MGTS tests whitebox switches in preparation of network for a 5G

2019: Testing of whitebox network switches

On August 19, 2019 MGTS reported that it began with one of the first in Russia testing of the whitebox network switches providing use of the network operating systems not related to suppliers of the hardware of network whose application will allow to respond to requirements of standard 5G to speeds and volumes of data transmission without considerable costs for upgrade of network. Foreign and domestic suppliers of whitebox-switches and the software take part in testing of MGTS.

In whitebox-model, unlike traditional where the same vendor supplies both the equipment, and the software, a supplier of shell program is one producer, a hardware platform – another. The independent choice of the main functionality of the equipment simplifies its upgrade, allows to implement quicker services, to reduce capital and operating costs and to reduce payback periods of projects. The Whitebox-model works by the principle of modularity that allows to include only necessary functions in the software, without overpaying for not used preset functionality from vendor.

MGTS should will considerably to expand the port capacity of the equipment and to increase number of high-speed interfaces that can become possible thanks to transition to economic and flexible whitebox-model.

Tests will be complete by the end of 2019. If results of testing are successful, then MGTS will consider the possibility of use of whitebox-switches already in the nearest future in the Moscow region where the main construction of GPON network is concentrated.
