Branches: Internet services

Internet Explorerbrowser delivered by corporation Microsoft complete with operating system Windows. Internet Explorer 1.0 was issued in August, 1995 on the basis of the browser Spyglass, Inc Mosaic. Microsoft licensed the browser on the terms of quarter payments plus percent from sales. Eventually the appearance of the browser changed, such functions as were gradually added: a multimedia panel, integration with Windows Messenger, automatic correction of image size, a download manager, the system of page-by-page tabs, a search pane, blocking of pop-up windows and banners and so on.

In 2015 after nearly 20 years of use of the Internet Explorer browser the Microsoft company refused its embedding in Windows OS. It was relied on the new Microsoft Edge browser

Use indicators: 25% of the PC in the world

According to data of analytical service NetMarketShare for December, 2015, Internet Explorer 11 is installed on 25.57% of personal computers worldwide. The share of all versions of the browser of Microsoft made 48.57%, having for the first time fallen below a 50 percent mark.

2019: Microsoft: Internet Explorer is not the browser, stop to use it by default

In February, 2019 Microsoft asked to cease to consider Internet Explorer the browser and to use it by default in computers. This program became only "the solution for ensuring compatibility" of outdated websites which need to be updated for modern Internet observers.

As the global director of cyber security of the company Chris Jackson wrote in the blog of Microsoft, corporate clients should not use Internet Explorer for all the web traffic even if it is difficult to some organizations to refuse this product.

Microsoft asked to cease to consider Internet Explorer the browser and to use it by default in computers
Microsoft asked to cease to consider Internet Explorer the browser and to use it by default in computers

Such companies, according to Jackson, are forced to undertake "technical obligations", including to pay for expanded support of outdated software, but in a case with Internet Explorer such habit should be eradicated. About it it is written in the message with the heading "Dangers of Use of Internet Explorer as the Browser by Default".

The main essence of an argument of Jackson is that the companies should use selectively Internet Explorer only for the websites which need this browser. For example, the Enterprise Mode Site List tool for Internet Explorer 11 which provides the best compatibility of the web applications created for older versions of the browser can interest some. This function allows the enterprises much more simply and with essential smaller costs to upgrade to new versions of Windows

At the same time Chris Jackson does not urge to use the Edge browser or the competing products, like Chrome or Firefox.

I here not to impose any browser to someone. Windows provides you the choice, and you should select that browser which best of all corresponds to your requirements — he noted, having added that many developers ceased to test the websites under Internet Explorer.[1]

2016: Termination of support of Internet Explorer 10

On January 12, 2016 Microsoft stopped support of all the version of the Internet Explorer browser, except the last. It is reported on the official site of the American corporation [2].

Completion of support provides lack of updates for  a security system, other updates, services of a free and  paid support  and also updates of technical data on  the Internet — reported in Microsoft.

Since January 12, 2016, from the producer users only Internet Explorer 11 (only for platforms Windows 7, Windows 8.1 i Windows 10) and the new Edge browser will be able to get official support. Security updates and technical support are not provided for Internet Explorer 10 and older versions of the web observer of Microsoft.

Microsoft stopped support of versions of Internet Explorer below the last

On January 12, 2016 Microsoft released the last update for Internet Explorer at number KB3123303 which among other began to recommend to users to replace the browser with more relevant.

Earlier Microsoft refused use of Internet Explorer as the browser by default in the Windows 10 operating system. Now this status has the Microsoft Edge browser developed within the Spartan project. This program allows to take hand-written notes in  a browser window, offers a special read mode, has integration into the voice  Cortana assistant, provides quick access to  favorites, loadings, the list for reading , etc.

Declaration of terms of a stop of updates of old versions of Internet Explorer

After January 12, 2016 only the latest version of Internet Explorer will get support, updates and security patches, Microsoft reported. The users using Internet Explorer 8, 9 or 10 on Windows 7 SP1 should migrate on Intetnet Explorer 11 to continue to get support[3].

