2020: The announcement of ABB Wizard Easy Programming for development of application programs for YuMi with one manipulator

On June 25, 2020 the company ABB Group provided program Wizard Easy Programming. The Wizard Easy Programming program from ABB allows the beginning specialists on to robotics without special training to set, program and use robots, making them more available to solving of tasks on process automation. In more detail here.

2019: Announcement of the mobile laboratory YuMi robot

On October 9, 2019 AVV company reported that it opened in Houston the first international center of researches in the field of health care in a campus of the Texas medical center and showed a number of experimental technologies, including the mobile YuMi robot who will help the staff of laboratories and to perform laboratory and logistic works in hospitals.

YuMi

According to the company, the bimanous YuMi robot will be able independently to move, maneuvring between colleagues people, and will learn to find different routes from one place in another. The robot is intended for accomplishment of the various repeating long transactions, for example preparation of drugs, loading and unloading of centrifuges, dosing on drops, processings of liquids, collecting and sorting of test tubes and for many other.

In addition, the mobile YuMi robot will be involved in logistics of hospitals. So, YuMi will be able to issue drugs, to deliver them to the right place, to bring medicines to the staff of hospital or bed linen in chambers.

At Institute of innovations of TMC specialists of ABB will create the robots capable to replace the person in the repeating conventional processes requiring the accuracy and attention. Thanks to it employees will be able to devote the time and knowledge to more difficult transactions that, eventually, will allow to treat more patients. The analysis which is carried out by ABB shows that the automation equipment can accelerate accomplishment of the repeating tasks for 50% in comparison with manual work. Besides, robots can work day and night that too is important advantage.

The health sector actively changes after disruptive inventions in diagnostics and treatment of diseases. Along with it the industry should solve the whole complex of the current problems connected with aging of the population, growth of costs and deficit of medical staff around the world. Our medical research center based on TMC will participate in the solution of these vital issues together with researchers, scientists and doctors.

Sami Atiya, the president of "Robotics and Discrete Automation" business division of ABB told

The AVV medical research center also works on creation of YuMi robots who will load and unload centrifuges and to process test tubes. One more project — the IRB 1200 robot who will perform dosing of liquids on drops. The robotic systems facilitate accomplishment of such procedures routine for any medical laboratory as are capable to work flexibly and continuously, providing at the same time steadily high performance. It, in turn, will allow to increase capacity of laboratories, to increase quality and to minimize costs.

2017: The first concert with participation of YuMi as the conductor

On September 12, 2017 in Italy the first-ever concert under control of the conductor robot was held, CNBC reports.[1]

The bimanous YuMi robot developed by the Swedish producer ABB together with Philharmonic orchestra of the Italian city of Lucca accompanied the famous opera singer Andrea Bocelli at a gala concert in Verdi's theater of the city of Pisa. Unique representation was dated for the First international festival of robotics which was taking place in Pisa from September 7 to September 13.

YuMi robot conductor

From 18 musical fragments which sounded at a concert, the orchestra under control of YuMi played three works, including "Heart of beauties is inclined to treason" from the opera by Giuseppe Verdi of "Rigoletto" and a batch from the opera by Puccini of Gianni Schicchi which performed the tenor Andrea Bocelli and a soprano Maria Luigi of Borsi (Maria Luigia Borsi).

The Italian conductor Andrea Colombini helped to prepare YuMi for a performance. Process of "training" of the robot consisted of two stages: on the first YuMi remembered movements of the conductor what the programming method of the robot was applied by behavior to, and on the second there was coincidence tuning of movements and their synchronization with music.

All nuances of gestures of the conductor were reproduced with such accuracy which was inconceivable earlier. It is an improbable step forward, considering rigidity of movements at the previous models of robots — Kolombini in the blog wrote.

YuMi performance in Italy became a milestone event for his developer — the Swedish company ABB which provided the robot in April, 2015.

It should be noted that YuMi belongs to the class of so-called "collaborative" robots (from engl. collaborative robot) or kobot which are created to work near people, supplementing human opportunities. As demonstration of the capabilities of YuMi assembled the Rubik's Cube earlier and passed a thread in a needle.
