Vivaldi 5.0 for Desktop

On December 2, 2021, the company Vivaldi Technologies announced the launch of a major browser update - Vivaldi 5.0 for desktop. PERSONAL COMPUTER The editor allows you to create themes for browser users to share and share, as well as download themes they like with one click. mice Another update is the translation panel, which automatically translates the selected text into the user's native language. Other updates include a pop-up download bar that shows the remaining download time and its speed.

Vivaldi

According to the company, in the updated version, a theme editor was added that allows you to create a design for the browser working window and set a suitable background for them. Users can create themes from scratch, download themes from a public gallery and upload their themes there for other Vivaldi users. In addition, users can set up topic changes throughout the day.

The browser developers have optimized the Vivaldi appearance setting:

  • Background image - no longer need to edit the theme and background image individually. The updated theme editor now includes a background image for each theme.
  • Custom Themes: To enable a theme in Settings, you must click on it and it will appear in the browser. With the minus button, you can delete themes as needed. You can delete all created or installed themes except those originally available in Vivaldi by default. The preview has become more convenient - now it shows the correct rounding of corners and colors, which fully correspond to the topic.
  • Updated themes: There are two buttons at the bottom of the list of preinstalled themes. The first is a shortcut for creating your own theme, the second is a link to a vivaldi.net where you can download themes created by other Vivaldi users.
  • Theme Editor-You can edit colors, settings, and backgrounds.
  • Theme Settings: With multiple settings for each theme, you can create an optimal balance of color and visual accents. Vivaldi 5.0 offers more precise settings for each of the themes.
  • Topic sharing: The Vivaldi browser allows users to share topics. The function is controlled by two buttons - "Open Theme" and "Export Theme" - at the bottom of the theme editor you can import and export themes to your friends and beyond. You must click the Export button to create a ZIP file with the theme you like.
  • Vivaldi Theme Gallery: Under themes.vivaldi.net, you can view a gallery of themes created by Vivaldi employees and other users. You can set as many topics as you need by simply clicking Set Theme. You can share the file with the theme archive. In Settings, the "Open Themes" button allows you to open archived themes from a local machine.

The updated version of the Vivaldi 5.0 browser optimized the translation function, created on the basis of the developments of Lingvanex, in which the panel appeared.

The Translate Panel is an addition to the browser's built-in translation capabilities, from which you can translate text fragments. Sometimes you need to translate fragments of page content in a difficult language to understand. Or maybe the user is learning the language, you need to translate into a fragment at a time, and not just full pages.

Previously, the browser also offered the ability to translate selected texts in a pop-up/dialog using Vivaldi Translate in a few quick steps. But the Translate Panel takes this function to the next level, offering the option of one-step auto-translation. After enabling this option (with the panel open), it is enough to select the text to see its translation in the panel. No additional clicks are required.

The selected text can also be translated by entering or inserting the selected text into the translation panel or simply by translating the selected text using the translation icon. Both the selected text and its translation can be viewed in the panel, which makes the translation process noticeably faster.

The history of all recent translations is also available through this panel. This story - and everything the user does with Vivaldi Translate - is kept away from prying eyes. Vivaldi Translate servers are located in Iceland, and the company does not create profiles of its users or collect any data about them.

In addition to these features, the Vivaldi and Lingvanex development team paid special attention to the speed of the service. In this version, the translation speed does not slow down even with high load and many active tasks.

The Vivaldi browser development team in version 5.0 has added another way to monitor downloads. Download information is now displayed in a pop-up window. All the functions that are available when viewing downloads in the panel appeared in the pop-up window.

Vivaldi 5.0 for Android

On December 2, 2021, Vivaldi Technologies introduced a browser version for Android Vivaldi 5.0 devices.

Two-level tab panels

A feature that allows you to work on an Android device as efficiently as on a desktop PC - a two-level grouping of tabs. Previously, this was impossible on mobile devices. Vivaldi optimized external browser settings, implemented an additional grouping function, and made it more convenient to use a large number of tabs at the same time, adding the option to reduce their size to web page favorites and turn off the tab close button.

Grouping tabs in two rows is a way to keep order on the screen and optimize the search time for the desired web page. Tabs within the group will appear in the second row, which will be hidden when you go to the view of ungrouped tabs. To get started with a two-level tab grouping, just click the New Tab button long and select New Tab Group. This allows you to create a tab group with the current page and one additional tab.

Another way to create a group is through a tab switch. By viewing tab shortcuts, you can drag one tab onto another tab so you can create a group.

Two-level grouping is a good addition to many useful built-in Vivaldi functions, including ad blocker (disabled by default), protection against collecting information about user actions, built-in Vivaldi Translate translator, notes, page shots and many others.

Tab interface

In addition to the greater convenience of using tabs, the Vivaldi 5.0 browser optimized the interface, added the ability to disable "dark mode" for the current tab and introduced two options for tabs in the panel - disabling the tab close button for background tabs, as well as displaying only site icons instead of tabs. This made it possible to more effectively use the screen space of a tablet or smartphone and improve page browsing settings.

In order to adjust the display mode of the page bar, go to the "Settings" section and select one of two options:

  • Show the "X" button for background tabs. By removing the "X" button to close the background tabs, you can get more space for the tab title.
  • Show tab as favicon: function shows only favicon, without title and "X" button.

Control the "dark mode" of the view

If the user prefers to work with the dark mode of displaying web pages, now you can turn off the "dark mode" for the current page if necessary.

Working with notes

Now you can instantly add text from the pages you are viewing to your notes using the built-in feature. This increases the speed of working in the browser from mobile devices. The selected text displays a suggestion of different actions, including "Add to Notes." By selecting this item, the text will instantly appear in the notes.

Tablet Interface

The Vivaldi 5.0 browser for Android has improved the user interface. The main goal of the changes is to free up more screen space for viewing pages and optimize tab management. To do this, a panel of key functions appeared in the browser. It opens on the left side of the screen, as in the standard desktop configuration. This creates a familiar and intuitive feeling from using the browser.

On the side panel of the browser there are functions for working with search history, downloads, bookmarks and notes in the split screen mode with the main window. The panel is turned on and off by pressing the panel button in the upper left corner of the panel.

The Vivaldi 5.0 browser allows you to add, edit and move notes and bookmarks inside the panel in full screen mode. Users can select bookmarks from sidebars and open them in a new window, which helps to better organize the workflow right in the panel.

The main updates of the Vivaldi 5.0 browser for tablets:

  • Displaying desktop-style tabs is the best way to control which tabs are currently open. Two-level grouping of tabs helps to better organize work on the tablet.
  • The address bar and tab sidebar increase browser functionality and make it easier to work with many different pages.
  • You can hide the Tabs and Settings pane to increase viewing space. The status bar is part of the Android user interface, but Vivaldi can display a browser window on top of it (as in full screen mode).
  • The user interface works in both portrait and landscape mode and is fully optimized. Because landscape mode is wide, the toolbar at the bottom is retracted and the buttons move up. Therefore, it is recommended to use the desktop version of the site in landscape mode.

"All the changes we made to the browser version for Android devices are aimed at making use Internet quite comfortable. An optimized interface, two levels of tabs, a taskbar and other functions provide this opportunity and make using the browser intuitive for the user, "-

said Jon von Tetzchner, founder and CEO of Vivaldi.

Vivaldi 4.3

On October 7, 2021, Vivaldi Technologies introduced the Vivaldi browser update - version Vivaldi 4.3, in which the Google Idle API is disabled by default, the download panel and screenshot function are optimized, and 68 languages have been added to the built-in translator. Also, the updated version of the browser implements the PWA (progressive web applications) function and optimizes the mail client and calendar.

Image:Vivaldi 4.3.png
Vivaldi 4.3

According to the company, disabling the Idle API, a Google development that transmits information to sites about how much time users do not spend at the computer and when the screen saver or screen lock is activated, is to increase the level of privacy of using the Internet. In Vivaldi 4.3, this feature is blocked by default, preventing sites from tracking user activity on both desktop PCs and Android devices. In addition, privacy options have also been added to the Vivaldi Mail mail client and calendar.

Another update implemented in the desktop version of Vivaldi 4.3 was made in the screenshot function. Now it is possible to resize the selection when taking snapshots. The download panel has also been updated - the user was able to see the download speed of files.

An optimized sync feature on desktops and Android will help people access their data on Android computers and devices with their Vivaldi account - safely and faster than before.

Built-in translator Vivaldi Translate, developed by Lingvanex, now supports 108 languages on desktops and Android, which allows you to access any sites in your language.

One of the most popular functions in the era of active use of applications is web applications (PWA). This feature allows you to convert a site to a web application at the click of a button. Vivaldi 4.3 added the PWA feature to the desktop version, and also refined the grouping panel in the mobile version, which now allows you to switch sites within a group of tabs while browsing on Android, even if the tab panel is not activated.