Internet Explorer (2015) logo

In the Windows 10 operating system the main browser - Edge though Internet Explorer also is available to compatibility in a system. Developers stake on Edge, in the long term, therefore the fastest transition of users to it - an important task.

Microsoft will not be possible to get rid of Internet Explorer at once and it is necessary to work step by step. The first older versions of the browser will disappear. On January 12, 2016 support of IE of versions to the 9th on Windows Vista SP2 will be stopped, and on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 only IE 11 will be supported. Other versions will cease to receive security updates.

In the browser Edge, Microsoft, having refused low technologies, increased work performance. But it lacks functionality. Partly for this reason of Edge is not in demand for users.

HP was found by vulnerability in Internet Explorer, and Microsoft refused to eliminate it

On June 25, 2015 it became known of disclosure of parts of the vulnerability detected in the 32-bit version of the Internet Explorer 11 browser by HP company. The company published data as Microsoft refused to eliminate "hole" though paid $125 thousand to the specialists who detected it[4].

Specialists of HP in February, 2015 detected vulnerability. It allows a bypass of Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR, the technology applied in operating systems when which using the arrangement in a process address space of important structures in a random way changes) and to get access to RAM of the computer.

Microsoft decided not to release a patch for the browser, explaining the actions by the small number of users of the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer 11 and labor input of process of use of vulnerability.

HP, in turn, made the decision - to notify users on possible danger, and published results of the researches after the 120-day term of nondisclosure of information (according to requirements Microsoft). Remuneration from Microsoft HP offered on scientific and educational programs.

In March, 2015 Microsoft confirmed officially the gradual termination of existence of Internet Explorer - it still exists in some versions of Windows 10, for the enterprises, but the new project - Project Spartan will become the main method of access to web pages to Windows 10, in April, 2015 he received the name Microsoft Edge.

From April 22, 2015 to June 22, 2015 Microsoft carried out the program for search of vulnerabilities in the new browser for all comers, having appointed a prize for finding of a bug from $500 to $15 thousand. Results are not published yet.

Microsoft will refuse Internet Explorer

On March 17, 2015 it became known of the forthcoming parting of Microsoft and Internet Explorer: in the next version of Windows 10 the new built-in browser[5] will appear[5].

Internet Explorer worked in Windows OS of nearly 20 years.

Microsoft will refuse the Internet Explorer brand, the representative of the company on Microsoft Convergence action which is taking place in the USA said. The company began to look for the new name for the browser which will be built in the Windows 10 operating system.

Internet Explorer will remain in some editions Windows 10 mainly intended for corporate use (it is going to release a system in 2015). Microsoft will save it in order that in the companies there were no problems with compatibility. However, starting with Windows 10 users will go on-line using the built-in browser, and he will not bear the name Internet Explorer.

Development of the new browser is conducted under the code name Spartan. Information on it for the first time appeared in December, 2014. According to statements of the speaker of the company, Microsoft is not going to do the code name Spartan by the commercial name of a product.

In spite of the fact that the latests version of the web browser at Microsoft turned out quite good, their adequate assessment was interfered by the negative which is saved up for many years existence of Internet Explorer 6. The choice of a new name will be able possibly to help the modern browser to separate from the negative past.

Internet Explorer is a weak link of Windows

On January 26, 2016 the ESET company published the analysis of cyber attacks to software products of Microsoft for 2014 according to which the greatest number of the vulnerabilities closed by Microsoft in the products were the share of the Internet Explorer browser of versions 6-11 – 243 vulnerabilities[6].

Number of the vulnerabilities closed in 2014, 2014

Number of the vulnerabilities corrected in 2014 in comparison with 2013, 2014

The closed vulnerabilities belong to the "remote code execution" type and were used by malefactors for the hidden installation of the malware on computers of users. A number of the closed vulnerabilities in products of Microsoft was operated in harmful campaigns, including so-called state-sponsored of the attack (cyber weapon).

