Content

Windows NT 3.5 is the 32-bit operating system, continuation of a line of NT. Windows NT 3.5 is released by Microsoft corporation on September 21, 1994.

The version of Windows NT 3.5, as well as the previous Windows NT 3.1, is developed in two configurations: for the Windows NT Workstation 3.5 workstation and for the server - Windows NT Server 3.5.

Innovations

Windows NT 3.5 has numerous improvements and innovations in comparison with Windows NT 3.1:

  • The improved autorecognition of the equipment, possibility of the manual choice and configuring of network adapters if automatic recognition does not yield positive result.

  • Built-in compatibility with NetWare.

Possibility of accomplishment of a role of the gateway to NetWare networks so Windows NT computers can get access to files, printers and NetWare application servers. Windows NT starting with version 3.5 includes Microsoft Compatible Workstation Service for NetWare which allows to provide access to files, directories and printers on the Novell NetWare server. The transport protocol Microsoft NWLink IPX/SPX provides communication between the computer with Windows NT and NetWare the file server and the print server. It supports work with files and with print queues on NetWare the server.

New implementation of protocols of TCP/IP which provides the simple, powerful solution for network interconnection. In Windows NT there is a support of this protocol, starting with the very first version of this operating system. In addition, there are basic utilities, such as ftp, tftp, telnet, commands r *, arp, route and finger. With a release of version 3.5 there were new key properties which, on the one hand, simplified configuring and service, and with another - improved TCP/IP properties.

The RAS server can support up to 256 connections, instead of 64 in version 3.1 now.

Windows NT supports work with three file systems: NTFS FAT and HPFS. Thus, if before Windows NT setup on the computer were set to MS-DOS or OS/2, then there is no need to reformat a disk. A system will transform FAT or HPFS to NTFS, having saved all information on a disk. Inverse transformation is impossible.

  • Full support of storage of the built-in OLE objects 2.x and search of compound documents.

These opportunities include binding, embedding, linking with the built-in objects, "drag-and-drop" and OLE-Automation technologies.

  • Graphic opportunities of three-dimensional graphics of OpenGL API.

Graphic opportunities of three-dimensional graphics of OpenGL API are built in the Windows NT 3.5 operating system. OpenGL is the industrial and standard library of graphic functions, independent of the operating system, developed by Silicon Graphics company for the workstations. The developed functions of this library are required in that case when visualization of large projects and data is necessary. The typical tasks requiring it use is a CAD, the system of mechanical and industrial design, the program of statistical and scientific analysis.

Besides, the applications developed for MS Windows 3.x and MS-DOS, are executed more reliably as each application works in the address space now.

System Requirements

For work with Windows NT Workstation (Server) 3.5 it is required:

  • The computer with i386, i486 or Pentium processors with clock rate from 33 MHz and RAM from 12 (16) MB; or with the DEC Alpha processor and RAM from 16 (24) MB; or with the MIPS processor; or the computer with several processors.
  • Not less than 70 (90) MB of a free space on the hard drive.
  • Existence of the CD drive and mouse is desirable.
  • At net surfing, existence of the 16-or 32-bit Ethernet or Token Ring network interface card is required.
