2020: Elimination of the vulnerability allowing to steal far off the system password

To users of the tool for remote PC control of TeamViewer it is strongly recommended to be updated to the latest version of TeamViewer in connection with the dangerous vulnerability in the software allowing to steal the system password and to compromise a system. It became known on August 11, 2020. Moreover, the attack almost does not require user interaction, everything that it is necessary - to convince the victim to visit the harmful site.

The vulnerability which got ID CVE 2020-13699 is connected how TeamViewer processes the headings URI that allows the malefactor to force software to transfer a request of NTLM of authentication for the system of attacking.

In other words, the criminal can use URI the scheme TeamViewer to force the application installed on the system of the victim to initiate connection from under control attacking to the network SMB folder. Thus it can cause leakage of a name of a system and NTLMv2 the hashed version of the password and to become authorized on the system of the victim.

For the attack the malefactor will need to implement harmful iframe on the website, and then then to force the victim to visit a resource. Further on the computer the desktop version of TeamViewer and the remote SMB folder when which opening a system will send a request of NTLM of authentication will automatically be started. Having intercepted this request, the malefactor can execute the code or use for cracking of a hash.

Vulnerability mentions the following headings URI: teamviewer10, teamviewer8, teamviewerapi, tvchat1, tvcontrol1, tvfiletransfer1, tvjoinv8, tvpresent1, tvsendfile1, tvsqcustomer1, tvsqsupport1, tvvideocall1 and tvvpn1.

TeamViewer developers eliminated vulnerability with release of updates for versions of TeamViewer from 8 to 15. For August 11, 2020 there are no data on the attacks operating this vulnerability, but, considering popularity of software, they should be expected already shortly[1].

2016

TeamViewer 12 final

On October 18, 2016 the TeamViewer company announced integration of the application for remote control with the Salesforce Service Cloud platform.

Hackers hacked accounts of users of TeamViewer

In May, 2016, it became known that users of software for remote access to the TeamViewer computer complain of cracking of their accounts. Messages about cracking of accounts appeared within a week on the Reddit TeamViewer Accounts Hacked social platform[2].

Thanks to unauthorized access to the account TeamViewer malefactors can exercise remote control of the computer. Also it is reported that because of cracking of an account on the PC applications racketeers appear and money from bank accounts and PayPal vanishes. Besides, hackers got access even to those accounts on which multi-factor authorization and the white list is used.

The support service of TeamViewer claims that computer systems were not exposed to cracking, and users who use unreliable data of an account are guilty of an incident.