In particular, fall of 2014 specialists ESET provided these researches of a trojan BlackEnergy. It was used for theft of these corporate users from countries of Eastern Europe and Windows Vista Windows 7 Windows 8 8.1 RT extended using 0day-vulnerability of CVE-2014-4114 in operating systems, and.

"In 2014 Microsoft implemented in Internet Explorer and other products a number of innovations for the purpose of increase in security, – Artem Baranov, the leading virus analyst of ESET noted. – Nevertheless, the virus laboratory ESET already repeatedly announced need of use of the Enhanced Protected Mode mode for IE, especially together with the 64-bit version of Windows 8.1. It will allow to raise significantly security bar when using these products".

The mode of the Enterprise is Enterprise mode

On April 2, 2014 the Microsoft company provided Mode of the Enterprise for Internet Explorer 11, it improves compatibility of the web applications created for older versions of the browser. The mode of the Enterprise will help the companies more simply and considerably smaller costs to upgrade Windows OS to new versions.

The new "Mode of the enterprise" will be available to users immediately after installation of the last update Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. As declares vendor, corporate users will estimate advantages of support of modern web standards, performance and the increased security of Internet Explorer 11, without stopping justifying the investments made in the previous web applications. The new Internet Explorer mode will significantly simplify for the companies updating to the latest version of the operating system Windows 8.1 meeting all requirements of modern business.

"The mode of the enterprise" offers full compatibility of the new browser with Internet Explorer 8 preset in Windows 7 OS that will allow the companies to leave from need of the choice of the new applications and services supporting modern web standards - HTML5, CSS3 and uses of the old web applications created for the previous versions of Internet Explorer.

After setup of the list of outdated web applications and the websites the mode will automatically join at the address to them. The IT service of the company can easily configure the list of the websites which will be displayed in Mode of the Enterprise using XML-lists or groups. Using editors group the politician the IT specialist will be able to disconnect or turn on Mode of the Enterprise, to transfer it to "manual mode", automatically to make the list of the websites which require use of the Enterprise-mode (using the new Enterprise Mode Site List Manager tool) and also to use lists of the websites using this mode for different divisions of the company or user groups.

Internet Explorer 11 in Mode of the Enterprise saves speed and smoothness of display of the websites, a possibility of use hardware the acceleration and other advantages purchased by the browser of Microsoft for the last 5 years starts web applications much quicker, than IE8.

Main advantages of "The mode of the enterprise" for Internet Explorer 11

  • Differences in the user agent. In Mode of the Enterprise IE11 correctly interacts with the websites and web applications using outdated types and versions of the browser, even with those from them which do not work if the browser other than IE8 is used.
  • ActiveX and other controls. "The mode of the Enterprise" responds to the requests for the version of the browser similar to IE8.
  • Outdated functions of the browser. "The mode of the Enterprise" allows to use outdated functions of the browser in IE11, in particular CSS Expressions for dynamic placement of objects on the page.
  • Preliminary rendering and caching. In Mode of the Enterprise the technology of rendering and caching is disconnected as this technology can become the reason of incorrect display of pages during the work with outdated web services.
  • Page display. In Mode of the Enterprise IE11, as well as IE8, fixes compatibility issues and widespread problems of the websites designed for older versions of the browser (for example, Internet Explorer 7) using emulation.

The number of "holes" in Internet Explorer since the beginning of year grew by 100%

Since the beginning of 2014 more vulnerabilities, than for all last year were found in the Internet Explorer web browser of Microsoft corporation. It follows from the report of the Bromium Labs company issuing solutions for protection of corporate networks.

Internet Explorer is in the lead among other popular browsers by amount of the vulnerabilities found in the first half of 2014. And is ahead of them on this indicator many times — approximately twice Mozilla Firefox and approximately by 2.5 times of Google Chrome.