In this version of the browser, it has become easier and faster to take pictures of the selected area or a screenshot of the entire page. In Vivaldi 4.3, the desktop screenshot function received icons that clearly explain how to use it. One of the most frequently requested updates, the resize option, was also added to the updated version of the browser, helping users take the right screenshots the first time.

The screenshot function is activated via the command line through the camera icon, and can also be enabled using keyboard shortcuts, quick commands, and mouse gestures.

With Vivaldi Sync, users can sync their content and settings between multiple computers and Android devices. The synchronization function is protected by end-to-end encryption. In order to provide complete protection against data tracking, the function code was developed "from scratch."

In browser version 4.3, setting up synchronization has become easier - the design of Vivaldi Sync has become more intuitive, its icons and colors draw attention to key functions and options. The updates also affected account setup and recovery, which have become more convenient. If the user forgets, password enciphering they can simply use the backup key to decrypt the synchronized data.

The Vivaldi download panel on the desktop now shows not only the details of the file download, but also a graph of the download speed. There are also buttons in the panel with which you can restart the download or find downloaded files on the system. Key statistics are in bold, making the status of the download process more clear.

Google recently introduced the Idle API feature, which can be used by sites to get information about user inactivity. The function captures states when the user does not interact with a device or specific equipment, such as a keyboard or mouse, or when the screen saver or screen lock is turned on.

Since this API can be abused to track user behavior, Vivaldi sees this as a privacy risk and does not allow websites to use it. This setting is disabled by default in Vivaldi 4.3 for both desktop and Android. Unlike Chrome, Vivaldi does not even allow a website to ask for tracking permission - their requests are rejected by default. However, you can override this setting if you wish.

Vivaldi Translate, based on the developments of Lingvanex. Now 108 languages are available in the online translator. By adding 68 new languages, Vivaldi 4.3 has made browsing convenient in any language. Lingvanex-based Vivaldi Translate is hosted on servers Vivaldi in. Iceland No third parties servers are involved. Vivaldi Translate runs on,, and Windows Linux macOS Android devices.

The OAuth authentication protocol in the mail service and Vivaldi calendar is now only for Mail and Calendar and is no longer used in conjunction with the main browser. Thus, when using the built-in Vivaldi email client to access Gmail, users are no longer included in all Google services such as YouTube. That means a service like Gmail can be used by preventing Google from tracking users across the internet.

The updated Vivaldi 4.3 browser allows you to view channels on YouTube without logging into Google. This is possible using the Vivaldi built-in news reader client, which allows you to subscribe to channels in which you can then watch videos directly. Another update in the mail client - now attachments can be added by simply dragging and dropping them into the Vivaldi Mail window.

Vivaldi has support for PWA (Progressive Web Apps) on the desktop. These applications allow you to save selected pages as independent "applications" that you can run using your own shortcut on your desktop and in your own window. On pages that support running as a PWA, the right-click menu has the option "Install (site)." To delete, use the ⋮ menu in the PWA window to access the option.

For sites that do not support full PWA, the Create Shortcut option in the right-click tab menu can work in the same way as PWA, with a check mark on Open as Window.

The updated version of Vivaldi 4.3 introduced the Tab Stack toolbar. This feature allows users to change tabs within a group while browsing any web page, even if the tab bar is not activated.

The tab group toolbar also includes options for opening and closing tabs within a group, and the ability to preview grouped tabs.

Vivaldi - default browser for Manjaro Linux Cinnamon

On September 9, 2021, Vivaldi announced that Vivaldi had become the default browser on the Arch distribution of Manjaro in Cinnamon. The browser has become available to Manjaro users. Read more here.

Vivaldi 4.1 for Android and Chromebooks

On August 4, 2021, Vivaldi Technologies announced the release of the Vivaldi 4.1 browser version for Android and Chromebooks. The browser includes new tab settings, options for enabling and disabling tab grouping, and the function of opening xrefs directly in the browser.

Version 4.1 for Android and Chromebooks is presented following Vivaldi 4.0 with the Vivaldi Translate function - an online translator that does not store the history of the entered data and does not transmit information about users and their interests to third parties.

Customization is always more convenient when using the browser. The Vivaldi team scrutinized user feedback and wishes, and in the latest update added flexible options that allow you to customize your browser to user habits while working online.

It became possible to open xrefs directly in the browser without launching third-party applications. There are also settings for opening new tabs and the ability to enable and disable grouping of tabs at the request of users has been added.

Vivaldi 4.1 is available for free, it is suitable for mobile phones and tablets with Android 5 or higher and for modern Chromebooks.

Working with xrefs without leaving the browser

The Vivaldi browser provides many settings that can protect against surveillance by online services. Built-in ad blocker (disabled by default), anti-surveillance, notes, page docking and more are all useful options that you can customize to your needs.

This version of the browser allows you to open external pages without going to applications. For example, clicking on a YouTube link will open the video in Vivaldi rather than sharing it with the YouTube app. This is especially useful for links where an external query handler is installed in an application that the user does not want to install.

In addition to this feature, users do not need to download many applications that developers cannot always update in time, thus opening up more opportunities for attackers who exploit vulnerabilities in applications.

You can activate this setting by going to V > Settings > Web Pages > Stay in Browser.

Settings for opening new tabs

The settings offer 4 options:

  • After the linked tabs, the new tab opens next to the tabs associated by source;
  • After the active tab - the new tab will open next to the active tab in which the user is currently working;
  • After all tabs - the new tab opens to the right of all tabs;
  • Group with Linked Tab - The new tab opens in a group with an active tab.

To find the new tab settings, go to V > Settings > New Tab Position.

Enable or disable tab grouping

If you prefer to use tab groups to manage open web pages, you can enable grouping. By default, it is disabled.

Tab grouping allows you to merge multiple open web pages under a single tab, which helps free up space in the tab bar. If you click on a group, you can access all the tabs inside.

To enable or disable tab grouping in Settings, go to V > Settings > Tabs > Enable Tab Grouping.

Vivaldi 4.1: command chains and batch grouping of tabs

On July 28, 2021, Vivaldi Technologies, the developer of the private browser of the same name, introduced two functions added in version 4.1 - command chains and batch grouping of tabs. Browser version Vivaldi 4.1 is already available for download.

The batch tab grouping option enhances the ability to manage multiple open pages. Users can now choose from three different tab grouping styles: compact, two-level, or batch. When using batch grouping, the user can expand and collapse tab groups in one click, freeing up the workspace in the panel.

Also in the updated version of the Vivaldi browser, macros appeared - command chains programmed by the user himself. Command chains allow you to customize the sequence of commands that will be executed simultaneously without the need to individually run each action. Chains allow you to combine more than 200 commands of the Vivaldi browser in any sequence, while the user can activate these macros both from the quick commands menu and by assigning a key combination or a mouse gesture. This allows you to significantly speed up routine operations and increase browser performance, the company noted.

In addition to these features, the Vivaldi 4.1 browser version also added a background update option in the Windows environment, which allows you to automatically update the application without distracting the user, as well as an improved view of web pages in read mode.

File:Aquote1.png
"We collected feedback and wishes from users who helped us optimize the popular function of the Vivaldi browser - tab grouping. In addition, we have added new ways to manage Vivaldi, significantly increasing user performance when working on the network, "said Vivaldi CEO Jon von Techner.

Vivaldi 4.0

On June 9, 2021, Vivaldi Technologies announced a major update to the Vivaldi browser and the introduction of 4 features in version 4.0. A built-in private translator of web pages, as well as beta versions of the mail client, calendar and RSS aggregator will appear in the browser.

According to the company, the most significant browser update is the built-in Vivaldi Translate translator. Vivaldi browser users can now translate web pages without having to install third-party extensions that pass to advertisers information on user requests. Vivaldi Translate does not preserve the history of translations, ensuring the privacy of use of the service, and ensuring safety data from large companies (,). Google Microsoft The service is designed specifically for the Vivaldi 4.0 browser by Lingvanex, which specializes in machine translation solutions. It is housed on servers Vivaldi in. Iceland

Vivaldi 4.0

Vivaldi 4.0 has three options for showing the main page - Essentials, Classic or Fully Loaded Vivaldi. Each option provides access to the full functionality of the browser. The difference is the level of access to functions directly from the interface:

  • Essentials: Suitable for those who live on the principle of "be easier" and want to have a more private browser, but are not ready to immediately master a large number of updated functions. Vivaldi does not track browser usage, nor does Vivaldi's built-in ad blocker and trackers and Vivaldi Translate.
  • Classic: This layout adds a bar and status bar, giving users quick access to performance-optimizing features.
  • Fully Loaded: This is all there is in Essentials and Classic, as well as beta versions of Vivaldi Mail, Vivaldi Feed Reader and Vivaldi Calendar.

