The United States launched a mass surveillance system with balloons in cities

Customers: Southern command of the USA (Southcom)

Government and social institutions

Contractors: Sierra Nevada

Project date: 2019/08

In the middle of August, 2019 the American military started the system of mass observation of the cities in six states of the Midwest, using new high-rise aerostats with a set of sensors.

From rural areas of South Dakota military start 25 pilotless aerostats working at solar energy which Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Missouri drifts on distance up to 400 km through states, and then land in the central Illinois. Traveling in a stratosphere at the height up to 20 km, aerostats "provide permanent observation system which should detect and prevent a drug traffic and other threats of internal security". The space corporation Sierra Nevada was engaged in project implementation.

Aerostats bear the hi-tech radars intended for simultaneous tracking of a set of vehicles, both land, and sea, at any time and in any weather. Military obtained the license of the Federal commission of communication of the USA for carrying out tests from the middle of July till September. Last year the similar flights which did not become known were licensed.

Were tested by request of the Southern command of the USA (Southcom) which is responsible for response to natural disasters, prospecting transactions and cooperation in security in the Caribbean Region, Central and South America. For many years the Sierra Nevada company supplied Southcom with light planes with a set of sensors which bore a patrol over Mexico, Colombia, Panama and the Caribbean Sea.

But airplanes require expensive service and presence of crew which can work only several hours a day. New aerostats should become the cheap platform of observation which will be able to monitor round the clock security risks of the USA in restless regions.[1]