Even in Adobe Flash technology which analysts call the most favourite among hackers in the first half of this year about 8 times less vulnerabilities, than were found in Internet Explorer.

It can say, odnko, not that Internet Explorer became worse in respect of security, and that Microsoft began to pay more attention to search of vulnerabilities in it.

The fact that Microsoft began to spend more time for security of Internet Explorer is confirmed by other statistical value — according to the same Bromium Labs, for several years the corporation significantly reduced average time between detection of vulnerability in Internet Explorer and release of a patch. If in 2011 for IE9 this time was over 90 days, then for IE11 in 2013 — about 5 days.

Also independent analysts began to show higher interest in security of Internet Explorer. According to researchers, in the first half of 2014 on the Internet there were descriptions of 11 exploits for the web browser of Microsoft corporation, only 2 exploits for Adobe Flash and at the same time any exploit to Firefox and Chrome.

Overview of opportunities Internet Explorer 10

On March 14, 2012 in the English-language version of the blog Building Windows 8, to the devoted process of creation of new generation of OS of "all times and the people", Microsoft published very extensive article about new opportunities of Internet Explorer 10. To it the fate to work as a part of Windows 8 and to support the new Metro graphical interface is prepared. Material contains a set of colourful screenshots and video demonstrations.

At this time the release of OS was expected later in 2012 (Microsoft since February 29 offers consumer preview release), the Metro interface should become a prerogative of mobile devices with the touch screen, at the same time, desktop PCs with the big screen and the usual keyboard and a mouse will be able to work with its more traditional version.

According to the author of a post, Rob Mauceri, the head of group of the Internet Explorer program, programmers of Microsoft cardinally changed architecture and significantly processed the Internet browser engine. First of all, for the purpose of performance improvement and ensuring compatibility with a large number of standards, including HTML5. In particular, in Microsoft claim what on the speed of rendering of the normal Internet Explorer 10 web pages will be able to be equal to indicators, to the inherent most facilitated mobile websites. It means that users even on desktop computers and notebooks will feel "lightness" and speed inherent in a mobile brauzing.

Support of Metro provides, first of all, display of contents of web pages in the full-screen mode. Governing bodies in the new interface will appear only as required and to disappear if they are not necessary. For example, it concerns tabs – they are displayed only "on demand" the user. For filling of forms on devices with the touch screen the pop-up keyboard, the built-in check of spelling, searching tools of text fragments are provided.

In IE10 each pixel of the screen is used for display of the web page

The closest competitors Google Mozilla are also busy with development of the versions of browsers Chrome and Firefox according to support of the Windows 8 Metro graphical interface.

Internet Explorer 10 recognized the greatest number of the harmful websites, having issued the corresponding warning, in comparison with all other popular browsers. IE10 also quicker than other browsers defines again appeared malicious URLs. Such conclusion contains in the report of NSS Labs research company.

The research took place from March 13 to April 9, 2013. The efficiency of protection of web browsers was tested on 754 malicious URLs. At the same time researchers visited the same harmful websites repeatedly. In total over 18 thousand tests were the share of each browser. The used operating system - Microsoft Windows 8 Enterprise.

IE10 prodemonstirovat the most effective protection, having detected malicious URLs in 99.96% cases. On the second place - Google Chrome 25/26 which showed efficiency of 83.16%. The Safari 5 and Firefox 19 web browsers took respectively the third and fourth places with indicators of 10.15% and 9.92%. Opera 12 could detect malicious URLs in 1.87% cases.

"Thus, Firefox and Safari will block approximately on one of each ten attacks. It means that the antivirus installed on the user computer should intercept other nine attacks. Chrome will protect from eight of ten attacks, and Internet Explorer 10 will miss only four attacks from one thousand. Users of the Opera browser are almost deprived of protection", - contains in the report of NSS Labs.

Specialists added that in all cases browsers issue warning that the website can do harm to the computer, however allow to overcome this protection. Therefore the actual level of protection can be lower. Besides, researchers specified that the difference in above the given indicators of browsers is not linear.