Desktop New onboarding

In the 4.0 browser, Vivaldi also introduced beta versions of the Vivaldi Mail mail service, the Vivaldi Calendar and its own Feed Reader RSS aggregator. The built-in mail client allows you to synchronize user mailboxes and calendars registered with other services in one account. In addition, it offers convenient functions for finding and sorting letters and events in the calendar. Users can also create another vivaldi.net account or add a mailbox from third-party services such as Fastmail.

Vivaldi Mail Beta features:

  • Vivaldi Mail solves the problem of storing a large amount of mail in several mail accounts. The mail service provides access to letters from several accounts in one box - without the need to log into each account separately.
  • It supports IMAP and POP3, so you can connect the mailbox of any provider to the mail client. For example, Gmail users can log into their Google account from Vivaldi Mail Beta and Vivaldi Calendar Beta.
  • Data Base: Vivaldi maintains a database of all messages, labels, filters, searches, etc. Mail from all accounts is indexed, so you can search it offline. And if the mail is pre-indexed, then the entire contents of the letter can be found even before it is opened.
  • Tabbed interface: When you create a message, it opens in a different tab, not in the same window. This allows you to simultaneously open several messages (and even alternate them), which makes navigation easier.

Mail

Vivaldi Mail Beta Sorting:

  • Messages are not stored in a specific folder and can be shown in any mailbox folder, depending on the search options;
  • Color sorting: flags are synchronized with other mail clients, it is possible to assign colors to letters for different collation parameters;
  • Search acceleration - Search queries can be saved as filters, which is useful when you run the same search multiple times. Shortcuts (similar to tags) can be synchronized even when using another client on another device;
  • Ability to queue messages. The function is relevant for emails that the user intends to send later and in a certain sequence.

The built-in Vivaldi Calendar Beta is synchronized with third-party calendars (Fastmail, Zimbra, iCloud, etc.), or can be closed at the request of the user. The calendar has three display options (event headers; Titles and briefs full view of events in the calendar), convenient filters for sorting and navigating events, and the ability to create tasks.

Calendar

Vivaldi Calendar Beta functionality:

  • The working mode of the calendar is private or joint. Users can create a personal calendar whose data will be stored only on their PC, or work with other people in common calendars.
  • Calendars can be stored on the user's server or on any other CalDAV servers.
  • All event data is fully visible, while other calendars show only one or two lines per event.

Calendar display options:

  • Minimum - shows only the name of the event;
  • Complete - shows all event data in the main view;
  • Compact - shows the name and short text about events.

Users see their calendar on the panel in the browser. In addition, they can choose the format for displaying information by day, week, and month.

Vivaldi Feed Reader Beta will allow users to view interesting content ads without intrusive advertising. The RSS aggregator from Vivaldi does not collect information about the preferences of its users, providing completely private viewing of content. The browser's built-in RSS aggregator also displays videos by embedding them in a feed without third-party files Cookies. Vivaldi Feed Reader Beta uses Vivaldi Mail to display news ribbon elements. Users can view and rename ribbon items in the Mail panel, or view them in a dedicated Feeds panel.

Feeds

Vivaldi Feed Reader Beta helps keep up-to-date with various news resources, sites, blogs and channels, including:

  • YouTube channels without going to YouTube. To see news and updates, users only need to subscribe to the channel. To ensure user privacy, Vivaldi extracts video content (using a URL without cookies) from the feed and displays it, rather than linking to the video. Any updates, such as "1 person liked your video," will not appear in the feed.
  • Podcasts: Vivaldi supports multiple versions of RSS and the Atom, audio and video web standards of the podcast do not fail when received as a feed.

The update is available for computers operating systems Windows, Mac, Linux and mobile devices running on Android (starting from version 5), as well as on modern Chromebooks.

Vivaldi 3.8

The international company Vivaldi Technologies on April 29, 2021 presented version 3.8 of its Vivaldi browser. The main changes relate to safety and ease of work.

In version 3.8, it is disabled FLoC - the technology of the company that Google monitors user behavior and transmits to advertisers without data using it. files cookie FLoC analyzes the behavior of each user and classifies it into a certain group - for example, when looking for drugs. At the same time, information about the interests and behavior, the estimated age and character traits of the user becomes available to any site, and Google gets the opportunity to analyze in detail all data groups.

File:Aquote1.png
"Often, users automatically accept files Cookies, not realizing that they thereby give permission to collect information about themselves," said Jon von Tetzchner the founder of Vivaldi Technologies. - Some websites do not work without cookies, which puts users in a desperate situation. I believe that this system of collecting user data should finally be abolished. No one has the right to collect information about you with yours and, moreover, without your permission. "
File:Aquote2.png

In addition, the updated version of Vivaldi runs Cookie Crumbler, a feature that allows you to configure the browser to work with cookies once, rather than confirming them individually on each site. According to the GDPR (Personal Data Protection Regulation), sites that use cookies must warn their users about this. The regulation was originally created to protect users' personal data, but this led to messages and pop-ups in which to note which types of data can be collected. This significantly slows down the Internet and annoys users, so the ability to configure the browser so that it does it on its own will come in handy.

Other changes in version 3.8 affected the interface and bookmark work. By default, the panels located on the left side of the browser window have learned to change transparency. You can also select an image that appears from under transparent panels. At the same time, a blur effect, contrast adjustment and several other features appeared in the design settings.

Bookmarks can now be added quickly and without opening additional dialog boxes with a keyboard shortcut. In the bookmark menu, it is easy to switch between regular bookmarks and those on the Quick View panel, or immediately expand the entire folder tree. Ability to switch to dark web browsing

On June 11, 2020, Vivaldi unveiled the Vivaldi browser update for Android.

Vivaldi for Android

According to the company, this version of Vivaldi for Android provides a set of updates for browser functions such as tabs, built-in ad blocker and surveillance, notes, customizable express panels and more. The first mobile version of Vivaldi was released in April 2020. The browser supports devices running Android version 5 and higher, as well as tablets and Chromobooks.

Vivaldi has a user interface that allows you to keep at hand features such as a toolbar, Quick View panels, tab bar, notes and a screenshot.

Instead of relying on WebView - the built-in browser kernel for Android - Vivaldi uses modified Chromium source code, the same as the desktop version of the browser. This means that Vivaldi does not send information to Google. Collecting user data and creating user profiles is not a business model of Vivaldi.

The updated version of Vivaldi has fixed several bugs and improved the operation of many functions. Following user requests, the updated version of Vivaldi adds the ability to switch to dark web browsing, which works well with the existing dark themes of the browser itself. The preferred viewing modes can be selected in the Vivaldi settings, under Themes.

Ability to switch to dark web browsing

Vivaldi features:

  • Tab bar: Tabs similar to those on the desktop version are built into the browser interface as a tab bar by default. Thus, the user gets the usual control over open tabs and the ability to switch between them in one touch.
  • Tab Manager: In addition to the Vivaldi tab bar function, the tab manager allows quick searching between open regular and private tabs, and also provides access to recently closed tabs and tabs opened on another device if the user has enabled synchronization.

Tab Manager
  • Built-in ad blocker and snooping: Provides quick, ad-free web browsing. The function is disabled by default, but users can enable it using a shield icon located in the address bar or directly in the browser settings.

Built-in ad and surveillance blocker
  • Built-in notes-A function to create records while you are working. Notes are synchronized between devices, and to start working with them, click the "Panels" button in the lower left corner of the screen, and then the "Notes" icon at the bottom.

  • Quick Start Dashboards: The user can place bookmarks or groups of website bookmarks on the browser home screen so that they can be quickly accessed later simply by opening an empty tab or each time the browser is launched.
  • Bookmark Manager - allows you to create and manage bookmark lists, edit links, short names, and other information. Short names can be used for quick access through the browser address bar.

Bookmark Manager
  • Page Snapshot: Unlike other browsers, Vivaldi has a snapshot function for the entire page being viewed. By clicking on the "V" button at the top of the browser interface and selecting "Page Shot," you can take a snapshot of the entire screen, including its invisible part.

  • Search engine prefixes: You can quickly switch between different search engines using prefixes in the address bar.
  • Back and Forward buttons: Advanced functions of these buttons allow you to open the list of page browsing history using a long tap and go to any of the elements of this list in one touch.
  • Active page color - The browser interface color changes depending on the color gamut of the web page you are viewing.

  • Vivaldi synchronization: the ability to synchronize data between Vivaldi browsers on various devices. Instead of using Google servers, user data is stored on Vivaldi's own servers located in Iceland. Synchronized data is protected by end-to-end encryption with a unique user password and cannot be read by Vivaldi.

Tab Bar

The Vivaldi interface adapts to different device screens, freeing up free space for browsing the web. When viewed horizontally, the control buttons move to the top panel and the bottom dashboard disappears. Also, when browsing the web when you start scrolling through the page, all panels are hidden, freeing the screen for viewing the website.

Also, to increase the visible space of web pages in the browser settings, users can turn off the display of some browser panels.

