Sendmail — one of the oldest agents of mail transfer (MTA — mail transfer agent). It is distributed for free together with source codes. There are versions of the program for almost all operating systems and hardware platforms. Delivermail is the program which formed a basis for sendmail, it was created in 1979 and went complete with 4.0 and 4.1 BSD and a little later it is finished by Eric Allman. This transaction opens access for a team of engineers of Proofpoint to unique technologies and also strengthens positions of vendor in a segment of corporate solutions for safe information exchange. Under the terms of the signed agreement of Proofpoint paid about 23 mln. dollars cash for Sendmail. Execution of the transaction and settlement between the parties took place at the same time without additional approvals.
The message transfer agent from Sendmail takes a place of honor in the history of development of the Internet as the first MTA-platform supporting the simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) which was available for broad sale. Today Sendmail MTA as a commercial product with open source codes, is widely used for the organization of internal networks of the companies and technologies of transmission of messages in the Internet. Thanks to this transaction Proofpoint is going to strengthen the Sentrion MTA platform, in parallel continuing to support distribution of open source software (software).
Proofpoint is going to increase the income in 2014 by 5 mln. dollars, a half from which should come thanks to sale of the current support of Sendmail, and the second half - due to new sales of solutions of Proofpoint among customers of the purchased vendor.