IE9 share - 11.6%

For February 6, 2012 the IE9 browser share in the world makes 11.6% of all browsers for desktop operating systems. The IE8 which is released in 2009 and not having means of protecting from tracking holds the share which is twice exceeding IE9 share.

2011: Google Chrome pressed IE

Internet Explorer was not succeeded to save the share in the market of browsers as Google Chrome received a significant part of consumer audience. According to data of Net Applications, during 2011 all versions of IE reduced the share by 7.4% of point, at the same time Chrome increased the share by 8.8% for the same period.

20 million downloads of IE9 for 2010

The Microsoft corporation summed up the results of development of the Internet Explorer 9 Beta web browser for 2010. The public beta of the program was downloaded by 20 million users. At the same time at the end of summer of beta testers it was 20 times less – about 1 million people (versions were available to developers), and after public beta release the quantity them grew to 2.5 million. According to statistical company Net Applications, the share of Internet activity of the users in the world using Internet Explorer 9 Beta in September, 2010 made 0.12%, in October – 0.32%, in November – 0.38% and in December – 0.46%.

For comparison (the same data source) – previous (and the last today stable) the version of the web observer from Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 grew more dynamically – Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1, provided in March, 2008 to the general public, gained 0.05% of Internet traffic by the time of release of the second version, and the second beta in 5 weeks of fall of 2008 increased this indicator to 0.61%.

Start of Internet Explorer 9

On September 15, 2010, Microsoft released the first official beta of the Internet Explorer 9 browser open for downloading for everyone. It is possible to download the beta of Internet Explorer 9 on the separate website [] which is specially started for this purpose.

First of all significant changes in IE9 interface in comparison with the previous versions rush to eyes: developers removed all excess menus and buttons from the interface, having left only a field for the web page address, a search line and several simple buttons therefore the browser began to resemble more the main competitors - Firefox and Chrome.

Earlier developers already noted that the maximum increase in a free space for display of web pages and reduction of the size of the interface of the program was their purpose within work on IE9. The main difference between IE9, Firefox and Chrome in appearance of a top panel of the browser consists in arrangement of tabs with open web pages: if at Firefox they are located below a line with the address, and at Chrome - above, then in IE9 pages are placed near the address and search that allowed to release a maximum of space for content of the page. Call keys of the menu of the browser, the list of tabs and the history of the visited web pages are located in the screen upper right corner.

New features Except changes in the interface, representatives of Microsoft announced a number of new features which should increase considerably the speed of operation of the browser and its security. So, for better reproduction of web graphics not the processor of the computer, but its graphic accelerator is used now. As developers, thanks to this innovation note, web pages open much quicker and are processed by a system as the applications installed directly on the computer. At the same time, use of GPU allows to release cores of CPU for more important tasks. Besides, creators of IE9 announced about significantly the improved support HTML5 and CSS3 and also increase in speed of work of JavaScript at the expense of the new engine under the name Chakra. Support API- the 2D and DirectWrite API Direct functions is noted.
"The updated own model of documents (document object model - DOM) in Internet Explorer 9 allows to increase significantly speed, interacting with Chakra, the new JavaScript engine more effectively. Chakra is able to process the code several parallel flows, using advantages of several cores of CPU. Though all these changes are considerable in itself, together they do operation of the browser very fast", said in the statement of software giant.

In the beta of the browser there was a Pinned Sites function which allows to get access to the chosen websites of the user directly through a control panel the Windows 7 system needlessly before it to open the browser.

The beta of the browser works only on operating systems Windows Vista or Windows 7, without support of earlier Windows XP. Also users should replace with it the current version of Internet Explorer.

Integration of Download Manager into the SmartScreen Filter filter for the first time provided to IE8 as the tool for protection against the harmful websites became important improvement of security of the browser. This functionality is automatically verified with the list of phishing sites and pages with a malicious code, warning the user in case of their visit.