Vivaldi 3.1 with updated Note Manager, customizable menus and accelerated launch

On June 11, 2020, Vivaldi introduced a full-screen note manager and menu customization function in the browser version for Vivaldi 3.1 desktops.

According to the developer, Vivaldi has a note-making function that allows you to write ideas and save small fragments of text in the browser sidebar. The tool supports the lightweight Markdown markup language and can automatically attach page snapshots from where the text was saved, as well as add the address of the original web page to the note. In the updated version of the browser, a fully functional note manager has appeared, which includes both note management tools and tools for visually editing them. The updated note manager offers features that focus on text processing, being more functional than just margin notes. Notes are opened for editing on a full screen, equipped with a toolbar that allows you to work with texts of any size. Working through the note manager, you can see more detailed information about the note itself: its title, creation date, number of attachments and other details. The Notes Manager is accessed through the browser start page menu.

According to the developer's statement, the following features are available in the note manager:

  • Text formatting: You can insert hyperlinks into text, format it using common styles such as bold, italic, and headers using the toolbars at the top, or keyboard shortcuts. More options are available using Markdown formatting.
  • WYSIWYG editor: Visual editor What you see is what you get - "what you see, what you get" - allows you to quickly make changes to documents in its stylized form.
  • Search for text - Ctrl + F opens a search for the note text.
  • Undo/Redo: CTRL + Z undoes the last action, and Ctrl + Y returns undone changes;
  • Word count: The number of characters and words is displayed at the end of the note.
  • Attachments: The corresponding button on the right side of the top pane of the edit window allows you to add images and other files to the note.
  • Full-Screen Editing: Notes can be edited both in full-screen mode and in the note tree, which can be sorted by title, content, creation date, associated address, or number of attachments.
  • New Notes: New notes can be created through the context menu directly from the web pages you are viewing, using quick commands, and can be deleted and organized into folders.
  • Note Search: The ability to search notes with a full-text search window right at the top.

As noted in Vivaldi, synchronization of notes on computers and devices Android is protected by end-to-end. enciphering Custom on data is stored your own protected servers Vivaldi located in. Iceland Users can safely create and view notes on different devices. The user can start writing a note on his Android device and finish it later or simply view it on his computer. The note manager reflects the philosophy of Vivaldi, which is that all the necessary tools in are browser built-in. The Note Manager built into the browser makes it possible to use potentially dangerous extensions and third-party ones less. applications

With the Custom Menus feature, users can elevate frequently used features to the top of the menu, providing faster access and giving the browser personality. Also, users can add items that are originally missing from the menu, but are necessary for users to work. Also, some items can be completely removed from the menu. Users can customize their menu through "Settings → Appearance → Menu," emphasized in Vivaldi.

The presented desktop version of Vivaldi, according to the developer, received speed improvements, including faster launches and tabbed work.

Vivaldi 3.0 with built-in "surveillance" protection and the first version of the mobile browser for Android

On April 22, 2020, the company Vivaldi Technologies announced the release of Vivaldi 3.0 for desktop computers and the release of the first version of the mobile browser Vivaldi for devices running. Android

Vivaldi
File:Aquote1.png
For April 2020, we are going through difficult times when millions of people around the world are forced to work remotely, and the browser begins to take a leading role among all software. Updated versions of Vivaldi, desktop and mobile, have enough functionality to satisfy even the most demanding users.

narrated by Jon von Techner, director of Vivaldi
File:Aquote2.png

According to the company, Vivaldi is a browser with built-in protection against "surveillance" thanks to the integration of Tracker Radar from DuckDuckGo, which provides simple and effective protection against attempts by some websites to track user activity.

Vivaldi

Also in the desktop version of Vivaldi, the addition of functions continues, including a clock with a timer, improved spatial navigation and a large list of browser configuration options.

The mobile version of Vivaldi, which has wide functionality, comes out with a built-in ad blocker - the most popular feature on Android devices, as well as protection against "surveillance," ensuring fast, safe and efficient operation on the network.

Vivaldi does not track the activity of its users, and now it does not allow everyone else to do this either. The built-in blocker neutralizes attempts by some sites to collect information about user activity on the network. This tool was able to appear in the Vivaldi browser thanks to the integration of Tracker Radar from DuckDuckGo, which uses constantly updated lists of unreliable websites.

File:Aquote1.png
While the means of tracking users are becoming more sophisticated, our Tracker Radar uses modern technologies to recognize and block them. And through a partnership with Vivaldi, these technologies are becoming available to a large number of users, providing an easy way to maintain privacy.

narrated by Gabrielle Weinberg, CEO and founder of DuckDuckGo
File:Aquote2.png

The "surveillance" blocker is controlled through a shield icon located in the address bar. The icon informs the user about the current level of protection for the page being viewed.

There are three levels of blocking available, with the user being able to both use one common level for all sites and set a customization for each site. More options for configuring the blocker are in the browser settings, in the Privacy section.

Vivaldi

In particular, in the settings, users can place some websites in the exclusion list, as well as more fine-tune the lock for each website.

In addition to blocking "surveillance," it is possible to block unwanted ads on viewed pages. This avoids the need to install additional extensions in the browser that can violate user privacy and slow down the browser.

By default, Ad Blocker is disabled so users can decide for themselves which websites can make money by showing ads. Vivaldi allows users to manage their own level of protection against unwanted ads.

The total number of blocked "surveillance" attempts and advertisements can be viewed by clicking on the blocker icon in the address bar. The list of exceptions for blocking can be edited in the settings.

Vivaldi offers a tool for speeding up work in the browser - spatial navigation. It allows you to browse the web using the minimum set of keys.

In the updated version of the browser, it is possible to move between links on the page with the Shift key held down and using the arrow keys, which greatly speeds up work.

The clock button displays the current time, including using the second hand. Clicking on the clock opens access to the built-in timer and alarm clock, which the user can reconfigure at his discretion. Additionally, the user can create their own pre-installed alarms for various needs.

Other features of Vivaldi include:

  • Multifunctional sidebar - on it, the user can work with bookmarks, downloads, view history, manage browser windows, create notes and add their own web panels for any website.
  • Tab management - grouping, renaming and searching for tabs, docking, unloading from memory, mute, viewing several tabs in one window - this is only a small part of the functions available when working with tabs in the Vivaldi browser.
  • Built-in tools - taking screenshots, viewing image properties, notes with the ability to take screenshots and rich text.
  • Search for visited websites in browsing history, keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures.
  • Synchronize data between devices using end-to-end encryption.
  • Customizable interface - themes, scaling, reading mode, Express Panels, and more.
  • Check-in and jump-in functions to speed up browsing history navigation. Assigning identifiers to search engines and switching them on the fly.

After several months of beta testing, the first stable version of Vivaldi for Android is being released. It is supported on devices running Android version 5 and higher, as well as on tablets and Chromobooks.

In Vivaldi, users can see all open tabs and switch between them easily. Vivaldi for Android offers a desktop-style solution - a tab bar at the top of the screen. It simplifies work with many tabs, but can be disabled by the user in the browser settings to free up screen space.

Also, to improve the comfort of working on devices with a small screen, Vivaldi has a convenient interface for working in both vertical and horizontal viewing modes. To save screen space, when viewing pages, panels with buttons are hidden outside the screen boundary. And for users of devices with a large screen who prefer to view not mobile, but full versions of websites, the corresponding browser setting allows you to enable this default mode for all pages viewed.

Vivaldi provides speed and privacy instead of advertising and "surveillance." As in the desktop version, DuckDuckGo's Tracker Radar lock lists are used to block "surveillance."

By default, ad blocking and "surveillance" are disabled, but users can enable it using a shield icon located in the address bar or directly in the browser settings.

The lock icon in the address bar shows the lock mode on the page being viewed, and also allows you to quickly change the mode when browsing websites.

Additional protection of user data is provided by private tabs, when working with which the browser does not save search and viewing history, removes cookies and temporary files from the browser at the end of work.

Third-party servers are not used - Vivaldi stores all synchronization data encrypted on the company's own servers in Iceland.

One finger movement allows you to move between open regular and private tabs, access recently closed tabs or tabs opened on another device synchronized with the current one. Instead of copying the page address, you can use the tab cloning option in the context menu.

You can create short records while browsing pages and synchronize them between devices using the notes function. In addition, you can create and share snapshots of the entire page, including the invisible part, or only the visible screen.

You can create multiple Express Panels for different tasks, categorize bookmarks, group them into folders, and simply swap them using simple finger-taps. You can also drag and drop folders and bookmark files on the Quick View toolbar (and even edit them). You can switch between different search engines instantly using prefixes in the address bar. It is possible to choose, if necessary, a light or dark theme of the browser interface.

