IBM PureData

Product
The name of the base system (platform): IBM PureSystems (expert integrated systems)
Developers: IBM
Technology: BI

IBM presented on October 9, 2012 the third boxed solution from the PureSystems family for the analysis of Big Data. The product received the name PureData.

The company claims that the product is intended for processing more than one thousand simultaneous requests according to the analysis and data processing. The organizations in all industries are faced by a difficult problem of search of easy and cost-efficient ways of data analysis, achievement of deeper understanding of a consumer customer behavior, management of outflow of clients, holding information and capacious marketing campaigns and identification of the facts of fraud in real time. To help the organizations with the solution of these problems, IBM offers the PureData System system which is available in three models optimized for different types of workloads: transaction and operational analytics and also analysis of Big Data.

PureData System is another step forward on the way of implementation of general strategy of IBM on delivery to the organizations of systems with the built-in expert knowledge which makes use of the experience of IBM accumulated decades for reduction of IT costs and reduction of the complexity connected with information technologies. Customers receive a system which can be set and started in work in 24 hours, but not in 24 days and which carries out difficult analytical tasks in minutes, but not for hours, supporting more than 100 databases on one system.

By estimates of IBM, daily in the world 2.5 exabytes of data are generated; more than 90% of all data existing today in the world were created in the last two years. In the conditions of such surplus of information clients can use the new IBM PureData System system for the high-performance information services working in traditional and cloud computing environments. The new systems are constructed on a reference platform of the PureSystems systems using which it is possible to develop web applications less than in 10 days – a task on which at least 6 months left earlier. The PureSystems family is result of 2-billion investments into Research and Development and acquisitions performed by IBM within four years.

Main directions

IBM selects three main areas of work of a new system:

  • The analytics which is built in operational examination. This component module can be built in the system of the client as the separate solution. Netezza technologies for management of data arrays and high-performance analytics are used. The module has more than 200 functions for data analysis by various criteria.
  • Integration and optimization of the systems of the software, servers, storage systems and supply line filters. In the module the patented data filtering together with a programmable hardware complex is applied to superfast accomplishment of advanced queries, without the need for preserving of indicators, units or other indicators.
  • Simplification of process from design before maintenance of systems. The module will be ready to work within an hour from the moment of assembly. The simplified integration with complexes and software of other vendors. End-to-end system of management and updating.

Specifications

The following technical characteristics of a product are given in documentation of IBM:

  • PuraData is founded on technology of storage and data processing of IBM Netezza Platform Software 7 above.
  • A system supports the next Wednesdays: SQL, OLE DB, ODBC 3.5, JDBC 3.0 Type 4.
  • Programming languages: Java, Python, R *, Fortran, C/C ++, Perl, Lua.
  • SQL standards: SQL-92 compliant and SQL-99 extensions
  • The Netezza platform supports In-Database Analytics, R *, Matrix, MapReduce, Geospatial technology and ESRI support.
  • High-speed loading became possible thanks to integration of the ETL and EAI settings.
  • The backup of systems is possible thanks to integration of IBM® Tivoli®, EMC Legato and Symantec

Netbackup.

  • integration with software packages of other vendors is possible: IBM DB2®, Informix®, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle,

Red Brick, Sybase IQ, Teradata.

  • The operating system of the platform - Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 5.

Competitive advantages

IBM compares PureData with products of Oracle, in particular with Exadata X2-2/. according to the report of IBM on comparison of two platforms, the giant direvsifitsirovat a product on six versions for work as in the most small enterprises with need of modest functionality, and for large calculations. IBM considers that it will be one of the most important advantages in competitive struggle with products of Oracle which offer the smaller number of versions of the products.

IBM represents three PureData System models optimized for different types of workloads:

  • PureData System for Transactions (PureData System for transaction processing) is Spheres of retail and service using credit cards for payment of products and services depend on fast transaction processing and interactions. These transactions can be small in itself, however their quantity and frequency require high-speed and effective computing environments. A new system provides the hardware and program configurations integrated and optimized for achievement of the high levels of flexibility, security, integrity of data, readiness and scalability when processing any transaction workloads.
  • PureData System for Analytics (PureData System for analytics) is the Modern organizations which aim to save competitiveness, should have capability quickly and with ease to analyze and study Big Data even if they deal with petabyte volumes. A new system simplifies infrastructure and optimizes performance of services of data warehouses and analytical applications. The new PureData System for Analytics founded on Netezza technology and designed to accelerate accomplishment of the analysis uses in the structure the largest of the libraries of the analytic functions integrated into the database presented today at the market. Customers can use this functionality for operational forecasting and warning of potential outflow of clients, prevention of cases of fraud and also for development of targeted advertizing campaigns and promotion actions on the basis of results of the predictive and space analysis.
  • To PureData System for Operational Analytics (PureData System for operational analytics) — a New system can provide information, valuable and applicable in practice, for the purpose of a first line support of decision making for more than 1000 business operations at the same time. The operational systems are applied to identification of cases of fraud during processing of credit cards, to providing valuable knowledge of clients to call centers and also used for tracking and forecasting of changes of indicators of consumption in networks of the energy companies and municipal services.
