIM ICQ, MSN and Yahoo, XMPP is the decentralized, expanded and open system. Anyone can open the server of instant exchange of messages, register on it users and interact with other XMPP servers. On the basis of the XMPP protocol the set of the private and corporate XMPP servers is already open. Among them there are rather large projects, such as Google Talk, LiveJournal and Gizmo5.

The XMPP/Jabber protocol such popular services of instant messages as QIP Infium, "Ya. Online" support, Pidgin (WindowsLinux//Mac), Adium (Mac), Miranda (Windows) and some other.

History

2019: IETF recognized architecture of Cisco XMPP-Grid the official Internet standard

Within several years the Cisco company works on creation of the standards capable to facilitate and increase efficiency of data exchange between different platforms. In June, 2019 Cisco moved ahead in this field when Engineering council of the Internet (Internet Engineering Task Force, IETF) accepted[1] the architecture of XMPP-Grid developed by the company as the official Internet standard for safe information exchange.

Protocol implementation of Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) from Cisco company is the cornerstone of the Cisco Platform Exchange Grid platform (pxGrid) allowing the solutions of security of different vendors used at the enterprise to exchange data among themselves. Before emergence of pxGrid in specialists of IT departments there was practically no opportunity to obtain information of about tens of used solutions of security in one place.

Implementation of the XMPP-Grid standard from Cisco (pxGrid) is available through Cisco Identity Services Engine. As the approved IETF of the pxGrid Internet standard helps to increase efficiency used at the enterprise the practician on information security support. Thanks to this standard of the solution of security of different producers will be able to work together, providing reliable protection[2].

2017: Spammers are ready to save from undesirable mailing for $25

In July, 2017 the spam All Base resource disappearing in the Darknet began to offer "service" in disposal of spam: for 25 dollars promise the victims immunity from the garbage messages sent through the XMPP protocol (the former Jabber). [3]

Long time spam through this protocol was rather insignificant problem. But for the last months by July, 2017 the intensity of mailings sharply increased, and All Base played in it a key role. Through it unprecedented amounts of the garbage advertizing promoting mainly various cybercriminal services and illegal products - from stolen details of payment cards and the malware to drugs are pumped over.

Spammers take money from clients for spam sending and from the victims for its termination

Persons interested to order spam campaign should lay out 0.04 bitcoins that approximately corresponds to one hundred dollars. Spam will be directed to owners of identifiers of the XMPP messengers collected from open sources, i.e. from IRC chats and external network.

The victims of spammers can receive more than 150 messages a day. It is completely possible to be protected from it or through change of the identifier, or through blocking of messages from all who do not enter your contact list. There is also one more option: pay 25 dollars to owners of All Base for removal of your identifier from base of a resource.

Spammers suggest to pay them for solution which they created, - i.e. it is about direct racket, - Georgy Lagoda, the CEO of SEC Consult Services company says. - The scheme is extremely similar to that that is used by unfair media at a sneer company and the publication of invited papers. Practice when the person involved in article is deleted for a while is known and again include in similar items on the portal or partner media. In that case Chief Editors of publishing houses offer removal from bases with blocking on the person involved for a year. The cost of such services usually several times above simple removal. There is a probability that similar offers can be expected also from spam networks and, naturally, nobody guarantees that removal will be permanent. Racketeers should not pay categorically.

The XMPP protocol is very popular in a cyberunderground, especially among especially technically advanced users. The preference of messengers is explained its basis by powerful enciphering. For the same reason XMPP are used by civic activists and human rights activists where OpenComs pose threat for life.

Earlier in 2017 someone published nearly 18 thousand identifiers XMPP in open access. Most likely, spammers will try to use it.

2005

In August, 2005 Google provided Talk Google service — a combination of VoIP and the client for message exchange, the using XMPP for correspondence functions and also as a basis for voice transmission and files. Initial start of service from Google did not include cross-server communication, but by January 17, 2006 such feature was added.

2001

Since August, 2001 the Jabber protocol passes under control of Jabber Software Foundation (on January 16, 2007 Jabber Software Foundation was renamed into XMPP Standards Foundation), for more exact description of the work of development of expansions actually of the protocol, unlike the line of development of the program with the name of the same name.

Jabber, Inc. is engaged in development of two projects — Jabber Extensible Communications Platform (Jabber XCP) and JabberNow. The first is a framework, and the second — the hardware-software solution (specially assembled and configured computer). The website jabber.org still functions. Investors of the Jabber project are Jona, Inc., France Telecom, Intel Capital, and Webb Interactive Services, Inc.

1999

The Jabber project was based by Jeremy Miller at the beginning of 1998 from development of the jabberd server. The first message about the project appeared on January 4, 1999 on Slashdot. Soon after that several main developers who began to work on the jabberd server, clients for Windows and GNU/Linux and also gateways in main systems of IM joined the project (AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo). Later, in 1999, Webb Interactive Services began to sponsor the main developers that accelerated process of creation of the project. At that time there were principles of the Jabber protocol and also the jabberd server and early clients, such as WinJab (became outdated and gained the development in Exodus) and Gabber. This early period of permanent changes ended in May, 2000 with release of jabberd 1.0.

The early Jabber protocol created bases for the XMPP standard published as RFC 3920. Often this moment is considered as the beginning of rivalry with SIMPLE based on the SIP protocol as standard protocol for instant messaging and information on presence.