By opening the browser settings, you can see a lot of useful options and settings:

  • Close tabs with one touch, turning on the option Close tabs with a shift in the settings.
  • Resize cells using the Small Icons option.
  • Free up display space by selecting Hide Status Bar.
  • Enable Scroll bars for internal pages to see their length.
  • Use the Enable full version option to display the full version of websites.
  • In the Accessibility section, use the Simplified web browsing option to disable interfering items on pages (where this is supported).

Vivaldi 2.10

On December 19, 2019, the company Vivaldi Technologies announced the release of Vivaldi 2.10 - offering improved compatibility with various websites thanks to the change. identifications browser

Vivaldi 2.10

According to the company, the Vivaldi browser is based on the Chromium kernel and can work with any websites that work with this kernel. Unfortunately, quite often Vivaldi has encountered the problem of an "unsupported browser" on many websites.

It was not uncommon for this to happen because websites on which the Vivaldi browser could operate deliberately blocked it, finding the word "Vivaldi" in the browser ID bar. There were also cases of blocking by companies creating competing products, and simply ignoring by some major players in the Internet industry market.

Vivaldi users have consistently received appropriate warning messages offering to update their browser to access the website. Vivaldi developers tried to add the appropriate patches to the browser, but such cases are becoming more and more difficult to respond to.

Starting with this update, users will encounter the above problem much less often. The developers decided to change the identification of the Vivaldi browser by changing the User Agent line.

When connecting to a website, the browser sends it its identifier - the User Agent string, which contains the version number and operating system, so that the website sends the appropriately generated data to the browser.

Over time, this technology began to be used not always in the right way, leading to the emergence of the so-called "browser sniffing," constantly criticized, but all the time used for unfair competition.

File:Aquote1.png
We put the name of our browser in the User Agent in order to declare our presence to the world. However, not everyone liked our presence, which led to numerous cases of blocking Vivaldi by various services and websites. This is why we have made changes in this update that will allow many services to fix their work at Vivaldi

Vivaldi already provides users with the ability to plan a change of themes on their own schedule - allowing them to more flexibly control the appearance of the browser depending on the time of day.

Users can now synchronize this Vivaldi function with their system schedule so that the transition between light and dark themes occurs simultaneously in all applications on the system. Access to this option is located in the browser settings, in the Topics section.

Other changes and improvements to the Vivaldi 2.10 browser include:

  • Improving the operation of the address bar during keyboard control
  • Improve the ability to hide and display extension icons for users working with multiple extensions
  • Improving Fast Command Performance
  • Significant reduction in default bookmarks

The release of the second beta version of Vivaldi for Android

The Vivaldi Express Bar provides users with quick, one-touch access to their favorite websites and services. The following improvements have appeared in the updated version of the browser:

  • Speed up the process of dragging cells to the Quick View panel.
  • A cell editing function that opens with a long touch and allows you to edit or delete a cell through the context menu.
  • Add a cell to the current folder by touching the "+" button, or touch this button for a long time to add a new Quick Info panel or create a folder.

When this option is enabled in the browser settings, all web pages on the device will be displayed in full view, as on a personal computer.

Now you can delete all bookmarks and notes placed in the cart with one touch. Using the "Clear Cart" icon on the corresponding screens, you can delete the entire contents of the cart.

The updated Vivaldi widget allows you to set the search from the home screen of the device through the default search engine installed in Vivaldi.

The improvements affected the icons of the main panels of the browser, as well as background pictures used on various browser screens. In addition to fixed bugs and flaws, the developers have done a lot of work to stabilize the browser code.

Vivaldi can now be installed on devices running Chrome OS. This is the first step in the development of such devices, in the future it is planned to improve this support.

Beta browser release for Android devices

On September 9, 2019, Vivaldi announced the release of a full-featured beta browser for mobile devices running Android.

Vivaldi announced the release of a beta version of the browser for mobile devices running Android

The task of Vivaldi is to make a browser that allows you to perform familiar tasks as the user wants without violating privacy. According to the developer, Vivaldi is the most customizable browser on the market, while not tracking user activity on the network. And the mobile version of the Vivaldi browser follows the same principles.

As noted in Vivaldi, the browser is developing following the requests of its users. Therefore, it has a single interface for all platforms, which is easy to use. Vivaldi for Android complements its desktop version. computers It has a similar design, and also contains a set of built-in functions familiar to Vivaldi users, including a sidebar, Express panel, notes and a screenshot function. And, of course, among the functions of the browser there is the ability to safely synchronize data between different devices.

As in the desktop version, after launching Vivaldi for Android, users get to the Express Panel, a function that allows you to keep popular websites literally at hand. In the lower left corner of the browser interface there is a button for opening panels, which opens access to bookmarks, history, notes and downloads. The tab radio button at the bottom right allows you to quickly find the desired tab among open, in viewing history, among private tabs, or even among tabs opened on another device. There is also an option to open recently closed tabs.

Speed up with Express Bar and bookmarks in Vivaldi for Android

The address bar of the mobile browser allows you to search using prefixes for various search engines, as well as use short bookmark names for their faster search and opening. The basic functions of the browser are located at a distance of one touch to the screen - horizontal and vertical navigation working on Express panels, side panel control and tab switching.

According to the developer, Vivaldi has a wide range of functions that increase the convenience and efficiency of working on the network. These functions include:

  • Quick creation of notes. A feature that allows users to save important information even on a mobile phone. Notes can be used to quickly save ideas, useful information or interesting quotes from the network without the need to launch an additional application, which saves limited resources of mobile devices. Users can safely sync notes between all devices they use.
  • Speed up work thanks to the Express Panel and bookmarks. Vivaldi's built-in Express Bar allows you to quickly access frequently visited resources and helps organize a list of bookmarks that will be displayed on a new empty tab. Users can create multiple dashboards for different tasks and categories of bookmarks, and group bookmarks into folders, providing quick access to important and frequently used resources. The bookmark manager allows users to add links to various websites, as well as edit descriptions and assign short names to bookmarks, which speed up the search for the desired bookmarks in the address bar.

One-touch tab management in Vivaldi for Android
  • Controls one-touch tabs. Tabs are one of the basic functions of modern browsers and Vivaldi allows you to manage them on mobile devices as easily as on personal computers. For example, instead of copying the page address and inserting this link in a new tab to create a copy of an already open page, you can use the tab clone option on the shortcut menu. Using the Vivaldi tab switching function, users can quickly search in one move among open tabs, private tabs, recently closed tabs, or even among tabs opened on another device.
  • Search and quickly switch search services. Users can use the address bar to search for information on the network. In Vivaldi, using various prefixes, the search can be carried out in any of the search engines installed in the browser without changing the browser settings. You just need to add one letter before the search word (for example, type "d" for DuckDuckGo or "e" for Ecosia) through the space, which will allow you to use the specified search engines.
  • Privacy of tabs. The user can use private mode when working on a mobile device - in this case, all information about the page viewed will be deleted when it is closed. In private mode, the mobile device will not save browsing history, cookies and temporary files. For example, if a user has allowed his friend to use the Internet, he can use Vivaldi private mode to check his mail or social media account without leaving garbage and unwanted files on the device.

Privacy of tabs in Vivaldi for Android
  • Synchronization on the go, easy and safe. Users can synchronize their browser data between different devices. You can choose which types of data you want to synchronize, including bookmarks and the Express Panel, saved passwords and form data for autocomplete, as well as the history of the entered addresses and notes. All synchronized data is encrypted and never transmitted in clear text. For additional security, no third-party servers are used for synchronization - only Vivaldi servers are used for this service.
  • Taking screenshots. Users can create screenshots of both the entire visible page and only the selected part of it using another function. You can also take a screenshot of the entire page, including the part that is not included in the screen of the mobile device.
  • The ability to remove unnecessary when reading. The user can use read mode by enabling it in the browser settings. This function will try to remove from the page as much as possible all elements that distract from reading or clutter the device screen.

As of September 2019, Vivaldi supports Android version 5 and higher. Support tablets is still in the works.

Vivaldi 2.7

On August 21, 2019, the company Vivaldi introduced an updated version of browser Vivaldi 2.7, offering control over media playback data on viewed pages, enhanced access user profile capabilities, an updated status bar, and several fixes to boost safety online experience.

Vivaldi unveils updated version of Vivaldi 2.7 browser

According to the developer, in the presented version of the Vivaldi browser, users were able to avoid the annoying effect of automatic playback of media content on the pages being viewed. The mute option on the so far unused tabs was one of the most popular requests among browser users. In Vivaldi 2.7, it is enough to mute the sound on unused tabs using the corresponding item of the tab context menu.

Sound control on tabs in Vivaldi 2.7

This option appeared in addition to the existing sound control tools on the tabs located in the browser settings, in the "Tabs" section, "Tab Capabilities" section.

Flash support. Despite the fact that flash technology is gradually going down in history, there are still many websites that use flash, and many users who use these websites, according to Vivaldi. Therefore, in the Vivaldi 2.7 version, an option was added that allows you to slightly extend the life of the flash for users and forcibly enable support for this content. The corresponding configuration item is located in the "Web Pages" section of the "Plugins" section.