Integration with Download Manager allows to remove unnecessary warnings in case of downloading of well-known files and to pay more attention to security in case of downloading software which really may contain a malicious code, developers say.

Microsoft is going to enter support to special technology for control of information on the user transferred via the web browser. It is about the Tracking Protection mechanism, working based on the lists of websites created by users to which access to these or those data is allowed or forbidden (first of all cookies). The user himself will add to them URL resources which will process (or not to process) information only if the user directly enters the link into an address bar. Thus, data exchange at referral schemes is excluded and when embedding elements of other web resources in the list of others (for example, in mashup). The similar policy was entered as reaction to the appeal of the Federal commission on trade of the USA (FTC) which was engaged in regulation of use of data in online advertizing.

By default in new IE9 all lists for blocking will be empty. Both normal users, and the organizations (owners of web resources) can create them, lists can be updated, and the browser will automatically check existence in them of these or those resources. The similar technology as note in Microsoft, is logical continuation of a system of selective blocking of cookies under a certain domain and also which appeared in the IE8 tool of anonymous surfing.

According to the research conducted by NSS Labs company in the third quarter 2010, Internet Explorer 8 and Internet Explorer 9 were shown by the best indicators of protection against the malware distributed using social engineering. According to a research, "having shown a unique indicator of blocking of URL in 94% and dynamic protection with an indicator of 99%, Internet Explorer 9 with a big separation became the best in protection of users from the malware distributed using social engineering". Thus, Internet Explorer 9 overtook the closest competitor of Firefox 3.6 by 5 times. In the report it is also mentioned that without the included function of reputation of applications (the indicator of 99% is reached at the included function of reputation of applications) Internet Explorer 9 still shows the best result – 95%.

Image:Internet explorer9.png

Internet Explorer is the leader in ensuring protection against the attacks in which the social engineering, thanks to the SmartScreen filter is used. This technology which is used in Internet Explorer 8 and Internet Explorer 9 Beta helps to recognize fraudulent websites, to prevent the hidden installation of malware and to protect confidential information, logins and passwords. SmartScreen already reflected more than 1.2 billion phishing attacks and the attacks of the malware and continues to block up to 3 million attacks every day.

IE9 bypassed in the fall of 2012 the Chrome browsers of versions from 15 to 19, Firefox of versions 7-13 and Safari 5 in the test of NSS Labs company intended for assessment of capability to prevent runs on the harmful websites. In the course of testing browsers addressed 84 thousand such websites. IE9 recognized 95% of harmful pages whereas at Firefox and Safari the similar indicator reached only 6%, and at different versions of Chrome — from 13 to 74%. NSS Labs also checked browsers for security from snap fraud — the pages generating dummy clicking banners. IE9 recognized 96.6% of such pages, Chrome — 1.6%, Firefox of 0.8%, and Safari of 0.7%.

As explain in NSS Labs, browsers rely on a cloud reputation system which finds the harmful websites on the Internet and places them in the black or white list. At detection of the harmful website the browser displays warning. As specialists of the company found out, the programming interface SafeBrowsing 2.0 providing access to services of check of reputation of executable files is integrated into Chrome, but in Firefox and Safari is absent.

Functions of protection Internet Explorer 9

Internet Explorer 9 is the first browser including a boot manager with the integrated protection against the malware based on mechanisms of reputations of applications SmartScreen. The reputation of applications of SmartScreen is a new feature which helps users to make decisions on security of the loaded files on the basis of the mechanism of reputations integrated into the browser. Today users often ignore the general warnings which appear when downloading. Other browsers show such standard warnings irrespective of whether the downloaded file is the normal widely used program or spyware. Internet Explorer 9 is the only browser which uses reputation of applications to help users to make the correct decision.

