Project date: 2019/04

At the beginning of April, 2019 the large Japanese supermarket chain FamilyMart  announced the beginning of use of a system of face recognition which allows to pay purchases without involvement of cashiers.

To use the technology developed by Panasonic, buyers at first should be registered in a system, having sent the photo of the person and data of the bank card there.

After accomplishment of this simple procedure process of purchase of goods in shop significantly becomes simpler and accelerates. Products which the user wants to purchase give all the best on a special rack with cameras. The terminal will recognize the person and his purchase then it is only necessary to enter the PIN code and payment by the linked card will be made, and money is written off.

It is noted that the biometric system and a sensing technology of images of Panasonic allow to identify users with a high accuracy even if the person is at an angle, it is partially closed or changed with age.

By the beginning of April, 2019 such development is implemented only in one minimarket of FamilyMart — in Yokohama. About 1000 clients are involved in testing, all of them work at the nearby enterprises Panasonic. In case of successful tests action of the project will be extended to many other shops of the retailer.

Face recognition - only one component of the system of Panasonic installed in FamilyMart supermarket. In the same place the cameras and sensors which are built in in a ceiling for monitoring of the movement of buyers (to reveal most often the visited departments) and control of a remaining balance of goods are used (if necessary to notify personnel on lack of stocks of these or those products).

The Japanese retail networks (especially round-the-clock) suffer labor shortage therefore try to compensate it by automation. Earlier face recognition appeared in Seven-Eleven shops, and the retail network at the house of Lawson is going to install by October, 2019 the systems of self-service in all the 14 thousand sales points.[1]