Informative status panel. Volumetric pages can load for quite a long time, leaving users wondering at what stage the data download process is, noted in Vivaldi. The presented version of the Vivaldi browser has improved the status bar located at the bottom of the browser window. It will display information about what is happening at the moment with the download process.

Improved stability for MacOS. Vivaldi developers have made great efforts to improve browser stabilization, which will reduce the number of problems associated with unauthorized closure of the application, according to Vivaldi.

Vivaldi 2.6

On June 20, 2019, Vivaldi announced the release of an updated version of the Vivaldi 2.6 browser, offering users privacy and personalization capabilities.

Vivaldi 2.6

According to the company, this update improves user safety thanks to built-in ad blocking tools and unwanted websites. Users also receive updated navigation methods, profile settings and other improvements aimed at improving the customizability of the Vivaldi browser interface.

The updated Vivaldi browser, which has built-in ad blocking tools, protects the privacy of users when working on the network. In addition to turning off potentially dangerous ads, it allows you to neutralize pop-ups that prevent users from leaving intrusive websites.

The blocker works with a constantly updated block list located on the company's encrypted servers and enabled by default. In the future, the browser automatically updates the block list from the server during everyday work. You can disable the flowlist in the browser settings in the "Privacy" section. This option expands Vivaldi's ability to protect the privacy of its users.

In the presented version of the browser, users can easily change the size of the Express Panel cells, increasing or decreasing them, as well as scaling according to the number of columns.

In Vivaldi 2.5, users can easily resize Express Panel cells

Users who constantly work in a browser with a large number of tabs will be able to evaluate the options for selecting tabs that have appeared, according to Vivaldi. Using Quick Commands, keyboard shortcuts, or mouse gestures, users can select previous, next, or related (open from the active page) tabs.

Vivaldi 2.4

On March 27, 2019, Vivaldi Technologies introduced the next version of the Vivaldi 2.4 browser.

Vivaldi 2.4 offers users the ability to drag buttons between panels or hide them altogether, additional ways to manage bookmarks, the ability to work in a browser with several user profiles, and also includes a small built-in calculator that can perform simple calculations right in the browser interface.

File:Aquote1.png
"We aim to make Vivaldi the most customizable browser possible. The update presented is another step in this direction, giving users the opportunity to get more opportunities at a lower cost, while using the most intuitive and convenient way. "

Panel Setup

Toolbars are not only the face of the browser, but also form the style of use of many of its functions. According to the developer, Vivaldi provides users with the opportunity to decide for themselves which controls and in what order should be located on the browser panels in order to ensure ease of use and quick access to the most popular functions. The first step in this direction was the ability to drag control buttons between panels or hide these buttons from the Vivaldi interface, leaving only those necessary for everyday work.

According to information for March 2019, Vivaldi offers the transfer of buttons between the status panel and the address panel. Thus, if desired, you can place, for example, a button for taking screenshots or placing pages next to the address bar, and the button for updating the page can be easily placed on the status bar at the bottom of the browser window.

File:Aquote1.png
"Setting up a toolbar is not trivial - it's much bigger than it sounds. The Vivaldi 2.4 interface is more customizable thanks to redesigned and updated buttons. We also redrawn the icons on the toolbar to make them more understandable and friendly. These changes lay the foundation for additional features and settings in the future. "
File:Aquote2.png

According to the developer, the user can quickly change the Vivaldi interface, making it as loaded as possible with controls or vice versa - lightweight to a minimum. To drag buttons between panels, hold down the Shift button. In order to undo all changes and restore the original appearance of the panels, it is enough to use the corresponding item of the panel context menu or through the browser settings in the "Appearance" section.

Bookmark bar becomes more powerful

Working with bookmarks is one of the most used functions. Vivaldi provides extensive options for managing and accessing bookmarks according to user requests.

Working with bookmarks in Vivaldi 2.4

Vivaldi 2.4 received a function that allows you to quickly create a folder with thematic bookmarks. For example, if a user searches for information on some product on different sites, he can save them all in one bookmark folder for viewing later or even on another computer - thanks to the synchronization built into Vivaldi. It is enough to select the required tabs (using Shift or Ctrl), and then send them to bookmarks using the context menu of the tabs, quick commands or a combination of keys. All tabs will be added to the folder with the creation date in the name, and in the future you can work with them, as with ordinary bookmarks, the developer emphasized.

The context menu of folders and bookmarks in the bookmark bar is another popular feature that came to Vivaldi thanks to user requests. For March 2019, the feature is available for those using Windows and Linuxoperative systems.

Working in the browser in multidisciplinary mode

In the presented version of the Vivaldi browser, it became possible to create several user profiles that allow several users to work with one copy of the browser without the need to start different sessions of work in the operating system or create several copies of the Vivaldi browser on one computer.

Working in the Vivaldi 2.4 browser in multidisciplinary mode

Each profile saves an individual set of extensions, bookmarks, Express Panel cells, cookies, stories and much more. Users can also customize the different appearance of the browser for each profile. Each profile can be given its own name to provide the best possible experience with this feature.

Switching between profiles is carried out using the corresponding button in the address panel. In the menu that opens, you can select another profile, as well as go to the profile management manager. You can also access profile management in the browser settings in the Address bar section.

User profiles can be synchronized between different copies of the Vivaldi browser, the developer noted.

Built-in calculator and other changes

The calculator built into Quick Commands allows you to perform simple calculations right in the browser interface. If you click F2/⌘E to open Quick Commands, enter an equation, then below the input line you can see the result of the calculations. When you press Enter, the result is copied to the clipboard.

Built-in calculator in Vivaldi 2.4

As noted in Vivaldi Technologies, the presented version of the browser adds several other features requested by users, including:

  • Improved tab grouping control - Users can enable or disable the ability to create tab groups by dragging and dropping. Users can also specify the length of delay when dragging tabs, preventing accidental grouping.
  • Renaming a double-click tab group allows you to better organize your work with a large number of tabs and groups.
  • When you search for the selected word using the context menu, the results will open in the background tab. (Settings > Search)

Vivaldi 2.3

On February 6, 2019, the company Vivaldi Technologies announced the release of an update browser Vivaldi that includes auto grouping tabs. The developers also expanded the ability to customize the drop-down list of the address bar to simplify access users to frequently visited web pages and made other changes that improve the usability of the browser.

Auto Group Linked Tabs

According to the developer, the Vivaldi tab grouping function allows you to combine open pages into groups by simply dragging the tab. This allows you to expand the number of open tabs in the panel by saving space for displaying them. Users can create many groups of tabs, give them names, pin, place in one window, unload from memory and mute sound on all pages of the group.

Auto-grouping related tabs in Vivaldi 2.3

Vivaldi 2.3 represents another improvement in this function. It consists in the ability to automatically group related tabs.

This option is located in the Browser Settings, Tabs section → Position of a new tab → Group with Linked. The option is enabled by default and allows you to open links in a new page grouped with the currently active page. This browser behavior allows you to make the user's work with many tabs, for example, on a search service, more convenient, according to Vivaldi Technologies.

Address Bar Drop-Down List

Vivaldi does not just offer a drop-down list of recently visited pages and entered addresses, in Vivaldi users decide for themselves what data should be displayed in this list - in the browser settings, you can select the types of data that will be in this drop-down list of the address bar, the developer emphasized.

Address bar drop-down list in Vivaldi 2.3

Vivaldi 2.3 has the ability to add the most frequently visited pages to this list. According to the developer, this makes it easier and faster for users to access websites visited daily.

The option is disabled by default. Users can enable it in the browser settings, Address bar → Drop-down list → Frequently visited pages

Improved screenshot experience

Using Vivaldi's built-in screenshot feature, you can take a snapshot of both the entire page and only the selected area of the screen, copying the result to the clipboard or saving to disk. computer In the updated version of the browser, the developers improved this function by giving users the opportunity to independently design a template for the name of the snapshots being created, adding a date and other data to it, noted in Vivaldi Technologies.

2018

Vivaldi 2.1: "Quick Teams"

On October 25, 2018, Vivaldi Technologies introduced Vivaldi browser version 2.1. Vivaldi is a browser that allows any user to control their work on the network. The browser is interesting in that it already contains many tools that significantly increase the convenience and efficiency of working on the Internet.

Using "Quick Commands," the user may not remember hundreds and thousands of shortcuts. It is enough to start entering the name of the planned action in the corresponding field in order to control any component of the browser, in addition to the network search carried out from the same field.

