Microsoft Office Web Apps is an online service of applications of a packet of Office, Microsoft company. The product includes the Word, Excel and PowerPoint web applications. As representatives of Microsoft note if browser Excel and PowerPoint has almost complete functionality of desktop versions allowing to edit and create documents, then the web version of Word gives the chance only today to browse text files.

Getting to work

Microsoft Office applications of Online: Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online and OneNote Online are on the website Office.com. To begin work it is necessary to create the account of Microsoft available to any e-mail address. After authorization there are available free online versions of Microsoft Office applications. Files are automatically saved in OneDrive service, they can be sent to other users, to work jointly on documents, the presentations, spreadsheets and notes in real time.

Developers simplified work with the Office Online files, gave to users an opportunity of fast creation of stylish processed documents.

Work with Office and Office Online

In the joint work mode with documents it is visible to users who works with them in one document or makes changes to it.

There was a possibility of joint work in real time using offline-applications for desktop PCs.


Updating creates conditions of more convenient data exchange and joint work in network with Microsoft Office applications, OneDrive and Outlook.com. Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online and OneNote Online are included now in a tape of applications which provides easy switching between applications of e-mail, working folders or files.

2019: Renaming from Office Online into Office

On July 24, 2019 Microsoft removed the word Online from the name of the web version of Office. This product began to call just Microsoft Office.

2013: Adding of functions

On November 7, 2013 the Microsoft corporation announced adding of functions of automatic preserving of Word documents and joint work over documents in real time. Several users at the same time can make changes and edit documents in Word Web App, PowerPoint Web App or Excel Web App.

2014: Office -> Office Online

On February 20, 2014 the Microsoft company announced official replacement of the names Office.com and Office Web Apps by Office Online.

2012: The packet of Office Web Apps based on HTML 5 is available through SkyDrive and Outlook.com services

Microsoft completed in the fall of 2012 the work on a packet of Office Web Apps based on HTML5 which was in a phase of preliminary testing since July of this year.

Amanda Lefebrve, the representative of Microsoft company, wrote in the blog on October 23, 2012 that the new office web applications available through Outlook SkyDrive and.com services are optimized for work with final Internet Explorer versions 10, Windows 8 and iOS 6.

'New editing tools and formatting of content and also support of the coordinated collective work on documents via different web applications and from an expanded set of devices, including editing using touch screens on tablets were added to this version of applications' — Lefebrve noted.

The list of modifications in specific office web applications includes:

  • new opportunities when commenting in Word packet;
  • audio and video playback in PowerPoint;
  • viewing handwritten texts in OneNote packet.

The new office web applications released on October 23, 2012 are expected individual customers. The industrial companies using Office 365 in the work should receive these applications as a part of SU4 service pack for the SharePoint platform which is released in the next few days.

2011: Microsoft does possible work with the documents Microsoft Office directly in a mail service of Mail.Ru

In July, 2011 Microsoft announced inclusion of Microsoft Office applications of Web Apps in the largest mail service of Runet – Pochta@mail.Ru (Mail.ru). Tens of millions of Internet users had an opportunity to work with the documents Microsoft Office directly in a browser window, without leaving a mailbox and without spending time for preserving of files.

Pochta@mail.Ru became the first Russian mail service using Microsoft Office applications of Web Apps which allow to open documents in the Word, Excel and PowerPoint formats in a browser window an only one click of the mouse button without formatting loss.

Thanks to integration of service users will be able to browse documents online as usual with preservation of formatting, charts and pictures and also to reproduce the presentations without the need for loading on the computer. It is possible to use this function using the link "Look" which automatically appears in the web interface of mail near office documents.

According to founders of service, the new functionality will be demanded by users of the Mail.Ru mail as already today office documents make a third of all investments sent by e-mail. Use of Office Web Apps opens new opportunities of performance improvement of the personal computer.

2010: New opportunities

In September, 2010 it became known of new opportunities of Office Web Apps allowing to place PowerPoint presentations and large-format tables of Excel in blogs and on web pages of users. For this purpose it is necessary to load the original.PPT file into server storage SkyDrive and to configure permission. An opportunity to unroll the presentation on all screen is given, and in the presence of the corresponding permission users will be able to edit contents of the presentations and to apply the made changes online.

Also support of mobile browsers in Excel Web App is added to Office Web Apps that allows to browse the tables Excel on the display of smartphones (as well as Word documents and PowerPoint).

The list of improvements in Office Web Apps includes the Insert Clip Art functions in PowerPoint and Insert Chart in Excel, support of printing of documents from an editing mode in the Word application and also a possibility of fast opening of files from SkyDrive storage in desktop versions of programs of Office.

2009

It is expected that on the next stage of development also OneNote Web App will be included in the package of web applications from a packet of Office.

The packet of Office Web Applications will be available to users as a free part of Windows Live which will comprise online advertizing. The release of the complete beta of OWA is appointed to the end of fall of 2009, however the software giant does not promise to add to it OneNote and Word with a possibility of editing documents by then.

The final version of Office Web Applications should be started together with a packet of Office 2010 in the first half of 2010. During the time which remained to release developers are going to finish and complement with new features these applications and also to correct defects including on the basis of the comments received after testing of this and the next public versions Reuters reports.

According to some analysts, Office Web Apps looks a packet, more difficult for mastering, in comparison with the main competitors today — Google Docs and Zoho Office.

It is known that the Internet version of a packet of Office will work in browsers Internet Explorer Firefox, Safari and Chrome though the software giant does not guarantee support of the last.
