The Tizen Association includes such famous world vendors as Samsung, Intel, Huawei, Fujitsu, Panasonic. Smartphones and tablets are far from the main application of the system. There are also platform branches for smart TVs and wearables. Intel has focused on entertainment and automotive solutions, and South Korean Samsung is actively promoting solutions on Tizen for the Internet of Things.

Tizen is not only and not so much a mobile OS. It can control refrigerators, TVs, smartphones and tablets, smart watches, single-board computers and other embedded devices. The platform is closely integrated with the Samsung ARTIK IoT ecosystem and all its capabilities can be tested now: order products online from the refrigerator control panel or using a smartphone to open the door to the hotel room, turn on lighting, TV and set the temperature of the air conditioner. In addition to control using touch screens, a voice interface is being actively developed - soon the user will be able, for example, to command the electric stove to warm up the soup.

2022: Samsung Closes Tizen Mobile App Store

In early January 2022, Samsung closed the Tizen app store for both newly minted and existing users. The company closed the registration and made the store available only to existing users, and they could only receive previously downloaded applications, and both categories of users could not download and update applications. More details here.

Over 27,000 vulnerabilities in Tizen OS

Program Verification Systems security researcher Andrey Karpov July 17, 2017 announced the discovery of thousands of vulnerabilities in the Tizen OS. Having examined only 3.3% of the operating system code using the PVS Studio parser, Karpov discovered about 900 problems. According to his calculations, the entire code, thus, can contain 27 thousand vulnerabilities.[1]

"I examined more than 2,400,000 lines of code (along with comments) and found 900 errors. The entire Tizen project, inclusive with third-party libraries, consists of 72,500,000 code (excluding comments) on C and C++. Therefore, I checked 3.3% of the code. Calculations: (72500000 * 900/2400000 = 27187), "says Karpov
.

The researcher notified Samsung of the problem and offered his help, but the company refused to conduct the study, saying that it has its own analytical tool, which is regularly used to analyze Tizen.

"Be that as it may, we do not agree that Tizen has 27 thousand defects," Samsung said in a response.

Tizen 4.x

As part of this project, the kernel, interfaces (similarity with the latest versions of iOS) and system development tools are being finalized. The first build of Tizen 4.x is expected in June 2017, and the second is due in December. It plans to include the .NET library from Microsoft, which will allow you to use VisualStudio and facilitate the development of applications for Tizen.

By the time Tizen 4.0 is released, Samsung expects that a global infrastructure for the Internet of Things will be ready: the ARTIK Cloud, hardware-independent development tools on.NET, as well as a container (docker) for platform virtualization.

40 zero-day vulnerabilities

On April 5, 2017, it became known that there were more than forty zero-day vulnerabilities in Tizen OS identified as a result of an experiment conducted by Amihai Neiderman, head of the research division of the Israeli company Equus Software, eight months ago.

The researcher decided to conduct a security audit of the Tizen OS - in his opinion, no one was interested in this issue. During the analysis, Neiderman revealed more than forty Zero-day vulnerabilities in the OS and was horrified by the quality of the code. In his opinion, almost all system applications are vulnerable[2]

According to Neiderman, Samsung developers did not bother themselves and borrowed a significant part of the code from the Bada operating system - the OS code base looks outdated.

It's probably the worst code I've ever seen. Everything that could be done wrong is done wrong. Obviously, people who understand security did not even look at this code and did not write it. It's like hiring an underdog and letting him write software for you.

However, most vulnerabilities are fresh: they are contained in code that has been written specifically for Tizen in recent years. For example, the expert managed to hack Samsung Smart TV using a vulnerability in the Tizen Store application catalog - the equivalent of the Google Play Store. With the help of the Tizen Store, any malware can be delivered to the device, and due to the high privileges of the directory, the hacker's capabilities are not limited, he gets full control over the device. And the heap overflow bug allows you to bypass the Tizen Store authentication.

A study of the OS revealed the incorrect use of the strcpy () function, problems with the implementation of SSL encryption, due to which information is transmitted in open form, many other vulnerabilities.

According to Neiderman, Samsung plans to develop Tizen and are clearly preparing something large for the OS.

It is likely that next year the Galaxy S9 will work on Tizen, but the OS is not yet mature enough for this.

Over the past months, the specialist was unable to contact Samsung representatives, trying to report problems. Now that Neiderman spoke publicly about Tizen's insecurity at the Security Analyst Summit, Samsung representatives "noticed" the researcher and hurried to assure the public - work is underway to fix vulnerabilities.

2015

Tizen officially released

On October 15, 2015, as part of the annual Samsung Enterprise Mobility Forum business event, Samsung introduced the Samsung Z3 smartphone based on Tizen OS and it became the focus of the forum.

One of the features of the OS that distinguishes Tizen from other operating platforms operating on the market in this time slot is the maximum openness of the source code. This fact offers a great opportunity for users and developers, allowing, if necessary, to increase the capabilities of the OS in accordance with specific tasks and needs.

2011: Samsung and MeeGo developers begin development of Tizen

In September 2011, it became known that the developers of the platform for mobile devices are MeeGo starting a new project - Tizen. Two Linux development teams announced plans to combine their developments to create a new software platform called Tizen.

In their statement, the LiMo Foundation and Linux Foundation noted that Tizen is based on open source, generally accepted standards and is a cross-architectural software platform supporting many devices, including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and automotive infotainment systems.

Technical project management will be headed by the Samsung Electronics companies (Samsung Electronics Rus) and Intel, reported Linux Foundation.

Morgan Gillis, Executive Director of the LiMo Foundation, noted that his organization understands Tizen as a timely step towards change that brings together the largest advocates of creating Linux mobile systems in the new ecosystem, with an open understanding of the development of web applications that will assist device providers in their innovations and liberalizing consumer accessibility for developers and service providers. "LiMo will keep its focus on providing the industry with broad support from manufacturers and a neutral ecosystem independent of services based on the spirit of open and unlimited capabilities personified in Linux," he stressed.

The mobile industry continues to perceive Linux and open-source technologies as key factors in reducing the cost of developing devices, increasing flexibility, and reducing time to market. Project participants expect Tizen to further enhance these effects based on the availability of any device category and a strong focus on open standards.

Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, said that the Linux Foundation is pleased to host the Tizen platform. "Open-source platforms such as Tizen are good for Linux, as they improve its implementation on devices of different categories. We look forward to starting cooperation with the LiMo Foundation and its members in this project, "said Zemlin.

Tizen is the result of the integration of software platforms MeeGo, which also developed the Linux Foundation and LiMo.