"Quick Commands"

By default, the Quick Commands window opens using F2, closes with the ESC key, and this window is also available through the Tools menu. Quick commands increase user speed and save time in ways such as:

  • View a list of open tabs: Finding and viewing a specific tab can become more difficult if you open many tabs. Viewing the list of open tabs through Quick Commands is very easy. Navigation through this list is carried out using the arrow keys or the Tab key.
  • Searching for tabs using keywords: If many tabs are open, scrolling the list may not be very effective, instead the user can search among the open tabs by the keyword.
  • Search browsing history: Quick commands help you search for previously opened pages. This is very useful when the user does not remember the exact address or title of the previously viewed page.
  • Command Search: Quick commands give the user full functionality of the main application menu. You can simultaneously search for and perform various actions using the Quick Commands interface. During the search, the actions will display results that are available to run by clicking or using the shortcut keys. One click - and the command is executed. Moreover, users have access to the full list of shortcuts and can remind them of themselves at any time.
  • Fine-tuning Quick Commands in Settings: With simple settings, users can easily change the categories they can search in the Quick Commands window. For example, you can display only the history of the pages visited, while disabling the search among the bookmarks.
  • Quick bookmark access: Quick commands can speed up access to frequently visited websites. By turning on the "By Short Name" option in the settings, you can ensure that the required tab opens automatically simply if the short name matches, without even using the Enter key.

Users can now easily create notes using the Quick Commands window. Notes are another built-in feature of the Vivaldi browser.

Also, when you enter text in the Quick Commands window, the contents of the corresponding notes will also appear in the search results. This is another quick way to find the right notes.

These small improvements will help significantly increase the efficiency of the daily work of journalists, scientists and all users who appreciated the convenience of the notes.

Vivaldi offers users several convenient ways to zoom pages or the browser interface if the text or window elements seem too small. In this update, another convenient function for this set has appeared.

Users can now enter "interface scale" or "page scale" in the Quick Commands window and specify a percentage to zoom in or out. When you press Enter, the action is applied to the page or browser interface. This allows you to quickly change the scale without wasting time opening settings or step-by-step change using a slider.

The update also includes support for the free AV1 open video codec. This codec is actively used for streaming video and enabling its support in the browser allows users to avoid problems using closed proprietary[2] codecs.]

Main functions

As of September 2018, among the main features of the web browser:

  • Advanced Tab Management - Allows you to group tabs, place them in the same window at the same time, drag and drop, and dock.
  • Sidebar for quick access to bookmarks, downloads, displaying tabs as a tree, viewing history and favorite sites.
  • Built-in features, including screenshots, notes, and viewing picture properties.
  • History of visits to websites with statistics and charts, from which the user can determine his browsing habits.
  • Flexible configuration of the browser interface using user topics and other elements.
  • Keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures for quick browser control.

Vivaldi 2.0

On September 26, 2018, Vivaldi announced the release of Vivaldi 2.0. The update includes features such as synchronization, floating sidebars, variable width of placed tabs, and even more than 1,500 improvements made in the browser since the release of the first version.

Vivaldi 2.0

What's new in Vivaldi 2.0?

Vivaldi is designed to solve real-world tasks that users require.

Using a convenient customizable interface, choosing different themes and changing the style of working with browser components, users can create an application that fully meets their interests, habits and personal work requirements from the very beginning of using Vivaldi.

Users can adapt the browser to their needs, changing not only the appearance of the browser, but also the location of its elements without any restrictions. Vivaldi settings provide:

  • Vertically position the tab bar, move the address bar down (or turn it off completely)
  • Adjust the scale of the interface and web pages, as well as read mode for a more comfortable display of text
  • Adaptively change color themes based on the Web sites you are viewing
  • Using Different Scheduled Themes
  • Customizable Express Panel and Window Background

Vivaldi allows you to easily and reliably synchronize user data between several browser versions installed on different computers. This data includes bookmarks and the Express Panel, saved passwords and form autocomplete data, the history of the entered addresses, extensions and notes.

All synchronized data, including user passwords, are encrypted and are not sent between Vivaldi browsers in clear text. In order to further protect the data, only Vivaldi's own servers are used to store it.

The long-awaited data synchronization can be activated by the user either in the Vivaldi settings, or using the cloud button in the browser status bar.

For optimal use of screen space and ease of work, the Vivaldi browser offers a sidebar - an expandable, multifunctional tool that includes Downloads, Bookmarks, History, Web Panels, Window Panel and Notes.

Sidebar

Web panels allow users to place their favorite web applications or websites on a dedicated sidebar while viewing the main window. Starting with this version of the browser, these panels can 'float' over the main page without having to reformat the contents of the window when opened. Also now there are icons of recommended web panels from among popular web services, social networks and frequently visited websites.

Vivaldi 2.0 has extensive tab management capabilities, including grouping, renaming and searching, as well as docking tabs, dragging, unloading tabs from computer memory, mute tabs if necessary. Also, users have several ways to access these functions. Adapting to user habits is one of the key tasks of the developers of the Vivaldi browser.

One of the most popular features, Tab Placement - opening multiple tabs simultaneously in one window - now offers the ability to resize the displayed pages by simply dragging and dropping borders. At the same time, the state of the changed pages remains the same even after restarting the browser and when opening a saved session.

Also, the popular function of visual scrolling of open pages received an additional option to view the list of page headers, which allows you to find the desired tab even faster.

Vivaldi offers a very powerful tool - Viewing History. Users can explore their own habits using the statistics and visual graphics featured in the updated viewing history.

Viewing history

Built-in Vivaldi 2.0 tools help users work online easier and faster. You can take screenshots of pages and share them with other users using the "Screenshot" function, create "Notes" using Markdown markup.

Vivaldi 1.15

On April 25, 2018, Vivaldi announced the release of version 1.15 of its web browser, which gives users even more options to customize their appearance and functionality.

Vivaldi 1.15 web browser

According to representatives of Vivaldi, the updated browser allows you to express your personal style thanks to the expanded support for topics. Users can customize the appearance of the browser at will: select and edit topics, schedule their application depending on the time of day and their mood. In addition to this, the Vivaldi 1.15 version added the ability to select an image to use as the background of the browser window.

Vivaldi 1.15 personalised look: Users can customize the browser's look as they wish.

Users can use the pre-installed version of the picture or choose their own picture as such. You can also experiment with the background of the window in the theme settings. The window background function is located in the "Appearance" section of the Vivaldi browser settings.

Vivaldi has noted another update - the Bookmarks menu, available in the main menu. Thanks to this, users of the Vivaldi browser have access to bookmarks not only from the bookmark bar, bookmark manager, sidebar or Express panel, but also from the main menu, which will be especially convenient for users who prefer to work in the browser using the keyboard.

The Bookmarks menu is available in the main menu

Also, several more improvements were made in browser version 1.15:

  • Screenshot: Added to remember the options you selected when you took a screenshot, so the selection options will be saved after the browser restarts.
  • Full screen mode: For those users who prefer to use the entire screen space to display the pages being viewed, the ability to access sidebars and the address bar using shortcuts has been added.
  • Audio playback: This version of the browser fixes a number of problems with audio playback in HTML5 when the audio was not played or played at the wrong speed.

DuckDuckGo as default search engine

On March 22, 2018, Vivaldi Technologies announced that the Vivaldi browser had the ability to install DuckDuckGo as the default search engine for Private Windows.

Партнёрство Vivaldi и DuckDuckGo защитит конфиденциальность пользователей в Internet

Using a private window in Vivaldi provides increased security when browsing websites, since the browser does not save the history of visited pages, cookies and temporary files.

By opening a private window in the updated version of the Vivaldi browser, users will see DuckDuckGo as the default search resource. Now they will be able not only to maintain confidentiality when working on the network, but also to search for information in safe mode. The integration of this search resource into the browser will make it impossible for third-party resources to collect information about browser users.

File:Aquote1.png
Many users fear that their personal data may become available to outsiders, so it is necessary to protect our personal lives. We are glad to unite with DuckDuckGo in creating solutions that guarantee careful treatment of users' personal information, - said Jon von Tetzchner.

Vivaldi 1.14

The vertical reading mode gives Vivaldi users the ability to read large texts with much greater comfort, removing all unnecessary and distracting elements from the page. Also in this mode, users can change the font, adjust the height of lines and columns, switch the background from dark to light.

Vivaldi became the first browser to support the ability to read texts with a vertical writing style. This feature will be extremely useful for reading Chinese (written in a simplified and traditional version of this language), Japanese and Korean texts. Users will be able to read these texts conveniently and without distracting page design elements. You can enable this function in the browser settings.

Markdown text markup support in Notes

In each new Vivaldi release, we try to add new unique features that allow users to eliminate the need to install extensions and additional programs. Notes are one of the most popular browser features along with tab grouping, tab placement and a powerful browsing history. You can create notes on the side of the browser by annotating sites and attaching screenshots of the sites you are viewing.

In the new version of Vivaldi 1.14, the note function has been improved by adding Markdown text markup support, which allows you to intuitively apply the formatting used by many sites, including GitHub and Reddit.