New opportunities of security of Internet Explorer 9 also include:

  • Add-on Performance Advisor function. Using an opportunity to measure load time of an additional component the Add-on Performance Advisor function notifies users if such components slow down web browsing. Users receive the notification if the general load time of all included additional components exceeds 0.2 seconds. On the basis of such notification it is possible to include necessary components and to disconnect less useful or too slow.
  • Hang Recovery function. The new possibility of Internet Explorer 9 serves for restriction of effects of hangup of a tab: if one of tabs ceases to answer, other tabs and all browser continue work.
  • Automatic updates. Permanent protection is guaranteed by regular receiving the last updates of the browser. They can be set automatically in process of availability. Such types of updates as the security updates, critical updates, updates of determinations, accumulative service packs and service packs received through the Center of updating Windows can automatically be established.
  • Support of group policy. For IT specialists the Internet Explorer 9 browser still provides excellent support of group policy. Thanks to set of 1500 parameters of group policy, including new parameters for support of opportunities of Internet Explorer 9, IT specialists can manage completely installations of the browser after deployment.

Internet Explorer consumes less energy, than other browsers

The Microsoft corporation called this version of the Internet Explorer web browser of the most effective in the consumption plan of electrical energy among all similar programs. It is reported in the official blog IEBlog in MSDN network. Based on the tests which are carried out by specialists of Microsoft, time of avtomnny operation of the notebook with the Windows 7 operating system and the battery with a capacity of 56 W/h at continuous use of Internet Explorer 9 reached 3 hours 45 minutes. The second result showed the Mozilla Firefox browser - 3 hours 35 minutes.[7]

Other browsers could not appear strong contenders of IE9. So, Chrome 10 spent a charge in 2 hours 56 minutes, Safari 5 - in 2 hours 55 minutes, and Opera 11 - in 2 hours 43 minutes, i.e. for 62 minutes earlier, than Internet Explorer. According to representatives of Microsoft, the quicker the browser processes pages, the less energy is spent. At this IE9 gained the lead thanks to support of hardware acceleration of graphics. Opera Software said that optimize efficiency of the browser to the maximum and do not trust results of the tests which are carried out by the concerned party. Mozilla was with results satisfied, despite the second place.

2008: Internet Explorer 8 as part of Windows 7

Some of new properties of the latest version Internet Explorer 8 which is a part of the Windows 7 system:

  • automatic recovery of tabs after failure;
  • the fast commands available from a context menu: search in Live Search, search on the card, sending by mail, the translation into other language, adding in online tabs and some other;
  • WebSlices (web fragments)  — a subscription of users to specific sites of pages;
  • "the smart address bar"  — when entering the address the browser returns the result based not only on URL of earlier visited website, but also on heading of the page and other its properties;
  • illumination of domain name in an address bar;
  • the private operation mode of InPrivate allowing to visit the websites without leaving marks in the history of the browser.

Confidentiality restrictions

Microsoft at the beginning of 2008 stated that in its new Internet Explorer 8.0 browser there will be a function using which users will be able easily and quickly to avoid any tracking of their activity in Network. As stated in the new material Wall Street Journal, the functionality giving to users complete confidentiality caused a hot debate among the staff of software giant.

Many company executives claimed that automatic privacy for all users to negatively affect sales returns of online advertizing of Microsoft as data on the interests of people to which these or those declarations are shown are very important for advertisers. As a result, the company did not begin to implement this function in a full-fledged type, having forced fans of confidentiality to include consciously privacy parameters at each start of the program.

According to many experts, such solution does not correspond in any way to initial promises of Microsoft to provide to users the browser with the best personal data protection in the market. "Originally plans of Microsoft concerning confidentiality were declared as "leading in this area" and the previous solutions exceeding everything. As a result most of users of a final product do not even know about existence after all the implemented privacy protection function. So it was the disappointing lie", - Simon Davies, the expert in confidentiality with whom Microsoft consulted in planning process of this functionality said.

Representatives of Microsoft do not hide too that they decided to refuse the initial plans because of concerns that it will negatively affect profit on online advertizing.