Users can select headers, bold, unnumbered lists in the note text. This feature will be useful for users, allowing you to use notes to create e-mail texts and more comfortable organization of your daily work. In addition to Markdown markup, viewing notes in a regular format is also supported.

Markdown markup support improves the productivity of users, especially bloggers, journalists and researchers, providing direct text formatting. With Notes, it is much more convenient to write long letters, books and other texts.

Rearrange Web Panels

Implementing user wishes and improving current functionality have always been the main elements of Vivaldi's strategy. The new release of Vivaldi has significantly improved one of the main functions of the browser - the web panel.

Using web panels, you can add individual sites to the Vivaldi sidebar, which will be displayed along with the main browser view window. This feature is very convenient for working on social networks, when browsing news sites without switching between tabs. Users can also adjust the width of individual web panels for a more comfortable display of content.

In version 1.14, users can regroup the web panels on the browser sidebar as they see fit by simply dragging and dropping. This way you can quickly sort web pages depending on their importance and make working in the browser more interactive and convenient.

Manually sort the search engine list

Vivaldi gives users complete freedom in choosing Internet search engines. Users can set their default search engine or choose an alternative option, such as using DuckDuckGo, which protects personal information, or Ecosia, which is designed to protect the environment. A new search engine can be added instantly by right-clicking, which improves efficiency.

The new version of the browser implements the function of manually sorting the list of search resources, which many Vivaldi users asked for, and improves the flexibility of the browser.

Using the new search manager, users can easily drag and drop search engines with the mouse (or move them using the keyboard) and arrange them in a convenient order for themselves.

Vivaldi 1.8

On March 29, 2017, Vivaldi Technologies announced the release of the Vivaldi browser. The software has been modernized with notes, improved sound control in tabs and other options.

The history viewer displays a detailed report on website visits, it is supported by statistics and visual prompts.

Screenshot of the software window, (2017)
File:Aquote1.png
We wanted to make the viewing story more useful than ever before. Instead of having to scroll through hundreds of lines with links, Vivaldi users get access to a detailed history overview presented visually. This makes it possible to analyze the work on the network, and also helps to quickly find the links you need.
Jon
von Techner, chief executive of Vivaldi Technologies
File:Aquote2.png

In addition to the traditional link list, Vivaldi shows the history as a calendar with website visit statistics. Graphs and color scales display activity peaks and major trends in networking.

Access to this information helps you find the desired link, even if the user does not remember the keywords for the search. The history of Vivaldi provides more context for the search. Finding the link will be easier if the user remembers that he saw it on the day of the most active work on the network.

Vivaldi users can also view the history of visiting sites within certain dates by selecting the required days in the calendar.

File:Aquote1.png
The website history tool makes it possible to see what kind of data third-party organizations could collect. Instead of trying to monetize information about the work on the network of our users, we give this information to them - and only to them.
File:Aquote2.png

With access to detailed information, users can decide whether they need to make changes to the style of their work on the network, delete individual records or data.

  • Create notes by dragging text. In Vivaldi, you can add notes to the pages you are viewing. You can add notes from your browser and other applications. Users can also select text on a web page and, by right-clicking the shortcut menu, select Copy to Notes.
  • The release has improved the sound control in the tabs. Now you can choose one of three options - play sound in all tabs, in the active tab or in the background tabs, provided that the sound is not played in the main tab.
  • Option to enable or disable automatic updates for Windows
  • The ability to open links in the current tab from the context menu.
  • You can specify Quick View as the home page.
  • The ability to shade page tabs unloaded from memory.
  • When entering text in the address bar, all matches are highlighted in bold.
  • Improved Chromium string translation.
  • Searches for images from the context menu.

Vivaldi 1.7

On February 8, 2017, Vivaldi Technologies announced the release of the Vivaldi 1.7 browser version. It features screen capture tools, improved tab sound control, and a number of other modifications.

Vivaldi creates snapshots of web pages in the window. This feature allows you to save the entire web page as an image, including the invisible part that is not displayed in the browser window due to its large size. Vivaldi users were able to take pictures of the selected areas of the page, including the interface of the browser itself.

File:Aquote1.png
Today, sharing snapshots of web pages often replaces text communication. Instead of sending friends the address of a page containing something interesting, or going through the tedious process of creating, saving, editing and sending a page snapshot, Vivaldi browser users have a much more convenient tool that has many useful features and offers several ways to work with it.

Jon von Techner, CEO of Vivaldi Technologies
File:Aquote2.png

You can save a snapshot of a web page to disk in JPEG and PNG formats. The developers have added the ability to save snapshots to the clipboard of the operating system, which allows you to use snapshots to paste them into other applications, send them to social networks or web services.

The mute function in the Vivaldi tabs has been modified. Now it is possible to automatically determine the background page playing ads, music or videos and turn off the sound with one click at once on all tabs where playback mode is turned on. This opportunity can be useful for those who are used to working with many tabs in one session.

As part of the release changes:

  • Quick access to the contents of important pinned tabs (configurable delayed download).
  • System type of notifications in MacOS.
  • Custom top-level domains (.ru,.com, etc.).
  • The ability to hide extension buttons in the address bar.
  • Additional indication for unprotected HTTP websites.

Vivaldi 1.5

On November 22, 2016, Vivaldi Technologies announced the release of the Vivaldi 1.5 browser version.

The release includes many functions, including dragging individual and grouped tabs between windows, reading mode, delta update, and note capabilities.

The technology gives users the ability to change the style of lighting at home through a browser. This version offers a number of improvements, including:

  • updating the browser with miniature binary patches, in which only modified code is changed, to avoid downloading the installation file,
  • automatic screenshots in notes.

In the release, the developers included the ability to integrate Vivaldi with the color backlight system of the Philips Hue house. After turning on the "Hue" mode in the Vivaldi browser Theme Settings, lighting in the house will be controlled using Vivaldi - the browser will adjust the environment to the colors of the websites being viewed.

When implementing tab dragging functions, you have added the ability to drag several selected tabs and even entire groups at once in order to quickly move tabs between windows. Through these functions, working on the Internet will become easier and more comfortable, even when many tabs are open at the same time, the developer said. Grouping allows you to create tab "folders."

Vivaldi 1.5 Browser Ad, (2016)

The creators of the browser have improved the function of reading pages. When choosing the reading mode, it is possible to make adjustments to the display of ads, design elements of web pages, for comfortable reading of text.

Vivaldi implements a delta update for Windows, through which you can download only modified browser code, and not the entire installation file.

Many configuration options allow the Vivaldi browser to adapt to the needs and preferences of the user. Note functionality is improved. If you add a note to the selected text on the web page, the note will automatically include a screenshot of the page. The function is enabled by default and can be disabled in the browser settings.

We want our browser to be "intelligent" and offer users a new experience. Thinking outside the browser and integrating into the real world is what keeps our spirit of innovation and experimentation alive. We are open to new ideas and try to make working with the browser more creative and enjoyable. By listening to our users and implementing their ideas, we are constantly strengthening our relationship with them.

Millions of people have confirmed that they would like to have a browser that gives full control over the network. We create our browser together with our users. We have no investors who could dictate to us where and at what speed to develop, we do not plan to sell the company - we are here to improve our product. All we want is to give people a browser that they will be happy to use, and we will be glad that this browser will be Vivaldi.

Some Vivaldi options:

  • Grouping tabs. Vivaldi combines several open pages under one tab.
  • Places a group of tabs. Places a group of tabs in a single window. With multiple tab groups, it will look like working on multiple desktops.
  • Sessions. Saves the required set of tabs as a session to return to later
  • Notes. Lets you select a piece of text on a page and saves it as a note. Vivaldi can remember when and on which site the text was found and will offer to take a screenshot of the page.
  • Quick teams. Provide access to open tabs, bookmarks, history, settings, and more with quick commands.
  • Mouse gestures and hotkeys. Mouse gestures are used - they allow you to perform almost any action in the browser with one hand movement. Hotkeys do the same, but by pressing keyboard shortcuts.
  • Express panel. Sites and bookmarks are available from each new blank tab. Allows you to add groups and folders.
  • Manage bookmarks. Bookmarks are available in the sidebar, bookmark manager and bookmark bar, on the Quick View panel.
  • Web panels. Viewing sites in the Vivaldi sidebar is a way to follow tweets, VKontakte messages, Facebook or chat, in parallel with working in the main browser window. According to the developers, when working on the network from the workplace, this is the second notable option after the "Boss Button."
  • Personalization. Vivaldi adapts to user requests. Vivaldi is the most customizable browser - taking into account the wishes of millions of users. The company announced the presence of more than 1 million combinations of personalization of the Vivaldi browser.

The browser uses JavaScript and React to create an interface, Node.js. Vivaldi is being developed on the Chromium core, which provides fast and high-quality page loading.

Vivaldi 1.0 is available for download on the company's official website.
